Bill Meyer (Virtual Science Center): Turning Kids on to STEM by Letting Them Discover How VR and AR Tricks Our Brain
How exactly does Virtual and Augmented Reality game human perception so things we know aren’t there seem to exist? Can simple and robust public learning experiences empower and delight people of all ages to experiment and discover the answers for themselves? The answer is yes. This talk will present examples and discuss how UX best practices can be applied to create effective inquiry-based learning experiences that unpack seemingly complex modern technologies. Through iterative design coupled with repeated visitor testing, we deconstructed the surprising perceptual science and technology behind VR and AR into 16 cool hands-on experiences that spark “aha” moments and minimize the need for wordy explanations. We keep concepts intuitive, playful, and fun to understand. Our traveling exhibition goal is to show visitors they're smarter than they suspect, inspire students to aim for STEM careers, and help teachers lead deeper NGSS and Common Core dives both in and out of the classroom. This 45 second video shows an example exhibit and part of our visitor testing process: https://youtu.be/Sgh0Sys57lY Without needing to learn the terms, visitors discover the secrets of how things like Motion Parallax, Stereo Vision, 3D Audio Spatialization, Outside-In, and Inside-Out Tracking work in concert to make virtual, augmented and mixed reality experiences possible.

As the speed of technology continues to accelerate automation in the manufacturing world, the inevitable question of whether or not the “human touch” will become obsolete is top of mind for workers. The fear that robots and smart technologies will take everyone's jobs is prevalent, but not necessarily true. AR has the power to be a job creator, not a job eliminator. Its ability to make anyone an instant expert can in fact increase job security by quickly helping workers become more proficient in tasks. Learn about real-world use cases where AR is making people better, and safer, at their jobs, and explore why enterprises who create a workplace that’s augmented, not automated, will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Valentin Heun (PTC): One Reality - A 3rd generation AR User Interface
Many of our technological innovations seem to expand the computational abilities without the human in the loop. Augmented Reality is one of the view technologies that promises technological advances that enable us humans a better connection with the ubiquitous technology around us. We are not there yet to make use of such a user interface. We currently have individual islands of interactivity via AR. This conference may have many spatial demos as well, however, a single ubiquitous layer that penetrates all screens, surfaces, machines, and environments are not available. This is what the PTC Reality Lab researches. The core of this research is the ability to use AR in a scalable distributed platform to bridge among technological domains to allow the weaving of multiple technologies into one user experience. The resulting user experience is called One Reality. The goal for One Reality is to provide one seamless, ubiquitous flow of user experience for all technologies that touch the user’s decision making. This talk will iterate on the different stages of Augmented Reality User Interfaces and identifies One Reality as the 3rd stage in the evolution of AR user interfaces. This visionary talk aims to inspire the audience to think beyond the known applications for Augmented Reality.

Scott Montgomerie (Scope AR): AR’s Influence on the Workforce of Tomorrow: Job Eliminator or Creator?

