4. BUNRAKU (NINGYO
JORURI)
o Japanese puppet theater
o A type of wood-carved puppet originally
made to stand out through torch
illumination.
o Uses 3 puppeteers to operate a puppet
about 1/3 to ½ of their body size
o Date back to Japan in the 16th Century
Bunraku puppeteers are dressed in black to give a shadow affect.

o Meaning “Little Mary” in French
due to the first marionette being of
Virgin Mary
o Puppeteers are called
manipulators

o Were flat and usually made
of leather
o Joined together with wire
