Objective
4. Step 1- Engage (10 minutes)
Sharing lesson objective:
• Post and read aloud from
the lesson objective on the
board, “Students will be able
to describe the effects of
light on various materials.”
5. • Group discussion and responses - recalling prior
knowledge:
• Using a circle-time formation, ask students to
arrange themselves in groups.
• On a KWL chart , ask each group to recall and
respond to these questions:
Knows Wants to
know
Learned
8. Experiment 1:
Reflecting Light
• Gather your materials. This experiment
will use the reflection of light on objects to
show how light moves in a straight line.
students need to conduct this experiment
with other student, as one student will
hold the flashlight and one student will
hold the mirror. They will need the
following supplies:
• Two to three sheets of black paper.
• A flashlight.
• A small mirror.
• Small objects like buttons, bottle caps, or
dimes.
9. Place the objects on the
black paper. Lay the black
paper down on the ground
in a lowly lit room or, if
possible, a dark room.
Then, place two to three
small objects in the center
of the paper.
10. • Have one student hold
the flashlight and one
student hold the
mirror. The student with
the flashlight will sit in front
of the objects with her back
to the objects. The other
student will hold the small
mirror so it is facing the
objects.
11. • Turn on the flashlight. The student will then turn
on the flashlight so it is shining away from the
objects.[The other student will use the small mirror
to reflect the flashlight so it hits the objects. Move
close to the light, at an angle, to catch the light so it
hits the objects.
• This experiment shows that light travels in a
straight line in the air. But it also bounces off of a
reflective surface, like a mirror. The angle of the
light as it bounces off the mirror will be the same as
the angle of the light as it hits the mirror. The mirror
reflects the light and changes its path from a
straight line to an angled straight line.
12. Describe the pathway of light through a
medium.
Hypothesis: Does Light change its way
when pass through different medium?
13. Experiment 2:
Refracting Light
Gather your materials. This experiment will illustrate
that light travels in a straight line in the air but it will
bend when it hits a certain surface, like water and oil.
To conduct this experiment, we will need
• A large glass jar.
• Access to water.
• One cup of oil.
• A ruler.
• A spoon
14. Pour water into the
jar. Fill the jar halfway
with water. Make sure the
jar is large enough to fit
the ruler.
15. • Use a spoon to run the
oil over the surface of the
water. Spoon oil into the
jar so it forms a solid layer
of oil on the surface of the
water.
16. • Place the ruler in the water. Position it
so it is vertical in the water and you can
see the numbers on the side of the ruler.
Note that the numbers appear stretched
or magnified as the light rays bend in the
oil and the water. Move the ruler from side
to side to note the different appearances
of the ruler numbers in the oil and in the
water.
• This will show that light travels at
different speeds in different mediums,
such as air, oil, and water. It will travel in a
straight line in the air, but it will bend
when it changes speed due to contact with
a certain medium, like oil or water.
18. Experiment 3: Dispersion of Light
Shine a flashlight through a glass prism and observe the light being separated
into different colors.- Discuss the concept of dispersion and how white light is
made up of different colors.
19. Explanation:
• After conducting the experiments, ask students to
explain their observations and relate them to the
concepts of reflection, refraction, and dispersion of
light.Discuss the pathway of light and how it travels
through different media.
20. Application
• Ask students to draw and
label a diagram of the
pathway of light through a
medium, such as water or a
prism.
22. Observe students'
participation in the
experiments and their
ability to explain their
observations.
Evaluate students'
diagrams of the pathway
of light through a medium.
23. Extension
Assign students to research and
present on real-world applications
of reflection, refraction, and
dispersion of light, such as lenses
and optical fibers.
