5. The term 'DC motor' is used to refer to any
rotary electrical machine that converts direct
current electrical energy into mechanical
energy.
Introduction to DC Motors
6. Types of DC Motors
The are three types of DC motors:
• DC Series motor
• DC Shunt motor
• DC Compound Motor
8. DC series Motor
A series motor is a direct current motor that has
two windings that are in series, with the same
current flowing through each. Use of series motors
is generally limited to cases where a heavy power
demand is necessary to bring the machine up to
speed, as in the case of certain elevator and hoist
installations.
9. The applications are:
•Cranes
•Air compressor
•Lifts
•Elevators
•Winching system
•Electric traction
•Hair drier
•Vacuum cleaner and in speed regulation application
•power tools
•Sewing machine
•Electric footing

10. DC Shunt Motor
In a DC Shunt motor the field winding is
connected in parallel (shunt) with the armature.
The shunt winding is wound from many turns of
small copper wire and since it is connected
across the DC field supply, its field current will
be constant.
11. The following are some of the properties of a shunt DC
motor:
• This DC motor works at a constant speed once the
voltage supply is adjusted;
• This DC motor is upturned by turning the motor
connections around, similar to a series motor;
• In this type of DC motor, torque may be increased
without sacrificing speed by increasing the motor cur-
rent.

12. The applications are:
•Wiper
•Automatic windscreen
•Drills
•Conveyors
•Fans
•Boring mills
•Shapers
•Blowers
•Spinning and weighing machine
•Centrifugal pumps
