PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
CELEBRATING TWO YEARS SERVING AS THE PANIIT USA PRESIDENT
Arjun Sen, President PanIIT USA 2014-15
It gives me great pleasure to share with you what the PanIIT USA 2014-15 team has successfully
accomplished during the last two years. We started with a clear understanding of the current state of
business:
 PANIIT MUST ADD VALUE TO EVERY ALUMNUS IN THE COUNTRY ON AN ONGOING BASIS: The Global PanIIT conference
happens in the US every two years and approximately 85% of those who attend the conference are local or regional
attendees. Hence, if a city hosts a regional conference once every ten years, local alumni feel the passion of the IIT tempo
every ten years. For the rest of the country, there is a huge void unless there is a very active PanIIT USA chapter.
 PANIIT MUST BE RUN AT PAR WITH SOME OF THE BEST RUN NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COUNTRY: To arrive at
that PanIIT USA must have clearly defined goals, updated by-laws, and a Board that is very active and involved. The
financial reporting should also have the highest level of transparency and follow all IRS regulations. Each Board member
and executive committee member must sign a code of conduct document so that each individual conducts business for
PanIIT USA consistent with the charter of PanIIT USA and protects every PanIIT asset.
 PANIIT USA MUST REACH OUT TO EVERY ALUMNI IN THE COUNTRY AND BE INCLUSIVE: Historically the PanIIT
organization has been dominated by volunteers from the east and west coast. Maintaining that energy in those areas, it is
essential that we have volunteers from every part of the country, representing every major chapter, every campus; so that
the leadership team is representative of the IIT alumni body in the country.
 PANIIT USA MUST HAVE A CLEAR SUCCESSION PLAN TO BE SUCCESSFUL: Any volunteer organization is successful only
when it continues to bring in new volunteers, and outgoing volunteers continue to available in an advisory capacity as
needed. For PanIIT USA, quite a few volunteers have been doing the heavy lifting incessantly, and it was very important to
bring in new faces to the organization to balance the load and move the organization forward.
 PANIIT USA ASSETS: As the community of IIT Alumni in the USA crosses 60K it is essential that PanIIT USA protects every
asset. Our effort started with trademarking the word PanIIT and after that followed with initiatives to protect other assets.
At the end of two years, we as a team are actually proud of where we have brought the organization. Each of you, IIT alumni, are
lifetime members of PanIIT. It is with great pleasure our team presents the 2014-15 annual report to you for your review. As you
read the report, you will realize that even though the organization has taken a huge step forward, we still have a lot to do. And that
will happen if each of you choose to roll up your sleeves and join the organization. Please share your comments and how you want
to contribute to the organization by emailing me and Witty Bindra, your incoming president at support@iit.org.
Before I share the details of the 2014-15 team’s contribution, I personally want to thank the following people:
Sky (da) Basu, Priyank Saxena, J.V. Maganti, Puneet Agarwal, Witty Bindra and all other volunteers of the Executive team for their
dedication and commitment. You all are my PanIIT batchmates and getting to know you was the ultimate reward of this journey.
PanIIT USA Board Members: I truly appreciate the support of every Board member. I want to single out Shailesh, Sundi, Sandeep and
Manu for their ongoing advice and believing in me.
Sid Chowdhary and Gunjan Bagla: Thank you for your vision, hard work, and commitment to start the journey to build the PanIIT
USA infrastructure. Today we can dream because of what both of you started.
Finally, Monishi (da) Sanyal Suresh Shenoy, Ram Kelkar and Hiten(da) Ghosh: Your passion for PanIIT is very contagious and was the
inspiration for me and other volunteers to commit to this role.
Again, it was truly my honor to serve you.
IITka tempo high forever.

PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
LEADERSHIP FROM OUR CHAIRMAN
PanIIT USA was fortunate to have a
chairman of the caliber of Shailesh Mehta
for the last two years. Shailesh is the
Managing General Partner of Granite Hill
Capital Partners and manages a PE Fund.
Prior to that Shailesh was General Partner
with Invesco funds, Operating General
Partner of Sequoia India, a member of the
founding team and Chairman and CEO of
Providian Financial Corporation, Executive
Vice President at the Ohio-based Key
Corp. Shailesh has served on major
national and international boards. He was
appointed by the Governor of California,
as a trustee of California State University
system which governs 23 CSUs.
When I went to meet Shailesh at his
home before his term began, I was
personally excited to have him engaged
with PanIIT. Shailesh is a no-nonsense
leader who hit the ground running. From
the first meeting itself, he set the vision of
making PanIIT a professional organization
and got every Board member involved in
the journey.
Here are few appreciations from Board
members about Shailesh’s contribution to
PanIIT USA.
“A big thank you to Shailesh for bringing
focus on good governance, financial
transparency and professionalism at
PanIIT”, Sandeep Pandya, IIT Bombay
President, and PanIIT USA Finance Chair.
“Being involved with PanIIT USA over the
last ten years, I completely appreciate the
progress PanIIT USA made during
Shailesh’s term as Chairman,” Kiran
Thota, IIT Guwahati Representative to the
PanIIT USA Board.
“I truly enjoyed working with Shailesh in
the Board. His passion and leadership
were instrumental in my team developing the new bylaws for PanIIT USA,” Sundi Sundaresh, PanIIT USA Board member and
Governance Chair.

WORDS FROM OUR CHAIRMAN, DR. SHAILESH MEHTA
It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of PanIIT USA. I am both proud and
overwhelmed by the energetic and enthusiastic volunteers of our US alumni core.
They are our strength and their selfless devotion needs to be saluted.
I also want to thank the PanIIT USA board. They have been extremely helpful in
moving the organization forward. I always respect the collective wisdom of our
board. I must also thank the entire Silicon Valley chapter team and convener for a
very successful PanIIT conference. We have made substantial progress. We cleaned
up all past issues and set up a transparent financial reporting. Thanks to the board
team for handling this. Now we have accountability for every dollar spent.
When I joined as chairman, there were lot of scattered disjointed initiatives. With
the help of the board we created a very focused organization with a clear mission.
We got the entire team aligned to this mission and clearly defined goal.
I thought the entire board was energized and several members joined to lead
various initiatives from governance to protection of our brand and intellectual
properties.
Our EC team under the leadership of our President, Arjun Sen, did an excellent job in
building infrastructure including the database, upgraded newsletter and other
infrastructure related activities. I thank them for their tireless effort. We also opened
additional chapters and are starting to build a chapter management system.
While we have made great strides, the work is in progress. We need our business
model that can have predictable cash flow. We need to have our own full time office
and executive director. We need to invest in building the IIT brand. We need to open
many more chapters. We need more advanced systems to monitor chapters’
progress and be their resource center. I am sure the next chairman, president and
executive team will take the organization forward to a whole new height.
Best and happy holidays
Shailesh Mehta

