3. • SELF-HEALING CONCRETE is a
concrete which heals itself when it comes in
contact with air and water, it produces lime
on outer layer of concrete.
• In most of the traditional concrete mixtures
20-30% of the cement is left unhydrated.
• If cracking of the concrete occurs, unreacted
cement grains may become exposed to
moisture penetrating the crack.
• In that case the hydration process may start
again and hydration products may fill up
and heal the crack.

INTRODUCTION.
4. CONCEPT.
SELF-HEALING CONCRETE is a product that will primarily produce limestone to
heal cracks from the surface of concrete structures. Selected bacteria of the genus Bacillus,
as well as a calcium-rich component called calcium lactate, and nitrogen and phosphorus,
are added to concrete ingredients when combined. These self-healing agents can sleep
inside the concrete for up to 200 years. However, when the concrete structure is damaged
and water begins to look for cracks in the concrete, germ particles explode when they
come in contact with water and nutrients. When used, bacteria begin to feed on calcium
lactate. As bacteria absorb edible oxygen and soluble calcium lactate is converted into
invisible limestone. Limestone hardens in a broken area and then sealed.
• Oxygen consumption during the conversion of calcium lactate to limestone has another
advantage. Oxygen is an essential element in the process of metal corrosion and when the
bacterial activity is complete it increases the strength of the reinforced concrete structure.

• This paper explained the
factors affecting, mechanism
and working, types of
bacteria.
• The author discussed about
the mechanisms of self
healing concrete. The study
shows that the crack healing
of self-healing concrete
based on expanded porous
clay minerals loaded with
bacteria and calcium lactate
is more efficient than of
concrete of the same
composition with empty
expanded clay particles.
6. FUTURE SCOPE.
Besides having an impact on public safety and construction, self healing
concrete (Bioconcrete) could benefit the environment by reducing the
quantity of concrete used around the world, which would help cut down the
material’s massive carbon footprint.
Since this method proved out to be Eco-friendly, it can bring a wide
revolution in the future.
It prevents the cracks in concrete at early stage so this can be used in large
scale construction projects with increased durability.
Reduces the corrosion of steel and thus improves the durability of steel
reinforced concrete.

7. APPLICATION.
It can be actively used in the case of roads to reduce traffic jams.
Also used by the oil and gas industries, preventing small cracks from spreading.
It can be used to strengthen both existing and new types of structural building.
It is effective in areas where buildings undergo freezing and thawing.
This can prove to be economical in the case of irrigation works, dams that are directly in contact
with water.
This concrete can be used for sectors such as tunnel-linings, structural basement walls,
highways, bridges, concrete floors, and marine structures.
It is a new technology that can give way to sustainable roads.
In high strength buildings with more bearing capacity.
