Director-in-Charge and
Dean (Faculty)
Dear Recruiter,
It is a matter of immense pride for me to introduce the Armed Forces
Programme (AFP), which is a six-month residential course in Business
Management at IIM Ahmedabad. The programme is special to us for the
fact that they are the ones who had made immense contribution to the
nation at the peak of their lives and absorbed extraordinary strategic and
collegial attributes which can be an asset to the corporate ethos. The batch
is a mix of 60 Armed Forces officers from diverse fields of the Army, Navy
and Air Force with experience ranging from 10 to 35 years. Unlike similar
courses run by other institutes, participants of the AFP batch at IIM
Ahmedabad have been selected through an entrance examination
conducted by the institute. The popularity of the programme is evident
from the fact that there has been a persistent increase in the number of
applicants for the course over the years.
The 24 week programme has been designed to hone the participants’ skills
by putting together a relevant and up to date content in tune with the true
IIM Ahmedabad flavour. The participants have been exposed to all the core
areas of Management and current best practices in industry. Each module
has evolved over the last decade building on the teaching experience
conjoined with course and industry feedback.
Our faculty utilises diverse pedagogy, such as the time-tested case study
method, industry visits, practical exercises, video case studies and class
room instructions, to expose the batch to both theoretical and practical
aspects of various subjects. The tools and techniques used for instructions
are designed to provide an enriching learning experience and the
foundation for continued learning. This provides a holistic development
and grooming of the participants.
The industry feedback of previous AFP batches has been excellent and a
large number of them have been able to make invaluable contributions in
fields across the corporate world. I am confident that, as recruiters, you have
a reservoir of trained managers and leaders laced with talent as well as
experience from which you can take a pick.

It was a pleasure teaching the current batch of AFP. I was impressed by their
enthusiasm and keenness to learn the subject. They put in their best efforts
to compensate for their wide disparities in age, experience and
qualifications. Most participants in the AFP have handled budgets during
their careers in the armed forces, with some of them having experience in
large procurement projects. The participants were found to be very
receptive towards understanding and assimilating the subject. The course
clearly targeted and bridged the knowledge gaps which some of the
participants had. I am certain that the skills gained by them during their
years in uniform, coupled with their learning from this institute will stand
them in good stead.
PARVINDER GUPTA
Chairperson
Armed Forces Programme
Appropriate to the current dynamic business environment, the participants
of Armed Forces Programme (AFP) represent a group of professionals who
embrace change, as they leave the comforts of careers in the Armed Forces
to take on challenges of the corporate world. Indian Institute of
Management Ahmedabad partners in this change process by arming the 60
selected AFP participants, with the knowledge and skills required to fight a
corporate battle, through this intense 6 months residential programme.
The true value of these participants lay in their immense experience in the
Armed Forces that has developed in them the attributes much needed in
organisations which are designed to deliver results. The programme design,
which has evolved over the last 12 years, facilitates merging their invaluable
experience into corporate competence by including various important tools
of management with an emphasis on incorporating the latest development.
The curriculum builds on the expertise of the participants in Operations,
Supply Chain Management, Human Resource Management,
Communications, Strategy, Infrastructure Management, Project
Management and Organisation Behaviour. The curriculum also lays
emphasis on key areas such as Marketing, Finance, Business Law, Statistics,
Economics, Entrepreneurship, Food and Agriculture Business, Financial
Decision Making, Healthcare Management, Managerial Computing and
Information Systems to enable the participants in a seamlessly transition
into business setup.
With various learning methods and in particular the pedagogy of case study
method at IIM Ahmedabad, the participants have been exposed to real-life
business situations with over 100 case studies covering a wide variety of
industries and disciplines of management within 24 weeks. Being a
residential course, the participants are also exposed to a stimulating
academic environment for professional learning with a host of facilities, a
well-stocked library, industry interaction, lectures by speakers from around
the world and student activities.
The sincerity and levels of enthusiasm towards learning of this batch has
been amazing. They seem to be ready to infuse similar synergy,
professionalism and passion to your organisations and steer it towards
achieving its goals and missions. I am certain that the corporates seeking
prospective leaders will be pleasantly surprised by the calibre of this
wonderful batch.

I am acutely aware that Operations, Planning and
Execution are forte of Officers of the Armed Forces and
the same was very evident in my interaction with them
during the course. The adaptability of these Officers in
handling the complex and challenging situations on and
off the field makes them ideally suited for managing
most of the business operations with ease. During the
course, I was therefore only attempting to channelize
this tacit knowhow into formal frameworks and leverage
their knowledge of operations in terms of applicability
to the corporate world. Their conventional strengths in
managing teams, logical ability and conclusive
deductions supported the learning process while
covering the subject.
With their experience of “getting things done” and
knowledge base augmented during the programme, I
am sure that these Officers would be appreciable assets
for the organizations in the field of Operations,
Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Project
Management.