PANIIT GOVERNANCE
Governing boards in the nonprofit contexts share many
legal precepts: the oversight role, the decision-making
power, their place in the organizational structure, and
their members’ fiduciary duties. A big part of this starts
with having current by-laws of the organization and
clearly defined roles for key office bearers. Without
updated by-laws, an organization cannot flourish, and
without the clearly defined roles, it is tough to establish
continuity and accountability in the organization.
As the PanIIT USA Board wanted to update its by-laws
and roles of key office bearers, Sundi Sundaresh was
nominated as the Governance Chair of the Board. He
was meticulous and organized; prioritized the by-law
areas, developed recommendations and got buy-in from
board members on every by-law before they were
formally approved. Sundi demonstrated that it is not
good enough to just have current by-laws, but it is
essential that there is total awareness and buy-in for
the by-laws. Over two years, it was my honor and
pleasure to work with Sundi on Governance and other
areas. Today when I look at the current by-laws, posted
in the iit.org site for all alumni to review, I can fully
appreciate the magnitude of accomplishment of the
Board in this area, under Sundi’s leadership.
PANIIT USA GOALS
Historically PanIIT has been defined more by its leaders
and their hearts. That often resulted in spreading us
thin or starting initiatives that we did not have the
resources to finish. The 2014 PanIIT USA Board defined
the two goals of the organization as:
1. Promote and enhance a common “IIT” brand
for the IIT’s and all Alumni (Branding) in the
USA.
2. Offer common Alumni Services to help alumni
achieve their professional and personal (or
lifestyle) goals in the USA.
There was a lot of discussion on activities that result in
“giving back”. The Board realized that giving back
happens at the campus level or when individual alumni
or organizations run by individuals passionately give
back. PanIIT USA currently does not have the resources
to run a “give back” initiative, nor did it want to support
one “Giving back” effort. Instead, PanIIT USA will
celebrate every give-back effort by every alumnus and
promote them using its assets; the newsletters and the
conferences. That means if you are passionately running
a give-back organization, and want to use the PanIIT
assets to promote it, please reach out to
support@iit.org.
The defining of the goals was the first step and after that, the Board and the Executive Committee had the discipline of staying
focused on the goals.

BY SUNDI SUNDARESH, Prominent Alumni Representative to the PanIIT
USA Board.
I was on a beautiful hike with my family, on a volcanic trail on the
seashore of the Big Island of Hawaii. The shrill ring of my cell phone broke
the sheer joy of that moment. Monishi Sanyal (IITM) and Robert Nathan
(IITM) were at the other end of the line inviting me to join the PanIIT USA
Board as a Prominent Alumni representative. They assured me that this
request had the support of the Board and that there would be no real
work. Right! And, of course, I believed them.
Being a passionate IITian, I had no hesitation in accepting the role, with no
idea about the task ahead of me. Soon, it became clear that, in order to be
viewed by IIT alumni nationwide, as a professional, credible alumni
services organization, we had to build services, improve execution, be
transparent, and hold ourselves accountable to the highest levels of ethics
and integrity. We needed to bring the PanIIT organization to the same
level of professionalism that we IITians are used to, as leaders in
corporate, academic and entrepreneurial settings.
IITians love to tackle problems and this Board was no exception. We
formed a Governance Committee with me as the Chairperson. Others on
the committee included the Chairman (Shailesh Mehta), President (Arjun
Sen) and a Campus representative (Kiran Thota). During the course of my
tenure, we proceeded to drive a number of initiatives based on the
problems we identified.
1. Clarify mission and rules/policies:
 Updated bylaws several times to improve Governance in areas
around mission, elections, term limits for various members
2. Hold transparent elections for office bearers:
 Defined process and led selection of President/VP for 2014-15 in
late 2013
 Improved process to select President-Elect in a timely manner -
led selection for President/VP for 2016-17 in late 2014
3. Hold ourselves to high standards of Ethics and Integrity:
 Developed Conflict of Interest Policy, guidelines and document
for Board signatures
4. Clarify roles of members serving on the Board:
 Defined roles/responsibilities for Chairman, President, VP,
Prominent Alumni and Campus Board reps
As part of this team and as one who serves on other corporate and non-
profit Boards, I am proud of the progress we have made in the last three
years. I am confident that the next group of passionate IITians serving on
this Board will take PanIIT USA to even greater heights.

PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
PANIIT FINANCES
Getting to 100% compliance and transparency in all financial transactions
have been one of the highest priorities of the Board. The Board has
achieved these goals based on the leadership of Sai Sandeep Tallam,
PanIIT USA CFO & Treasurer and Sandeep Pandya, Chairman of the
Finance Committee.
As PanIIT USA defined its Goals and Governance, it was important to
align the organization and bring all PanIIT funds under one roof. It was
also essential to document clearly defined financial rules, regulations,
and processes that should be followed by PanIIT.
Here is a challenge that we faced because we did not have clearly
defined financial rules and guidelines. The Board wanted to make sure
that the funds raised by Capital IIT Chapter for Katrina Relief were
brought in the PanIIT books. As the Board reviewed the process, it was
very clear that the Capital IIT Chapter and PanIIT USA Board had two
completely different POV on the issue and how it should be resolved.
Thanks to the Governance Chair of PanIIT USA and the leaders of Capital
IIT Chapter, the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of everyone. But
the bigger realization that came up in the process is that PanIIT must
document its code of conduct and how, as an organization it wants to
operate. Without documenting this, these kind of differences are bound
to happen. Hence, PanIIT USA team documented every element of its
working procedures including a code of conduct of its office bearers,
financial practices, fund approval and audit processes and continued to
operate in full compliance with the law and regulations. This will assist
future PanIIT office bearers, who can now focus their efforts on taking
PanIIT to the next level.
A complete financial status update has been shared with the PanIIT USA
Board in every quarterly Board meeting. Once approved by the Board,
the minutes (including financials) have been consistently posted on the
website for the view of all stakeholders. Each of you, IIT Alumni, can
review the updated PanIIT USA financial status as part of the Board
meeting minutes.

