TOPIC
MOTIVATION
CONCEPT OF MOTIVATION
 Motivation is that ability or quality within an individual
which inspires him to learn or practice an activity again and
again until the level of proficiency is being attained.
 If players are not motivated, they will not perform the
activity again and again but leave them aside if they cannot
practice or perform them well once.
 Before discussing the need to motivate someone, it is first
very necessary to discuss the concept of motive.
 “An energetic force within an individual which inspires him
to act in a particular manner through which he can satisfy
his needs is known as motive”.
Why is the needto motivate the players?
 There are biological and socio-psychological reasons for motivating
someone.
 Very basis of one’s behaviour is being formed by requirements, which
are in reality general wants or desires.
 There are some kinds of needs which made it necessary to motivate
the people, some of these needs are as follows :-
a) Psychological reasons
b) Feeling of Belongingness with rest of the individuals
c) Security in terms of society and personal
d) Feeling of love
e) Self - actualization
definition
 “Motivation is a arousal of a tendency to act and to
produce various kinds of effects”.
 ATKINSON
 “Any condition which can energize and direct one’s action
is known as motivation”.
 CROOKS and STEIN
 “A state within a living organism that derives his
behaviour towards some pre-determined objectives is
known as motivation”.
 MORGAN and KING
DIFFERENT KINDS OF MOTIVATIONS
 Thus, motivation is a force which stimulates a person’s
interest in learning some particular kind of activity. This
can be internal as well as external in nature.
 INTRINSIC :- The forces which exists within an individual
and perform the function of motivation are known as
intrinsic.
 EXTRINSIC :- The forces existing outside or externally and
perform the function of motivation are being known as
extrinsic.
 Intrinsic forces are often called the natural sources of
motivation while extrinsic forces are called the artificial
sources of motivation.
HOW TO MOTIVATE THE PLAYERS
There are various means through which players can be motivated, some
of which are as follows :-
 No individual is same in respect of their knowledge and capabilities.
 Motivating the students or players is not an easy task only that
physical educator can motivate his players who himself have taken
part in the competition and have thorough knowledge relating to
various difficulties which are being faced by a player in participating
in the competitions of various kinds.
 Players can not be motivated in an atmosphere of boundations. One
should be provided with freedom to act without any kind of
boundations, however, this freedom should not be unlimited.
 An important means to motivate the players to perform efficiently is
to make use of different activities during the training period.
 By providing scholarships to the students which perform well is another
important mean with the help of which players can be motivated.
 One of an important method to motivate a player is to give him an
opportunity to make his self-analysis. He should be provided adequate
means and help to analyze his own potential and weakness.
 Motivational level of players get effected to a lot of extent by
appropriate feedback. Players who receive the feedback from the
teachers perform the functions efficiently.
 To analyze the level of knowledge of students, various kinds of
competitions should be held from time to time in the school or the
institution.
 Physical educator should classify the players on the basis of their
performance level into different categories.
