MOTIVATION
In today’s busy schedule, people usually
tend to miss out on important tasks.
Reminder helps the user to keep track of
tasks.
The tasks can be broadly classified into
two categories:
(1) Time based tasks
(2) Place based tasks
5. .Time based tasks:
These are those tasks which need to be carried
out at a specific time.
For e.g. Taking medicine at 8 a.m. every day.
To remind ourselves of this kind of tasks, we can
set an alarm with a reminder at the specific time.
Location based tasks:
These are those tasks which need to be
performed at a specific location.
For e.g. You have to buy grocery at the convenient
store nearest to your home while returning from
the workplace.
6. .
In such case, setting an alarm triggered by time
may not be appropriate if you are not sure
when you will be passing by the convenient
store. This motivates us to use a place
reminder.
That is, in the above scenario, we would like
the alarm to beep and show a reminder when
we are getting close to the convenient store.
7. INTRODUCTION
Scheduling and managing tasks has become an
essential thing in today’s life.
Usually, reminders available in mobile phones are
triggered by date and time.
But, in many situations, tasks need to be performed
based on the location.
Place Reminder (or Location Based Task Reminder)
gives alert when the user enters into the specified
geographical region.
It allows the user to create reminders based on the
location.
This application works on smart phones and tablets
and tracks user’s current location with the help of
GPS.
8. REAL WORLD SITUATIONS
1. Some people tend to forget things when they
go to office or school.
2. A person went to office and thought of doing
some work at home when he returns to home.
3. Person may like to purchase a birthday gift the
next time when he is at gift shop.
4. A person went to the grocery store from home
and forgot to bring a list of items which he had
written on a piece of paper.
5. When people go on holiday, they forget to visit
place(s).
9. It is desired that there should be a
reminder system or application to
automatically remind people the tasks they
might have forgotten.
Place Reminder resolves all such situations
by giving beep/message whenever user
reaches the location. GPS is the key
concept in Place Reminder.
10. GPS
The Global Positioning System
(GPS) is a space-based satellite
navigation system that provides
location and time information in
all weather conditions, anywhere
on or near the earth.
11. PLACE REMINDER AS A LBS
Location-based services or LBS refer to
applications which use the geographical position
of a mobile device in order to provide services.
In it, a positioning component is usually needed
to determine the location of user's mobile device.
Most of the current LBS services do not require
users to input location manually.
It rather uses internet connection and GPS
provided by the smart phone manufacturer
services to learn about the user’s current location.
12. The examples of location based services are:
Maps Navigation
Nearest Friends notification reminder
Marketing /Advertising
Place Reminder
Discovering nearest ATM or the nearest
filling station.
13. WORKING
Necessary infrastructure elements:
Mobile devices - tools to access LBS
services, to send requests and retrieve
results. e.g. laptops, mobile phones, etc.
Applications - the interface for users to
access the LBS service.
Communication Network - the mobile
network which transfers service request
from user to service provider, and
requested information back to the user.
14. Positioning component - to determine the
location of user's mobile device.
Service servers - these process service
requests and send back request results.
Servers calculate positions, search for a
route, or search specific information based
on user's position.
15. There are two major phases-
• Obtaining the current location of the
user.
• Utilize the obtained information to
provide the user a specific service.
16.
17. The process of a LBS service:
STEP 1- The user sends a service request using
the application running on mobile device .
STEP 2- The service request, with user's current
location obtained from the positioning
component(here , GPS data) is sent to service
server via the mobile communication network.
STEP 3,4- The service server requests geographic
database and other related database to get
required information.
STEP 5- The requested information is sent to user
via mobile communication network.
18. ADVANTAGES
1. User friendly and flexible to use.
2. Compact in design.
3. Alert with music or with digital voice.
4. Vibrate when mobile is in silent mode.
5. Allows the user to set multiple tasks in
the same location.
19. CONCLUSION
We travel to so many locations that we
generally forget which location we are exiting
and the important work we have to do on that
specified location.
Place Reminder helps us to remember all
those activities.
It allows the user to set reminder on specific
location by which he/she can easily add the
task to be performed on that location. It is a
very useful application through which the
user can perform their daily work efficiently
and effectively.