A REPORT BY CFO, PANIIT INC:
It gives me great pleasure to report to you the
following:
1. All historical financial transactions of PanIIT
Inc. have been migrated into an industry
standard accounting software i.e.
QuickBooks. Additional transactions since
then are being updated into the same
periodically. Having an updated summary of
the financial accounts in QuickBooks helps
in a smooth generation of P&L and Balance
sheets when needed.
2. Instituted the following best practices to
ensure high levels of financial transparency:
 PanIIT Financial Update to be given at all
Board Meetings including P&L and
Balance Sheet. This should also include
highlighting high value transactions and
a reconciliation against budget.
 Appropriate approval process for high
value transactions which include two
signatories for these transactions.
 Debit cards issued to President and Vice-
President to perform day to day business
transactions eliminating the requirement
for frequent reimbursements.
 Efficient filing of taxes for the national
account using the P&L and balance
sheets form QuickBooks.
 Disclosure process in place for applicable
financial transactions between the EC
team or the board members.
3. Additionally, financial guidance has been
provided via a MOU outlining the necessary
financial reporting requirements and tax
filing.

WORDS FROM INCOMING PANIIT USA PRESIDENT
Witty Bindra, Vice President, PanIIT USA 2014-15 and President, PanIIT USA 2016-17
I personally would like to say thank you to all the board members being a part of the organization
and understanding the importance of branding and alumni services. Many of these
accomplishments are, in part, the result of Shailesh’s focused leadership, his relentless attention
to detail and his zeal for the PanIIT USA family.
It has been a real honor to work alongside with Arjun Sen and help him and the team to achieve
the set goals. Arjun’s goals as president were to promote a culture of “alumni helping alumni,” enhance inter-alumni connections,
reinforce the diversity of PanIIT and increase engagement in chapter’s services to promote branding in the country. He excelled in
achieve all the goals.
I would also like to recognize Sundi Sundraesh, Prominent alumni representative who worked diligently to head the governance
team. The finances were all streamlined and the credit goes to Sandeep Pandaya for working with Sai Sandeep and the team to
make sure we maintain a total transparency and financial information is available for the board to review at any time.
I kept meeting impressive alumni who cared, who wanted to do the right thing, who were volunteering because they wanted PanIIT
to succeed. This is what it’s all about—building a sense of community so that people can succeed.
An active alumni association is vital to create a voice for alumni and this is an exciting time at PanIIT USA and I look forward to
working with all of you.
CHAPTER SERVICES UPDATE
In 2014-15, the PanIIT USA Executive Team focused its chapter services efforts in the following three areas:
1. SUPPORT CURRENT CHAPTERS AND LAUNCH NEW CHAPTERS: At the end of 2015, PanIIT USA has 23 chapters. The map
below shows the current PanIIT USA chapters. (new chapters are marked with a *)
PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
2. DEVELOPING EVERY TOOL CHAPTERS NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY RUN CHAPTER ACTIVITIES: IIT.org site has the following
information that is for immediate access:
THINKING OF STARTING A NEW CHAPTER?
Starting a new chapter is exciting for the
alumni in the area. But a good start puts the
chapter in a strong position for long-term
success. Here is a set of documents that will
help you jump start the process. The vision at
PanIIT USA chapter support is simple; we want
to assist you with all the infrastructure you
need so that your chapter team can focus on
planning a successful event. Here are the 7
steps to launching a new PanIIT USA chapter.
1. FORM LEADERSHIP TEAM:
Identify 3 to 5 alumni members or spouses
who are committed to being active
members of the leadership team for the
first 2 years. Constitute core Committees:
Membership, Sponsorship, Admin &
Finance, Events, Mentoring, PR, etc.
2. IDENTIFY ALUMNI BASE:
Identify number of alumni in the region
and gather as many emails as you can.
PanIIT USA recommends at least 25 alumni
or alumni spouses in the region to start a
chapter.
3. IDENTIFY SUPPORTERS:
Identify potential speakers, sponsors,
partners (institutions, government
agencies and other promotional bodies).
4. DEFINE FIRST YEAR VISION:
The leadership team should define the
first year vision. PanIIT USA recommends
first year vision to include defining by-
laws, creating logo, getting website up and
hosting, at least, two events.
5. CHAPTER NAME, LOGO & BY-LAWS:
Come up with a chapter name and used
the templates provided by PanIIT USA to
come up with by-laws, logo, and identify
key office bearers for the first two years.
Submit chapter documentation to PanIIT
USA for approval.
6. CREATE WEBSITE & LEVERAGE
NESWLETTER, SOCIAL MEDIA:
Use the website template provided by
PanIIT USA to upload a website on the
iit.org site. The site will be hosted by
PanIIT USA for the chapter. Use PanIIT
USA Newsletter and Social Media
7. FINANCIAL SUPPORT:
Submit proposal for financial support;
grant and loan to launch the chapter.
HOW TO TAKE YOUR CHAPTER TO THE NEXT
LEVEL:
Sometimes a chapter needs a little help to
make it to the next level. Here are the six steps
recommended by successful chapter leaders
from around the country.
 CURRENT STATE:
When was the chapter formed? How many
members do you have? How many emails
do you have? PanIIT USA will sync with your
database every quarter.
 DO YOU HAVE BY-LAWS & ARE YOU
REGISTERED?
If not, use the PanIIT by-laws tool to create
chapter’s bylaws and PanIIT registration
tool to register.
 OUTREACH: DO YOU HAVE A WEBSITE? IS
YOUR WEBSITE CONNECTED TO IIT.ORG?
If not, use the PanIIT website tool to create
your chapter’s website on iit.org and
leverage PanIIT outreach tools like the
newsletter and social media.
 HOSTING EVENTS
Use the PanIIT USA event game plans to
maximize the success of your events. The
event game plan provides best practices,
how to promote the event, event insurance
(provided free by PanIIT USA) and list of
chapters as mentors who have successfully
hosted similar events.
 CELEBRATE YOUR CHAPTER
Use PanIIT USA tools to include your
chapter’s activities in the PanIIT USA
monthly newsletter, LinkedIn and website
to celebrate your chapter.
 NATIONAL CONNECTIVITY
Attend the monthly PanIIT USA Chapter call
on the 3th Wednesday of a month. Share
and celebrate your chapter’s events and
learn from the best practices of other
chapters.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:
PanIIT USA recommends chapters to have
annual alumni awards and recognition. A list
of the awards in alignment with PanIIT USA’s
awards has been recommended in the
website. After your event, please make sure
you share the news of celebration, with
pictures, with the PanIIT USA newsletter team.
BEST PRACTICES FOR HOLDING SUCCESSFUL
EVENTS:
We interviewed chapter leaders from
around the country and had documented
some of the best practices. Here is the type
of events that have been successful
 Leadership Events (Annual Awards Gala,
Speaker, Panel Discussion, Networking,
Happy Hour, Monthly Business Luncheon)
 Give Back Events (Community Services)
 Social (Holi, Picnic, Diwali)
 Regional Multicity Event (Mini one evening
conference)
 PanIIT USA recommends, at least, three
events every calendar year. As you
complete a successful event, take a
moment to create a road-map for that
event and share it with PanIIT USA.
WHAT PANIIT CAN DO FOR YOUR CHAPTER:
Here are the value added chapter services:
OPERATIONS:
 The Chapter Safety Net: PanIIT USA
Guarantees to cover the expenses if a pre-
approved event runs in a loss.
 New Chapter Seed Money/Grant/Loan to
support chapter launch activities.
 Event Insurance: Offer free event insurance
for chapter activities.
 Chapter Website: Assist in chapter website
page and free hosting on iit.org.
 Newsletter: Outreach to alumni using PanIIT
USA Newsletter.
 Social Media (LinkedIn): Outreach to alumni
using PanIIT Social Media solution.
 Bylaws guideline, Logo kit, Event Best
Practices, Chapter Leadership Awards
FUTURE:
 Create a Speakers Bureau of prominent
alumni who can visit chapters and help
attract an audience for events.
 Create Infrastructure with national partners
what will enable Chapters to run events
with more ease.
 Event Registration: Identify an event
registration partner and consider providing
that service to the Chapters.
 Event Management: Identify and
recommend national event management
partner for larger partners.
 Contact Management & Email: Identify
national vendor and negotiate multiple
licenses for chapters.
 Resource on the website: This will include
logos and a standard template for speaker
introductions, contract.
3. CREATE A GOVERNANCE OF DIRECT CHAPTER REPRESENTATION TO THE PANIIT USA BOARD: Chapter presidents will elect
a Chapter Representative to the Board. The role of the Chapter Representative is brought chapter issues directly to the
Board and also share with Chapter presidents the tools developed by PanIIT USA. Here are reports by the first two chapter
representatives to the Board.

