MEANING,CHARACTERISTICS
Presented by;


 The word ‘changes’ denotes a difference in anything
observed over some period of time. Social change,
therefore, would mean observable differences in any
social phenomena over any period of time.
 A Look into the history of society reveals that all social
institutions such as family ,religion, marriage, political,
economic, social values and social attitudes have
undergone a drastic change over a period of time.
 Human society is in an ever- changing process, growing,
decaying, renewing, and adjusting itself to new found
ideas, inventions and ways of living.
INTRODUCTION

 Social change may be defined as the alteration or
transformation at large scale level in the social structure,
social institutions, social organisation and patterns of social
behaviour in a society
 Change is the law of nature .What is today shall be different
from what it would be tomorrow.
 Social change is a change in society and society is a web of
social relationships. Social relationship are social processes,
social patterns, social interactions. These include the mutual
activities and relations of the various parts of society.
 Can be explained using growth, progress, evolution,
revolution, adaption and accommodation
MEANING OF SOCIAL CHANGE

 K Davis : Social change means only such alternation, that
occurs in the society, that is the structure and functions of
the society
 Jones: Social change is a term used to describe variation in
or modification of any aspect of social process, social
pattern, social interaction or social organisation
 According to Maclver and page : Social change is a
change in social relationship. It is a process responsive to
many types, to changes in man-made conditions of living,
to changes in attitudes and beliefs of men and to changes
that go beyond human control to the biological and
physical nature of things
DEFINITIONS OF SOCIAL
CHANGE

 Social change is universal phenomenon
 Social change is community change
 Speed of social change is not uniform
 Nature and speed of social change is affected by and
related to time factor
 Social change occurs as an essential law
 Define prediction of social change is not possible
 Social change is continuous
 Social change is temporal
CHARACTERISTICS

 Social change is environmental
 Social change is human change
 Social change may be planned or unplanned
 Social change may create chain reaction.

 No human society is static and at the same time it is
difficult to predict the forms and directions of social
change. The reason is that the factors which cause
social change do not remain uniform always.
 The population changes , expansion of science and
technology, ideologies and social values take on new
forms and as a result of that social structure, social
system and social institutions change their
functioning