Management Information Systems and Managerial Computing
It is a different experience to teach the participants of AFP.
Today, they are at the crossroads of starting their careers
afresh in the corporate industry. However, in all aspects, I find
them comparable to the students of any other programme.
Some of them are knowledgeable about the most complex
technologies. It was thus not difficult for most participants to
absorb and imbibe the various applications of computers
used in the corporate world.
My endeavour has always been to enhance their inherent
skills related to the analysis, design, and implementation of
information systems to the business context. Understanding
of emerging trends in information technology and e-
commerce will give them an advantage in their new
organisations, work-fields, and ventures. Their challenging
questions during the classroom sessions displayed their
insights into technology management. I am sure that the
knowledge and applications taught during the course will
provide them with the necessary skills and springboard them
into success in the corporate world.

Armed Forces are not normally associated with marketing
except for grand parades, public relations, exhibitions,
conferences and flag marches. I was therefore, certainly
delighted with the level of participation and keenness to
learn displayed by the AFP participants in the class. I also
found the participants intuitive while dealing with the various
cases studies and coming up with innovative solutions to
corporate problem situations.
The highly technical background of many of these
participants make them ideally suited for Business to
Business marketing teams. With fast expansion of defence
sector industries in India, there is also large scope for these
veterans in partnering with these firms in field of marketing.
I am certain that the knowledge, both theoretical and
practical, gained in the course will arm these participants with
the right skill for corporate success.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management
In my interactions with the current AFP batch I found them to
be highly proficient in multiple dimensions - in terms of their
qualifications, background experience, skill sets, knowledge
and competencies. It is personally gratifying to be a part of
their aspirational journey into the business and management
world.
During the course, "Logistics and Supply Chain
Management", I found that many participants bring their
unique and rich experience backed with requisite theoretical
knowledge gained during their careers in the Armed Forces.
The course structure on the subject was therefore abridged
this year. The class discussions have been highly involved and
engaging. I particularly appreciate the fact that the
participants are happy to be intellectually challenged. It is
encouraging to help them with insightful case analysis in the
context of diverse situations that are typical of business
environment. I see our AFP participants as potential
corporate heads and leaders of the business world, who are
keen to make a positive impact in their chosen domain and
the society. I wish them the very best for their future.
5
The marketing course structure has been designed to ensure
that the participants are well prepared for their second
innings in corporates from the viewpoint of a good
understanding of the conceptual and implementation
aspects of marketing. The diverse background, varied fields
of expertise and the fact that the participants have operated
across the country was especially useful while covering the
topic ‘distribution channels’.
I found the class participative and engaged with the ability to
think outside the box. The participants were eager to learn,
articulate, proactive and always well prepared for the class.
Over the years, the quality of participants has continuously
improved consequent to the institution of selection
procedure for the course. And this is certainly reflecting in the
calibre of the persons on the batch.
I am certain that AFP 2017-18 will contribute effectively and
shine in their future organisations. I commend them to you
for potential employment opportunities.

EXPERIENCE
ENRICHED FOR EXCELLENCE
Counted among the top five armed forces in the world, Indian Armed Forces are known for their
professionalism, achievements, ethos, size and technology. Selection of officers into the armed
forces itself is a stringent screening process which includes academic and psychological testing with
lakhs of applicants staking their claim on few hundred vacancies. The Armed Forces Programme
(AFP) at IIM Ahmedabad is unique, as it is the only resettlement course in the Armed Forces which
undertakes further selection of participants through a separate selection procedure.
The Officers retiring from Indian Armed Forces represent a group of motivated personnel who have
been put through rigorous training to develop ethos of leadership, devotion, discipline and
teamwork. These Officers have worked with diverse groups of people and in equally diverse and
challenging circumstances thus imbibing the art of being flexible, adaptable and focused at the same
time. From early stages of their respective careers, these Officers have shouldered responsibility and
delivered results through a positive attitude, good communication skills and cross functional
knowledge.
The group, undergoing this programme, has Officers with diverse background, skills, educational
qualifications and fields of service. The work experience of the participants of the course range from
7 to 30 years with an average of approximately 20 years.
AFP is a six-month, full time residential Business Management Course, conducted at IIM Ahmedabad
from October to March every year. The curriculum of the AFP course includes 30 specifically selected
and designed modules with an aim to impart contemporary global management practices through
pedagogy of case-study method, class room discussions, business presentations and industry visits.
The stringent course curriculum brings to fore the analytical & managerial skills that are a pre-
requisite for success in corporate career. The course ensures that each participant’s ‘experience is
enriched for continued excellence’ and that he or she is reoriented for the corporate world.