UPDATE FROM CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVES
PRATISH KANANI: Chapter Representative 2014
Over the last few years, PanIIT has brought a number of
existing chapters closer together, supported chapters with
core services, and helped stand-up new chapters. The
support provided to the chapters includes the ability to host
the chapter information on the PanIIT website, services to
help host local events, discounted event registration
capabilities, a chapter handbook for operations, and
increased interaction between the various chapters. All of
these together have meant that the chapters can better
provide services to the alumni.
PARESH SHAH: Chapter Representative 2015
At the beginning of the year, we had initiated a process to get
Chapter Presidents on a monthly call. We had about three
calls, and we were able to get some involvement in the
Global Conference. The goal for the Board this year was to
start two new chapters and assist in reviving others. We are
in the process of setting up a Chapter in NJ. We also have the
initiative to set up a Chapter in Miami, FL. The Ohio and
Michigan Chapter has started gathering a lot of momentum
under the leadership of Rajesh Radhakrishnan. The Dallas
Chapter ensures that it has one meeting every month at the
same location. They have also split the role of the head of the
Chapter between a President and Chairman so that there is
someone in charge if one person gets busy. The Houston
Chapter is successfully working on a give-back initiative by
having a Tech Day every quarter to teach school kids coding.
Overall, we have tried to get the Chapters to coordinate more
with the Board. The process has begun, but a lot more needs
to be done. The next year’s conference will be held in Rhode
Island under the leadership of IIT AGNE president Raj Laad.
The Board has taken initiatives to connect the NY Chapter and
the Connecticut Chapter to the Boston Chapter to help.
Hemchandra Shertukde of CT and Vinay Karle of NY have
taken the initiative to help the AGNE group for the
conference.

CHAPTER ACTIVITY UPDATE
GREATER HOUSTON: Pratish Kanani
The IIT Alumni of Greater Houston, a
501c3 organization, is focused on
helping our members connect, develop
and give back to the community. This
organization was instrumental in hosting
the IIT 2013 Global Conference and has
continued that success by hosting a
number of events over the last two
years.
Under the connecting pillar, we have
two signature events every year, a
summer bowling event and a fall picnic
event where we provide a platform for
the social connection that brings
together up to 250 of our
members. Other connect events have
included a sold-out dinner event hosted
with the ex-Captain for the Indian
Cricket Team, Ajit Wadekar. On the
professional connecting and networking
side, we have co-hosted joint
networking sessions with the MIT
Enterprise Forum in Houston. We have
had even more success under the
develop pillar. Our Career Insights
events hosted jointly with Rice
University has allowed us to bring
industry experts together to discuss
careers in areas such as Exploration &
Production, Investment Banking, and
Management Consulting. We also
mentor students at the University of
Houston. Finally, under our give back
pillar, we conduct our branded IITAGH
/C@deFest// event where we teach
middle and high school students how to
code a website in a day. The event has
been very well received and will now be
extended to the 29 campuses of the
Houston Community College. These are
just some of the events we have hosted.
All of this has been made possible by an
amazing group of volunteers who are
committed and have a strong sense of
service and connection with the
community. Photos are available on the
IITAGH website at www.iitagh.org/news
SAN DIEGO: Priyank Saxena
A group of 25 IIT Alumni and spouses
living in the San Diego area gathered in
Royal India Miramar on November 6,
2015, to mingle and meet with PanIIT
USA President Arjun Sen. Arjun
introduced IITConnect to the guests and
briefly spoke about all the activities that
PanIIT USA is involved. Everyone was
given a chance to introduce themselves.
It was wonderful to know each other
and their love for IIT family and beautiful
city of San Diego. There was an even mix
of all ages and enjoyable conversations
on various topics - spirituality, finance,
policy, and technology. The dinner was
sponsored by PanIIT USA was a cherry
on the cake.
IIT Alumni living in the San Diego area
are served by the PanIIT SoCal Chapter,
and the San Diego alumni regularly
attend the events in Los Angeles.
Everyone showed the desire to hold the
PanIIT SoCal events in San Diego as well.
The members are working on forming a
local SoCal sub team, who will take
responsibility in building the
organization in San Diego and support
the events.
COLORADO: Abhay Kale
On April 12, 2014, PanIIT Colorado
chapter hosted members of the PanIIT
USA committee. The event attracted
about 30 alumni. Given that we estimate
about 50 alumni in the Denver area, and
the event was organized on short notice,
the attendance was quite encouraging.
The visiting members, including not so-
visiting President Arjun Sen (he is local),
shared the initiative taken by this year’s
national committee, including the
creation of a comprehensive database
that will assist the PanIIT members in
business as well as personal endeavors.
The interaction level between local
members and the visitors was intense.
Topics of the discussion centered on the
database, the Houston meet, future
direction and difficulties faced by the
smaller PanIIT chapters. The success of
the endeavor was evident by the fact
that the meeting went well beyond
schedule.
We hope to organize many such
meetings in future to hear from any
other alumni passing by Denver.
Hopefully, there will be a channel to
track and contact such members.
CAROLINA: Purnima Gupta
We celebrated Dr. Narayan's new
achievement:
Professor Narayan wins 2014 North
Carolina award in science, the highest
civilian honor of the state of North
Carolina.
In the news: How B. Jayant Baliga
Transformed Power Semiconductors
The 2014 IEEE Medal of Honor recipient
pioneered the IGBT, now found in cars,
lighting, robots, and more.
Activities: We have at least 10 more
IITians moved to our area. We have
been able to involve more alumni to
come up with events of their choice.
During 2014-15, we had a regular
monthly get-together over a glass of
beer. We plan to have one social get-
together and one speaker event before
the end of the year, by new blood in the
area.

