Eating disorders involve serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, stress/emotional eating, pica, and rumination disorder. Anorexia nervosa involves inadequate food intake leading to weight that is too low, an intense fear of weight gain, and obsession with weight and food. Bulimia nervosa involves frequent episodes of binge eating large amounts of food followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain like self-induced vomiting. Binge eating disorder similarly involves frequent episodes of consuming large amounts of food but without compensatory behaviors.
