2 Introduction
Historically, Spread Spectrum Technology began life predominantly as a proprietary technology
with limited functionality. The data speed over the radio interface was also low (2Mbps and below)
and hence the clients were limited to a small selection of character based devices communicating
at low throughput speeds via a TELNET connection to a host. Restrictions in the transmitted radio
power also reduced devices to the use of a single ‘low gain’ omni-directional antenna. The scope
of a Site Survey was hence relatively small.
Wireless Technology is currently expanding at a terrific rate with the introduction of the IEEE
802.11 standard. Advances have also been made in other areas. Currently 802.11g devices are
able to offer speeds of up to 54Mbps over the radio thus increasing the type and quantity of
available clients exponentially. Coupled with this, the transmitted power of the device has reduced
such that a broad selection of antennas can now be adopted. Finally, products have been
enhanced to enable Site Surveys to be conducted in almost any environment (Cold Stores,
Intrinsically Safe Zoned areas, offices, shipyards, airports etc).
DW WiFi has recognised the requirement to tailor our Site Survey Process to cater for these new
advances. Senior engineers are employed with years of experience using the various radio
technologies available. To assist us in providing a survey that meets your requirements we ask that
you complete this questionnaire.

3 Purpose & Scope
The remainder of this document aims to compile sufficient information to carry out a Professional
Radio Site Survey of your site(s).
Section 3 Site Details Specifics of your site or sites including designated members of staff who
must be present at the time of the survey.
Section 4 Access Requirements Details are required as to the rules and regulations of your site.
For example please state if PPE is required and whether this is provided by the site.
Section 5 Survey Requirements Details the wireless project requirements (type of access point,
required link speed, areas requiring coverage etc).
Section 6 Site conditions It is important that the survey engineer is made aware of any conditions
specific to your site that may impact on either the survey or the functionality of the proposed
wireless LAN.
Section 7 Customer Signoff Please complete this section prior to returning via FAX, POST or E-
MAIL to DW-WiFi. An accurate quotation can then be provided together with some proposed dates
for the Site Survey

6 Survey Requirements
6.1 Access Point Selection
Please note that all CISCO access points support the following radio standard and supports
both 802.11b and 802.11g clients.
2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11g Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Radio
Please be aware that in a ‘mixed cell’ environment (i.e. both 802.11b and 802.11g clients
operating in the same coverage cell) the performance of the 802.11g clients will potentially
be restricted to 802.11b speeds.
Please select the required access point from the following list by placing a tick in the
appropriate box. Please leave this section blank if you are undecided and require DW WiFi to
advice you of the most appropriate choice on the day of the survey.

6.2 Proposed Client Devices
It is important that DW WiFi are made aware of any clients that have been proposed for the
wireless project.
Please place a tick against any of the devices that have been proposed for your wireless
project and indicate the proposed quantity of each.

6.3 Type of Connection
It is important that DW WiFi is made aware of any clients that have been proposed for the
wireless project. The type and functionality of the client devices will often dictate the
minimum link speed required from the wireless LAN. For example a low link speed (1Mbps)
is sufficient if the wireless LAN supports ONLY client devices running terminal emulation. If
the wireless LAN is required to also support 802.11b/g PC clients requiring high bandwidth
then a much higher link speed is required.
Please tick the appropriate options for your wireless project. Please tick ‘Not Known’ if the
devices have yet to be decided.

6.4 Minimum Link Speed
It is possible to select the required minimum link speed at which your radio clients will
connect to the wireless LAN. Please be aware that it may not be possible to always achieve
the maximum speed of 54Mbps. There are many environmental factors that affect the link
speed. The survey engineer will advise you of any issues encountered on the day of the
survey and the likelihood of this affecting the link speed.
Please select the required link speed. Please note that this is the ‘minimum’ link speed
available in the areas of coverage. As the radio signal to a client device improves (typically
with proximity to an access point) the link speed is likely to increase above the minimum.
Please take into account the type of devices selected for your project (previous section)
when making your decision.
Please tick the appropriate options for your wireless project. Please tick ‘Not Known’ if the
required minimum link speed is yet to be decided.

It is possible to provide higher link speeds in designated areas of the site (eg 2Mbps and
above link speed in warehouse to support terminal emulation clients and 54Mbps link speed
in open plan office areas). If this is the case please identify your requirements below.
Please be aware that the link speed is dependent on a number of environmental factors and
hence some of the higher link speeds may not be achievable.

7 Site Conditions
7.1 Ethernet Network
Each access point requires connectivity to an Ethernet network and as such Ethernet cabling
(min CAT5) needs to be routed to all access point locations nominated as part of the survey
process. Please answer the following questions specific to your wired network.
Please note that DW WiFi does not offer Ethernet cabling as a service. It is our experience
that customers often either use ‘in-house’ resources to install Ethernet cabling or more
commonly have a preferred cabling contractor. Please indicate below if you do not have a
preferred contractor and require DW WiFi to recommend a company to install the Ethernet
cabling.
YES/NO
please
specify
Do you have an Ethernet network?
Are network HUBS used (as oppose to network switches)?
Is it possible to route Ethernet cabling to all radio coverage areas?
7.2 Existing Wireless Networks
The engineer will also need to be aware of any existing activity on the radio frequencies
utilised by the wireless access points. All 802.11b and 802.11g access points operate within
the ISM band (an unlicensed set of frequencies in the range 2.40 - 2.4835 GHz). Please can
you identify ALL known wireless networks that are operational on your site. Where known,
please can include the location, the manufacturers’ name, the ESS-ID and the radio channel.

7.3 Radio Interference
Finally, please can you ascertain whether there are any other forms of equipment on site
operating with the frequency range (2.40-2.4835 GHz). This is potentially a source of
interference to the wireless access points.

7.4 Coverage Area Details
The survey engineer will require a site plan on the day of the survey. We request that several
copies be made available (preferably no larger than A3 in size). We ask that the areas
requiring radio coverage to be marked onto the plan (either shaded or outlined).
Please can you answer the following questions specific to the required coverage areas and
their environmental conditions:
Item Please Indicate
Make available during survey “Site Plan of all coverage areas”
(max A3 size)
Confirm that coverage areas will be fully accessible during
survey
Confirm general lay out and content is typical ( no planned
layout changes)
How many buildings are required to be covered
Are there multiple floors / mezzanine levels required to be
covered
Are the areas to be covered in separate buildings
Approximate size of areas to be covered (number of football
pitches)
Are there any Cold Store / Chiller areas requiring coverage
At what temperatures do the Cold Stores / Chillers operate at
Are any areas subject to excessive Moisture or Dust
Are there any External areas requiring coverage
Approximate size of areas to be covered (number of football
pitches)
Are there any Intrinsically safe areas requiring coverage
Do you require a resilient (redundant) solution
7.5 Further Information
Please detail any other information you may feel is pertinent to the wireless survey.