NEW ENGLAND: Raj Laad
IITSINE, the first IIT alumni chapter, is a
501c6 member organization. IITSINE
members, as well as other prominent
New England community members, felt
that IIT community must play a larger
role within the New England
community. With that objective, a new
organization IITAGNE (IIT Association of
Greater New England) was formed in
December 2014 and registered as a
non-profit 501c3 organization. IITAGNE
goals are to:
 engage in activities that
promote education and
research in STEM
 provide forums and events
that foster exchange of ideas
between members and the
larger New England
community
 recognize talent, provide
guidance and support career
development
 assist new members to adjust
to local community
IITAGNE has been busy planning for
2016 Leadership Conference to be held
on August 12-14, 2016 in Rhode Island
Convention Center, Providence, RI.
Over 50 volunteers have been meeting
earnestly 2-3 times a month in smaller
teams to present a great conference.
Please mark your calendars. We invite
you to participate in the organization;
know that it is an event of and for all
IITians.

PHOENIX: Karan Syal
The Phoenix Chapter kick-started in
late 2014 with a bunch of ASU
students, who brain-stormed ways to
connect more formally to alumni in
Arizona. We started with a small
informal lunch at a favorite Indian place
“Chutneys” and was attended by over
30 alumni who came from far and
across in Arizona. The lunch was very
well received, and it was great to see
alumni sharing stories from “back in
the days”! Building on the momentum,
the initial team of ASU students
reached out to more alumni and the
chapter team was setup with the
involvement of a few senior alumni and
their spouses in the mix. Further, the 8-
member team is divided into individual
committees from finance, events,
networking with 2-3 members each
who support each other in these
activities. The chapter team has met
with Mr. Arjun Sen, PanIIT USA
President, on two separate occasions
and we have holistically incorporated
his kind advice into our day-to-day
functioning. The team added another
feather to its success when they
organized another alumni picnic in the
valley over the summer of 2015. This
meet was attended by over 50-60
alumni with their spouses making it a
grand event with over 80 attendees. As
with the past event, this was received
with great success and many more
senior alumni offered help to take the
chapter forward. The chapter team
hopes to build on this foundation and
take the chapter forward more
comprehensively. Already events such
as “Fundae session” in collaboration
with ASU student organizations as well
as Happy hours are being planned for
the fall holiday season.
CONNECTICUT: Hemchandra Shertukde
(Sher)
CT PANIIT Chapter was formed in
December of 2014 with an initial
membership of five, which slowly rose
to 30 by mid-January of 2015. We were
to hold a function end of December
27th of 2014, but it did not materialize
since most members were out of town.
NORTHERN TEXAS: Samir Bhargava
IIT Alumni Association of North Texas
(IITNT) had regrouped earlier in the
year with the intent to increase
association activities and make it more
relevant for the Alumni in the
region. In the past 7 months, we have
started the regular monthly events for
Happy Hour and started Lunch Speaker
series. The focus for Lunch Speaker
series is to bring speakers for technical
or social issues relevant to a large
segment of our Alumni in the
region. Last month we had our annual
picnic which was attended by about
100 people representing all the legacy
IITs and graduating batches ranging
from 1966 to 2011. The attendance
underlined the need for the Alumni
association and the work we have
started on. We look forward to
increasing our activities next year with
more participation from the Alumni.

IITCONNECT - PANIIT USA DATABASE: AN UPDATE BY SKY BASU
In 2014, a group of IITians with the new
leadership of Arjun Sen started the PanIIT
alumni database project. In the past, there
were multiple efforts for the same without
success. The database team took a two-
phase approach with some reasonable goals
for each phase. They were:
Short Term (6 months to 1 year)
 Start Populating Database with
Updated Quality Content
 Implement Registration and Edit
Pages for Alumni Profiles
 Implement Basic Search Capability
 Implement Communication
between Alumni Capability
Long Term (1 to 2 years)
 Implement Mass Email Messages
Specific for Campus, Chapters
Feature
 Implement Integration/
Synchronization with social media –
LinkedIn
 Implement Synchronization with
Campus Databases
Based on the past experience the team
decided that a custom development would
not be an option due to the high risk, high
cost and high involvement requirements. The
search for vendors will be limited to those
who have a SaaS solution.
The team developed a detailed requirements
list to identify vendors. With active
participation from various team members, an
initial short list was made and then a final
selection. The winner was
‘Yourmembership.com’. While the team’s
primary criteria were aligned to the Database
requirements, the selected service offered
additional features of mass mailing and
conference registration including payment
processing which allowed PanIIT to
consolidate services to a single vendor and
reduce complexity and cost. That was nice!
After the official inauguration of the
Database in July this year at the PanIIT
conference in Bay area, today the registered membership in
the database grew to 29,387! Though this is the single largest
PanIIT database in the world, we are still
missing many IIT alumni in the USA. The team
hopes eventually this will become the single
definitive global database for all alumni from all
campuses of past, present, and future.
It is easy to say that the success of the database
project was due to the diligence, hard work and
leadership of team members, but there were a
few more factors, which also worked well. They
are:
 A very well defined goal at the beginning
and a process to follow. The PanIIT president
Arjun Sen and Vice President (President elect
for 2016) Witty Bindra clearly deserve the
kudos for that.
 Some of the young and energetic team
members working hard to make it possible. One
person, I should mention specifically is Clint
McCaskill who helped in the process at every
step.
 The support/ service team of
Yourmembership.com, which patiently
implemented all the requirements to make the
service intuitive and useful.
 Finally, the support of the Board of PanIIT,
the USA who has shown the trust and faith in
the database team to make decisions and move
forward at various stages.
PANIIT WOMEN’S DATABASE
PanIIT USA Executive Team is very proud of this
accomplishment. This started as a dream and
very quickly went from idea to plan to
implementation phase. The passionate
leadership of Mandy Pant and Ranjani Saigal
blended with effective outreach by the
communication team lead by Priyank Saxena
resulted in rapid launch of the database. The
Bay Area chapter took this to the next level
where they hosted the first IIT Alumni Women’s
day to launch the 2015 conference. This will be
a very powerful leadership group within PanIIT
USA and we expect big things from the group in
future.

