2. If you’re looking for an underrated travel destination with a rich
cultural history, you might want to consider visiting Jhelum.
Jhelum is locally referred to as the ‘City of Soldiers’ or ‘City of
Martyrs.’ It is known for providing a large number of soldiers to
the British Army before the independence and then later to the
Pakistan Armed Forces.
The city’s name is believed to have been derived from the
words ‘Jal,’ which means pure water, and ‘Ham,’ which
translates to snow. ‘Jhelum’ basically refers to the river that
originates in the Himalayas and flows right next to the city.
The history of Jhelum dates back to 5000 years ago. Apart from
being considered a sacred site in ancient India, the city was
also the site of the Battle of the Hydaspes. The historic battle
took place in 326 BC between Macedonian Ruler Alexander the
Great and Indian King Raja Porus.
3. One of the six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Pakistan, Rohtas Fort dates back
to the 16th century. It was constructed by General Sher Shah Suri, the founder of
short-lived Sur Dynasty in the sub-continent. The fort is considered one of the
largest and perhaps the most impenetrable fortresses in South Asia.
4. Qila Rohtas was once considered the biggest military
base of South Asia.
• The construction of the Fort took around seven years to
complete starting from 1541-1548. The thick and dense
walls of Rohtas which are known for its unique
foundational design resemble the art and culture of
Turks, highlights of Mughal and Afghan.
• Shahi mosque near Kabul gate is one of its kinds without
any pillar and minaret.
5. Outside the Langar Khani Gate of Rohtas Fort is the tomb of a unknown person,
legend says that it is the tomb of a lady called Khair Un Nisa, daughter of the
food minister of Sher Shah Suri named Qadir Bukhsh but history is quiet on the
identity of the person who was allowed such a interment in such a glorious
tomb.

9. Tilla Jogian is approximately 25 km west of the cities of Jhelum &
Dina and is the highest peak of the Salt Range, which is known for
its temples, forts and fossilized rocks and trees. This peak is
famous for its ruins of Hindu temples dating back to the time when
Alexander the Great came to this part of the world as the head of a
military expedition. Scenic and beautiful, Tilla Jogian is a pleasant
picnic spot from where one can have a magnificent view of the river
Jhelum and the vast landscape of the Potohar Plateau.
The mound area has three groups of old structures at its top.
Twelve temples, a shrine and a monastery, all in ruins, stand out
among them. A central water tank and a well built in the Central
Asian style from the Mughal period also adorn the historic site.
According to tradition, the legendary romantic hero, Ranjha, joined
the fraternity of jogis at this very place after his heart was broken
because Heer was forcibly married off to someone else.