  • 5. ERROL D’SOUZA Director-in-Charge and Dean (Faculty) Dear Recruiter, It is a matter of immense pride for me to introduce the Armed Forces Programme (AFP), which is a six-month residential course in Business Management at IIM Ahmedabad. The programme is special to us for the fact that they are the ones who had made immense contribution to the nation at the peak of their lives and absorbed extraordinary strategic and collegial attributes which can be an asset to the corporate ethos. The batch is a mix of 60 Armed Forces officers from diverse fields of the Army, Navy and Air Force with experience ranging from 10 to 35 years. Unlike similar courses run by other institutes, participants of the AFP batch at IIM Ahmedabad have been selected through an entrance examination conducted by the institute. The popularity of the programme is evident from the fact that there has been a persistent increase in the number of applicants for the course over the years. The 24 week programme has been designed to hone the participants’ skills by putting together a relevant and up to date content in tune with the true IIM Ahmedabad flavour. The participants have been exposed to all the core areas of Management and current best practices in industry. Each module has evolved over the last decade building on the teaching experience conjoined with course and industry feedback. Our faculty utilises diverse pedagogy, such as the time-tested case study method, industry visits, practical exercises, video case studies and class room instructions, to expose the batch to both theoretical and practical aspects of various subjects. The tools and techniques used for instructions are designed to provide an enriching learning experience and the foundation for continued learning. This provides a holistic development and grooming of the participants. The industry feedback of previous AFP batches has been excellent and a large number of them have been able to make invaluable contributions in fields across the corporate world. I am confident that, as recruiters, you have a reservoir of trained managers and leaders laced with talent as well as experience from which you can take a pick. MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR-IN-CHARGE 06
  • 6. SHAILESH GANDHI Dean (Programmes) MESSAGE FROM DEAN (PROGRAMMES) 07 It was a pleasure teaching the current batch of AFP. I was impressed by their enthusiasm and keenness to learn the subject. They put in their best efforts to compensate for their wide disparities in age, experience and qualifications. Most participants in the AFP have handled budgets during their careers in the armed forces, with some of them having experience in large procurement projects. The participants were found to be very receptive towards understanding and assimilating the subject. The course clearly targeted and bridged the knowledge gaps which some of the participants had. I am certain that the skills gained by them during their years in uniform, coupled with their learning from this institute will stand them in good stead.
  • 7. PARVINDER GUPTA Chairperson Armed Forces Programme Appropriate to the current dynamic business environment, the participants of Armed Forces Programme (AFP) represent a group of professionals who embrace change, as they leave the comforts of careers in the Armed Forces to take on challenges of the corporate world. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad partners in this change process by arming the 60 selected AFP participants, with the knowledge and skills required to fight a corporate battle, through this intense 6 months residential programme. The true value of these participants lay in their immense experience in the Armed Forces that has developed in them the attributes much needed in organisations which are designed to deliver results. The programme design, which has evolved over the last 12 years, facilitates merging their invaluable experience into corporate competence by including various important tools of management with an emphasis on incorporating the latest development. The curriculum builds on the expertise of the participants in Operations, Supply Chain Management, Human Resource Management, Communications, Strategy, Infrastructure Management, Project Management and Organisation Behaviour. The curriculum also lays emphasis on key areas such as Marketing, Finance, Business Law, Statistics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Food and Agriculture Business, Financial Decision Making, Healthcare Management, Managerial Computing and Information Systems to enable the participants in a seamlessly transition into business setup. With various learning methods and in particular the pedagogy of case study method at IIM Ahmedabad, the participants have been exposed to real-life business situations with over 100 case studies covering a wide variety of industries and disciplines of management within 24 weeks. Being a residential course, the participants are also exposed to a stimulating academic environment for professional learning with a host of facilities, a well-stocked library, industry interaction, lectures by speakers from around the world and student activities. The sincerity and levels of enthusiasm towards learning of this batch has been amazing. They seem to be ready to infuse similar synergy, professionalism and passion to your organisations and steer it towards achieving its goals and missions. I am certain that the corporates seeking prospective leaders will be pleasantly surprised by the calibre of this wonderful batch. CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE 08