PANIIT COMMUNICATIONS: AN UPDATE BY PRIYANK SAXENA
The PanIIT USA Team: Arjun Sen, Priyank Saxena, Karan
Sayal, Clint McCaskill, Mandy Pant, Ranjani Saigal, Ashish
Kumar, Ravi Bollina, Anvita Bajpai
The PanIIT Communication team began our term under the
leadership of Arjun Sen in January 2014 with the theme of
"Building the Bridges". In today's world, communication
technology is that bridge that connects the alumni not only in
their cities but also across the states and countries. For the
Communication Team, the mission was to provide the IIT Alumni
as many technology tools as possible to connect with each other.
In the last two years, we are proud to say that we provided a
brand new iit.org website, vibrant LinkedIn Social Media Group,
content rich newsletters, and a user friendly database IITConnect
to reach out to fellow alumni. Also, the Communication Team
was always ready to assist the alumni at the short notice,
whether it was an urgent communication or fund raising or
promoting alumni conferences and other chapter events.
List of accomplishments:
1. Website: A brand new website that provides a one-stop
shop to provide access to PanIIT USA Board members,
US alumni chapters, and their representative, Campus
organizations, past conferences, newsletter archives
and news items and upcoming events. Historically
PanIIT had built websites, but the challenge has been
keeping it updated. The current website was built with
one clear focus; it can be updated by simple “copy,
paste and save.” For each chapter, the content was
developed after interviewing chapter members.
Chapter members simply wanted to find out the
following:
a. Is there an active chapter near me? Putting current
chapter events on the website makes members
realize that there is a chapter nearby.
b. Whom should I contact? A picture of the chapter
president and his/her contact information makes it
easy for alumni to contact chapter members.
c. When is the next event? This information gives a
member a reason to connect with the chapter.
Recently, we have integrated the IITConnect database
that facilitates alumni to alumni connections at the
individual level. A website design and security policy
was developed by the communication team. The
website is updated weekly.
2. Social Media: The IIT Alumni LinkedIn Group is the
official social media group of PanIIT USA. It has 28500+
IIT alumni from around the world. The LinkedIn team
has put a lot of effort in deleting the non-alumni
members and making the group spam free. The joining
requests are approved only after a thorough check of
individual profiles according to the policy developed by
the team. Due to the active management, the traffic on
discussion and jobs pages have greatly increased; by
100%.
Per the request of the alumni, several special interest
subgroups were created based on geographical region
and professional interests. For the first time, IIT Women
alumni under the leadership of Ranjani Saigal and
Mandy Pant was created. The group is 850+ members
strong and it engages the women alumni in providing
tools for their professional growth.
In addition to LinkedIn, the local chapters and campuses
use Facebook and WhatsApp groups to promote their
events and establish alumni to alumni connections. A
PanIIT Twitter account was used to communicate key
PanIIT conference message to IIT alumni.
3. Newsletter: Newsletter team comprising of a creative
cell, published 18 newsletters in the last two years,
which are archived at the iit.org website. With the
outreach to more than 30K alumni living in the USA, the
newsletter provided a platform:
a. for the campus organizations to write articles about
the history and accomplishments,
b. to fellow alumni to share their wisdom with us on
Guru Funda and Insights columns
c. to creative writers to share their memories from
the campus activities on Nostalgia column.
d. to authors to speak about their books and articles
e. to Alumni Chapters in the USA to showcase their
events and publicize their upcoming events
f. and finally, news articles in the media about the IIT
campuses and IIT Alumni accomplishments.
4. IIT Connect: The IIT Connect database was created by
the Database Team. Communication Team provided all
the tactical support and infrastructure in bringing the
product to fruition. The database is hosted on the iit.org
website. A lot of hours were spent by the team in
writing a security policy to ensure the safety of the
database.
In the years 2014 and 2015, this team has done their part in
building the infrastructure - the Bridges. The challenge for the
next team will be to how to make the alumni take their first
steps in crossing those bridges. I am sure once one has taken the
first step on these bridges, it is going to be a rewarding
experience and life-long relationship with an amazing
community - called IIT Alumni.
As a volunteer, it was a rewarding experience for me to work
with a team of highly energetic volunteers who are 100%
dedicated to the cause of IIT Alumni. I want to thank each and
every one in my team for their full commitment and can-do
attitude, because of which we never doubted our abilities in
setting the big goals and accomplishing them. I cherish all the
learning and relationships I gained along the way.

ALUMNI SERVICES VISION BY J.V. MAGANTI
With more than 60 thousand alumni from India in the USA,
PanIIT is one of the most dynamic and active alumni
organizations in the USA, boasting prominent and highly
accomplished luminaries in academia, technology, finance,
and entrepreneurship. Offering Alumni Services, primarily
educational and networking opportunities, is the key to
attracting and retaining membership.
As part of our educational outreach, PanIIT hosts its flagship
“Global Conference” organized biennially in the USA for four
days with a number of presentations on varying topics. In
addition, most chapters organize educational seminars or
day-long conferences for their members.
DIRECTORY SERVICES
The PanIIT Website is the face of the organization, and all of
the alumni services are provided through this interface. The
Directory Service is one of the most useful alumni services
and number one reason that brings alumni to the website.
With a lot of effort on the part of the database team, a robust
database of the backend (clean and verified data for over 30
thousand alumni), and a user-friendly interface on the
frontend has been finally launched this year. We currently
provide directory services with simple search options. We
provided much publicity and promotion of the alumni
database and its value through PanIIT emails over the last few
months as well as through distribution of bookmarks at the
recently held annual conference at Santa Clara. With the
strong database in place now, there are many potential
opportunities to leverage this infrastructure to provide
enhanced directory services. As part of our future
enhancements, we envision the ability to search and locate
alumni based on specific criteria –mentor/mentee,
investor/entrepreneur, collaborators, employer/employee
(job boards), etc.
MERCHANDIZE SERVICES
To create PanIIT pride and a sense of loyalty towards
respective campuses, we realized there is a huge potential for
merchandise sales with IIT-insignia (T-Shirts, Hats, Coffee
Mugs, Water Bottles, Coat Pins, Travel Gear - backpacks and
other smaller items) with either PanIIT exclusive logos or the
PanIIT logo in combination with a specific IIT campus logo,
depending on the volume of interest. We are currently
working on sourcing vendors to undertake this initiative.
BUSINESS SERVICES
There is good potential to provide the following personalized
services to alumni in a cost-effective manner.
 Life Insurance plans and products
 Financial Planning & Services
 Advertisements on the PanIIT website, Newsletters,
Conference Brochures
 Funding opportunities: Connecting entrepreneurs
and investors
We have made contacts with several companies
(AnyPerk.com, Beyondwork.com, Passportunlimited.com,
etc.) and have had extensive discussions. However, we still
have not determined any vendors that will suit our needs. As
PanIIT is a not-for-profit and without a membership fee, we
find it difficult to initiate these services as most of the
vendors require upfront and ongoing revenue to provide their
services. We are currently exploring alternatives – providing
advertising space on our website and/or broadcasting their
services to our members.
TRAVEL SERVICES
We plan to create and promote tour packages by travel
agencies exclusively designed for IIT Alumni. This seems to
be one of the most promising revenue-generating services we
can create for alumni.
We plan to create surveys to capture Alumni interest on the
types of tours they are interested in cultural, historical,
archeological, domestic international, duration of tours, price
points, interest in joining other alumni at same age-
group/interests/batch mates/same campus, etc.). We aim to
find vendors to provide these travel services at rates far less
expensively than alumni would be able to find on their own.
We have made contacts with the University of Michigan
Alumni Services Travel department as they have an excellent
and very successful travel program specifically catering to
alumni and their families. The tours are primarily run by
faculty (subject matter experts for each of the tours). We
have gathered their brochures and tour operators’
information. We are in the process of contacting the tour
operators to have detailed discussions on the packages they
offer and hope to soon develop a comprehensive travel
services program for PanIIT USA for 2016.