This visionary talk aims to inspire the audience to think beyond the known applications for Augmented Reality.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Augmented- & Virtual Reality
An example of a practical implementation:
Working in an innovative field or with new technology you are faced with new and great ideas – a lot of posibilities...
From the idea it starts..
This will be he next big thing!
Fire burns - all involved are getting enthusiastic about the possibilities...
...but at the end you have to deal with the real results. And to be happy that there is still a light?
what is this talk about:
Not just showing usecases –or yet another VR/AR experience / demonstrator / Pilot
There is a Talk of my colleague Mirko and I am thankfull to listen to Jürgens talk before which is much more specific to the process aspects of a succesfull implementation
This Talk is about our findings to handle innovation in the field af AR&VR within our company from an personal view
think beyond your existing solutions
feel responsible to generate new!
What are your drivers to implement innovative solutions?
Next slides emphasize different aspects of the innovation path – from first setup to an implemented solution
The following 15 points are my key points on the way from the birth of a new idea / tech solution to implementation into an enterprise infrastructure with its traditional long term existing processes.
A common understanding and agreement is necessary to define a clear strategy and goal, keeping the complete ecosystem in mind, derive the focus points and develop solution bricks to keep it alive.
establish your network
Stay connected to the relevant players
Establish partnerships (yes also long term could be relevant)
try to find your information pipelines / channels!!!
Whats happening outside!
Spend time with your colleagues > listen!
Understand the business needs
Cluster the business needs
Reduce complexity (it is not necessary to have every detail with you) to put it in place (if the big picture is part of your job)
> I am not the expert
Why should you do this:
You need criteria to sort things out > this is the most difficult part of it and they are always changing
sort it out ! >now you also know what to keep and why!
All theses activities are based on a common goal – there are all part of a big picture – your landscape of activities
You have to create this picture / landscape as a base for further steps
Define implementation strategy
Address your target group
Communicate clearly the challenges with your potential partner
Define the short term story > you need to convince and start NOW!
Tell your story and let others be part of it through an experience
Do not stay on an abstract level or present slide vision
Why you should do this – next slide
approve your assumptions > yes by now we are talking about your assumptions
be attentively– collect the feedback
check against vision
rescope if neccessary
concretize your visions (find the right entry point for the next steps)
transfer your vision into action (steps)
define implementation path > you need the full overview after feedback
check against business needs
will it be a part of the big picture (basic brick)
check the long term potential (is it sustainable) > define the next action is relevant to proceed, but not to find out the relevance for the whole story
start search for long term partner
if you find gaps by now – priorize them (is just a matter of time or do we need actions immediately > develop concepts / have a solution strategy otherwise you are not able to convince and it will be easy to slow down your efforts or kick off the whole project
Tell about basic bricks: each topic is part of the picture
It is not one project overall > find the basics needed – take care about that and put them toegther at a defined time
Stay connected to the relevant players > but now it is more precise – your stakeholders internally play the important role for the next acion to take place
Understand their needs and actions
try to find the hidden obstacles
Connect with supporters
Plan enough time for this step!
They will push you through the process or they make it a pain
separate clearly between dependencies
technological: hardware / software
internal processes / methods
external dependencies
Regulations
make it transparent and transferable
distribute responsibilities accordingly to their influence
helps you to define what part to reach when
helps you to communicate internally and externally about your milestones
breakdown into doable steps and try to reduce dependencies
(if you could start a technical evaluation you do not need to wait for the partner to implement the story)
What happens when!
if it is interesting, but it is interesting only…
if it is does not have the potential covering the full story…
if it is not an integrative part of the ecosystem..
if it only counts for a limited area
in short: if it does not have the impact you expect: let it be!
do the PoC for the short term action (this allows to check against above)
tell the (success) story with your initial partner (this is the short term entry point from step 5
Your partner convince the rest of the world!
let the others know why you did it and share your bigger vision
get the relevant departments on board – invite them, convince them activate them (it is your part to do this marketing job – use the best available channel to do it (workshop/meeting/external presentation/…)
don’t forget to check the needs against the broadened range and reshape if necessary
share your needs
activate your partner
do not think you are the sole genius in the world and it is your secret idea
with the right partner you speed up your innovation and make it useful for your purpose
Dont forget: you already did the first steps and have proove the concept.
I often hear it is faster to develop it in small groups far away to avoid discussions (!) and slow downs even at a point where it has to be challenged and integrated
It ist faster to develop a „solution“ no one later accepts as a solutiont?
> think outside your box! Let others think and create too!
think in terms of a “standard” you have to integrate, but you are the onliest adaptor of the standard – how much impact would such a standard have?
Input from outside would also help to improve your solution
>IT is a part of your implementation path!
in terms of ecosystem the solution must be based on a broad base and deliver the impact told before
if there is still a gap – now you need to close it or have a strategy
if you could separate it > it must be part of the continuous optimization and integration process
keep an eye on moving targets (because now we are talking about many shareholders internally and externally) - always be clear in the decision process and communicate actively
Now you deal with a lot of things:
Include workers council
It Security > concepts
Ergonomics and hygenical aspects
Legal aspects
you must help them understand they are not experts in your field! > you already did it during the process!!!
It is your part to support the involved parties and deliver a decision base
– the idea was easy-wasn‘t it?
if there is a reason to change or redefine – do not wait, take action and do it!
Make the reason transparent and stay credible
it is not about find a culprit
Think about the goal of the whole activity: is to improve the business and this should be in the interest of all involved parties
So there is no need to be frustrated > it is a part of lessons learned
It is allways easy to look back and know it better
fail fast
fail forward
> open communication and living a culture where failures are seen as a chance to improve should be a mandatory base for companies doing innovation
there is no endpoint!
hand over the functional basis in a way other could continue to enhance and established processes for services and so on could be started
take care that you are not losing on the last mile > yes it is difficult: the hype is over and there are so many other things to take care
and of course: the next big thing waits to be done!
There are so many initiatives / methods / best practices out there
There are a lot of helping instruments/methods and processes – define your way and keep in mind: you always have to redefine it or adjust it – there will be always other parameters and conditions you have to deal with.
It is up to the acting people ! and you have to define, shape and drive it.
Transformation is a part of the company I am working for
Change in mindset and culture must be established through the whole company – it is not a top down decision and it needs time.
Audi does a lot of different activities to push the transformation also in an transformation of the company culture…
Hint: not to claim innovation management and methods for the company > doing it in our area and be part of the big picture!
CoC with its core business claims!
Inhouse consultancy
Weighting topics
Basic bricks to establish further innovation
Starting with a few examples and give hints, advise and support other doing their jobs better …and get also a good feeling in doing the job a new way.
> we try to be as pragmatic as possible, but also force to be precise where needed
Our main business field – as mentioned just a part of the bigger picture
My position regarding these technologies:
We are information dealer: deliver the right information in the right time in the right context!
The different layers of the CoC
CoC an open house
Our common understanding
Bringing the right people to the right topics or the right technology to the right partner …connect and create!
We are acting as an inhouse consultancy agency
Enable innovation!
I do not have to be the innovator!