  • 11. FACULTY MESSAGES Professor Chetan Soman 1 Professor Sanjay Verma 2 I am acutely aware that Operations, Planning and Execution are forte of Officers of the Armed Forces and the same was very evident in my interaction with them during the course. The adaptability of these Officers in handling the complex and challenging situations on and off the field makes them ideally suited for managing most of the business operations with ease. During the course, I was therefore only attempting to channelize this tacit knowhow into formal frameworks and leverage their knowledge of operations in terms of applicability to the corporate world. Their conventional strengths in managing teams, logical ability and conclusive deductions supported the learning process while covering the subject. With their experience of “getting things done” and knowledge base augmented during the programme, I am sure that these Officers would be appreciable assets for the organizations in the field of Operations, Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Project Management. 1 Professor Chetan Soman Operations Management and Project Management Professor Piyush Kumar Sinha 3 Professor Arvind Sahay 4 Professor N Sundaravalli 5 12 Professor Sanjay Verma Management Information Systems and Managerial Computing It is a different experience to teach the participants of AFP. Today, they are at the crossroads of starting their careers afresh in the corporate industry. However, in all aspects, I find them comparable to the students of any other programme. Some of them are knowledgeable about the most complex technologies. It was thus not difficult for most participants to absorb and imbibe the various applications of computers used in the corporate world. My endeavour has always been to enhance their inherent skills related to the analysis, design, and implementation of information systems to the business context. Understanding of emerging trends in information technology and e- commerce will give them an advantage in their new organisations, work-fields, and ventures. Their challenging questions during the classroom sessions displayed their insights into technology management. I am sure that the knowledge and applications taught during the course will provide them with the necessary skills and springboard them into success in the corporate world. 2
  • 12. Professor Piyush Kumar Sinha Marketing - I Armed Forces are not normally associated with marketing except for grand parades, public relations, exhibitions, conferences and flag marches. I was therefore, certainly delighted with the level of participation and keenness to learn displayed by the AFP participants in the class. I also found the participants intuitive while dealing with the various cases studies and coming up with innovative solutions to corporate problem situations. The highly technical background of many of these participants make them ideally suited for Business to Business marketing teams. With fast expansion of defence sector industries in India, there is also large scope for these veterans in partnering with these firms in field of marketing. I am certain that the knowledge, both theoretical and practical, gained in the course will arm these participants with the right skill for corporate success. 3 13 Professor N Sundaravalli Logistics and Supply Chain Management In my interactions with the current AFP batch I found them to be highly proficient in multiple dimensions - in terms of their qualifications, background experience, skill sets, knowledge and competencies. It is personally gratifying to be a part of their aspirational journey into the business and management world. During the course, "Logistics and Supply Chain Management", I found that many participants bring their unique and rich experience backed with requisite theoretical knowledge gained during their careers in the Armed Forces. The course structure on the subject was therefore abridged this year. The class discussions have been highly involved and engaging. I particularly appreciate the fact that the participants are happy to be intellectually challenged. It is encouraging to help them with insightful case analysis in the context of diverse situations that are typical of business environment. I see our AFP participants as potential corporate heads and leaders of the business world, who are keen to make a positive impact in their chosen domain and the society. I wish them the very best for their future. 5 The marketing course structure has been designed to ensure that the participants are well prepared for their second innings in corporates from the viewpoint of a good understanding of the conceptual and implementation aspects of marketing. The diverse background, varied fields of expertise and the fact that the participants have operated across the country was especially useful while covering the topic ‘distribution channels’. I found the class participative and engaged with the ability to think outside the box. The participants were eager to learn, articulate, proactive and always well prepared for the class. Over the years, the quality of participants has continuously improved consequent to the institution of selection procedure for the course. And this is certainly reflecting in the calibre of the persons on the batch. I am certain that AFP 2017-18 will contribute effectively and shine in their future organisations. I commend them to you for potential employment opportunities. Professor Arvind Sahay Marketing - II 4
  • 13. EXPERIENCE ENRICHED FOR EXCELLENCE Counted among the top five armed forces in the world, Indian Armed Forces are known for their professionalism, achievements, ethos, size and technology. Selection of officers into the armed forces itself is a stringent screening process which includes academic and psychological testing with lakhs of applicants staking their claim on few hundred vacancies. The Armed Forces Programme (AFP) at IIM Ahmedabad is unique, as it is the only resettlement course in the Armed Forces which undertakes further selection of participants through a separate selection procedure. The Officers retiring from Indian Armed Forces represent a group of motivated personnel who have been put through rigorous training to develop ethos of leadership, devotion, discipline and teamwork. These Officers have worked with diverse groups of people and in equally diverse and challenging circumstances thus imbibing the art of being flexible, adaptable and focused at the same time. From early stages of their respective careers, these Officers have shouldered responsibility and delivered results through a positive attitude, good communication skills and cross functional knowledge. The group, undergoing this programme, has Officers with diverse background, skills, educational qualifications and fields of service. The work experience of the participants of the course range from 7 to 30 years with an average of approximately 20 years. AFP is a six-month, full time residential Business Management Course, conducted at IIM Ahmedabad from October to March every year. The curriculum of the AFP course includes 30 specifically selected and designed modules with an aim to impart contemporary global management practices through pedagogy of case-study method, class room discussions, business presentations and industry visits. The stringent course curriculum brings to fore the analytical & managerial skills that are a pre- requisite for success in corporate career.