PANIIT BRANDING
By now you must be wondering, if we forgot to work on Branding. No, we did not.
One of the defining moments for PanIIT Branding was the 60 minute episode on IIT. Since then quite a few times we have tried to
create 60 minutes part 2. But when we reflected on the branding needs of the day, we came up with the following conclusions:
1. In the last 10 years, the world has changed. The median age of 60 minute viewers is nearly 60 years. Social media has taken
over and instead of us trying to tell the news, we need to discover content about us that is content worthy.
2. The 60 minutes episode was based on IIT JEE being the world’s toughest exam. We can go and own that again but the group
felt that we want to own instead the accomplishments of IITians in this country.
As we started thinking more about branding IITian’s accomplishments, I personally did three things:
1. Went through the LinkedIn profiles of some of the prominent alumni. IIT campus and IIT news was in quite a few cases hidden
in the profile.
2. Watched media interviews of prominent alumni and again in most cases there was no mention of IIT in their interview.
3. Finally I surveyed a group of 100 alumni of different ages and asked them three questions. How do you celebrate IIT when
you are talking to your buddy from IIT? How would you describe IIT and IITians when your write an article and finally how
would you describe IITians when you are answering questions to a group of media. There was a clear consensus among the
alumni answers. Here are the answers to the questions.
a. When talking to your buddy from IIT: “We are the best.” “We are the cream of the nation.”
b. When writing an article about IITians: “We can do anything.” We have made an impact in every field you can
imagine.”
c. When facing a group of live media: “We are the best because we all went through the world’s toughest exam.”
As I reflected on the survey responses, I realized that for any reputed University in USA, the power of networking starts after one
graduates from the university. That is the defining factor for an Ivy League school. For us the defining moment is the entry point.
Based on this it was very clear that we need to first market to our own alumni first, show them the power of being an alumni in this
country. Hence we started the database project where we want to connect every alumni with each other. We strongly believe that
each of us can gain significantly from the connection to 60,000 other alumni in the country. Once that is in place, then we can further
strengthen the “IITIAN PRIDE” by sharing stories of IITian contributions first to the group. Then we will be ready to launch a national
initiative to talk about why we are IITians are the best. It is then the message will be so powerful that the next morning, when you
walk into a meeting, your colleagues will say, “Did you not go to that University that everyone is talking about? Truly impressive, the
magnitude of contribution from your alumni!” Of course you will then feel the true power of the brand, as a confident smile will break
in your lips.
So, please join the database, “Get to know” each other, “Help” each other and feel the power of the IITian group in this country. And
I assure you that the 2016-17 team has big plans on the branding, building on the internal branding work the 2014-15 team has
accomplished. In the next page I will share with you a profile of IITians in the country; that will demonstrate to you the elite group you
are part of.

PANIIT CONFERENCE UPDATE
2015 SANTA CLARA GLC CONFERENCE BY SUBHASH TANTRY
The recent IIT Global Leadership Conference 2015 from July
23-25 in the San Francisco Bay Area, like other PanIIT USA
Conferences in the past, has been a great conference
experience that matched its slogan: The Internet of People.
The Conference brought together the brightest minds to
learn from and collaborate with to help us grow in our own
way. We had more than 2000 registrants, with 130+
fascinating and thought provoking speakers and panelists
with magnanimous contributions by Sponsors and 8
Distinguished Alumni of the IITs. It also added to the coffers
of the PanIIT movement in the US as well!
What distinguishes these conferences is the IIT spirit that we
exude. IITians are a unique group of people. We are
passionate about things we like to do. We try to do better
than our best, and in the process, we do well by others.
Wherever we go, we seek to create a virtuous circle,
representing the theme of this conference by innovating,
inspiring, achieving and giving back.
The IIT spirit came through from the more than 100 IIT
volunteers including their spouses who worked hard, inspired
their teams, and innovated along the way (including the
creation of a unique location sensitive mobile app for the
Conference) thereby achieving a Conference that was much
appreciated. It was their way of giving back to their alma
mater in kind with a drive to excel that we can all be proud
of.
All in all, it was a blast being a volunteer cherishing every
moment of it!

2016 BOSTON LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE BY RAJ LAAD
The 21st century is witness to accelerating change across
economies and beyond political boundaries. With growing
populations, global climatic changes, and resource limitations
the challenges seem daunting. In the past human ingenuity
has delivered a constant stream of innovations to address
such issues. What will tomorrow bring?
New England is host to world class thought leaders and game-
changing innovations that address these challenges and can
dramatically transform the future. Their ideas and
innovations have ranged from technologies that augment life
at home to enhancements that address health and lifestyle of
changing demographics; from large scale disruptions in
established industries to major policy impacts at city, state
and national levels.
The IIT Association of Greater New England (IIT AGNE) invites
you to join us as we bring together this dazzling array of
thought leaders across industries and technologies, a
gathering to paint a vision of the future. To highlight the
opportunities for change and to explore how it will impact
you personally, at work and on the larger society. The theme
of the 2016 Leadership Conference “Leading transformation
for a better tomorrow: Technologies that lift the human
spirit” highlights the transformational impact science and
technology have on our lives.
The 2016 Leadership Conference will be held at the Rhode
Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island from
August 12 to 14, 2016. Past IIT conferences enjoyed a breadth
of attendance from senior business executives to academic
and technology decision makers. Your support and the
presence of your colleagues will make the difference in
increasing understanding worldwide.

WORDS FROM CAMPUS REPRESENTATIVES TO THE PANIIT USA BOARD
IIT BHU, MANU GOYAL
As the tenure of the PANIIT USA
Board comes to an end in 2015, it is
time for a reflection on the
achievements of this Board.
The current Board made efforts to
establish processes and best practices
in terms of governance, define the
roles of the Executive Committee
members, create the infrastructure to
bring the alumni base together, as a
platform from which the next level of
activities can be launched.
Among other things, the efforts to
secure the intellectual property by
trademarking the name “Indian
Institute of Technology”, “PANIIT
USA”, and the logo will go a long way
to help the incoming leadership in
future years.
Laying down corporate governance
procedures and clarity in the roles
and responsibilities of the various
members of the executive committee
would provide the foundation for the
continued efforts in that direction.
By creating the database and website
for the alumni, now a platform has
been provided, to launch activities
that are directly related to the
organization’s objectives of “Brand
Building” and “Alumni Services.”
In summary, the work of this board
should be viewed as the foundation
upon which the organization will be
built in the future.
Overall, an excellent job by the
Executive Committee and the PANIIT
USA Board in this term.
Best wishes to the incoming team to
take the mission of the organization
further.
GUWAHATI CHAPTER, KIRAN THOTA
PanIIT USA has been a work in
progress since its inception. We had a
great set of programs and efforts
catering the Alumni early on. As IITs
grew, so did membership and the
officers. However, the efforts didn’t
always scale. Mission creep, frequent
change of guard, lack of clear role
descriptions and accountability have
hindered the prospects of PanIIT as a
growing organization.
After the 2005 overhaul of PanIIT USA
(organization structure), this is the
first time we have revisited the
organization structure and fixed the
gaps. The governance team led by
Sundi had gathered inputs from all
parties and defined the
1. Roles, responsibilities
2. Election procedures
3. Tenure
4. Ethics, compliance and
conflict of interest for
various elected members.
The rules of engagement between the
various members have been well-
addressed for smooth operations and
the mission better interpreted.
Having served with PanIIT for over 12
years, I consider 2015 as a key
milestone in achieving the growth
planned for the future. Having built a
strong foundation, I am confident
PanIIT USA can achieve the set goals
effectively.
IIT ROORKEE, ANOOP VERMA
PANIIT evolved further as a structured
organization under the leadership of
the executive committee led by Arjun
Sen. Arjun, and his team were
instrumental in ensuring that all
campuses were engaged and
participated to take the movement to
the next level.
Expanding the volunteer base and
involving the local chapters helped
the board in broadening the appeal of
the engaging in alumni affairs for
alumni across the board. It helped in
establishing the true national
character of the community.
Supporting teams in executing
difficult initiatives resulted in huge
successes with global conference and
initiatives such as the global directory.
As board members and on behalf of
the Roorkee campus alumni, we are
proud of being a part of these
accomplishments and thank everyone
on the board and the executive
committee for a productive tenure.

PanIIT 2014-2015 Annual Report

  • 1.
  • 2. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CELEBRATING TWO YEARS SERVING AS THE PANIIT USA PRESIDENT Arjun Sen, President PanIIT USA 2014-15 It gives me great pleasure to share with you what the PanIIT USA 2014-15 team has successfully accomplished during the last two years. We started with a clear understanding of the current state of business:  PANIIT MUST ADD VALUE TO EVERY ALUMNUS IN THE COUNTRY ON AN ONGOING BASIS: The Global PanIIT conference happens in the US every two years and approximately 85% of those who attend the conference are local or regional attendees. Hence, if a city hosts a regional conference once every ten years, local alumni feel the passion of the IIT tempo every ten years. For the rest of the country, there is a huge void unless there is a very active PanIIT USA chapter.  PANIIT MUST BE RUN AT PAR WITH SOME OF THE BEST RUN NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COUNTRY: To arrive at that PanIIT USA must have clearly defined goals, updated by-laws, and a Board that is very active and involved. The financial reporting should also have the highest level of transparency and follow all IRS regulations. Each Board member and executive committee member must sign a code of conduct document so that each individual conducts business for PanIIT USA consistent with the charter of PanIIT USA and protects every PanIIT asset.  PANIIT USA MUST REACH OUT TO EVERY ALUMNI IN THE COUNTRY AND BE INCLUSIVE: Historically the PanIIT organization has been dominated by volunteers from the east and west coast. Maintaining that energy in those areas, it is essential that we have volunteers from every part of the country, representing every major chapter, every campus; so that the leadership team is representative of the IIT alumni body in the country.  PANIIT USA MUST HAVE A CLEAR SUCCESSION PLAN TO BE SUCCESSFUL: Any volunteer organization is successful only when it continues to bring in new volunteers, and outgoing volunteers continue to available in an advisory capacity as needed. For PanIIT USA, quite a few volunteers have been doing the heavy lifting incessantly, and it was very important to bring in new faces to the organization to balance the load and move the organization forward.  PANIIT USA ASSETS: As the community of IIT Alumni in the USA crosses 60K it is essential that PanIIT USA protects every asset. Our effort started with trademarking the word PanIIT and after that followed with initiatives to protect other assets. At the end of two years, we as a team are actually proud of where we have brought the organization. Each of you, IIT alumni, are lifetime members of PanIIT. It is with great pleasure our team presents the 2014-15 annual report to you for your review. As you read the report, you will realize that even though the organization has taken a huge step forward, we still have a lot to do. And that will happen if each of you choose to roll up your sleeves and join the organization. Please share your comments and how you want to contribute to the organization by emailing me and Witty Bindra, your incoming president at support@iit.org. Before I share the details of the 2014-15 team’s contribution, I personally want to thank the following people: Sky (da) Basu, Priyank Saxena, J.V. Maganti, Puneet Agarwal, Witty Bindra and all other volunteers of the Executive team for their dedication and commitment. You all are my PanIIT batchmates and getting to know you was the ultimate reward of this journey. PanIIT USA Board Members: I truly appreciate the support of every Board member. I want to single out Shailesh, Sundi, Sandeep and Manu for their ongoing advice and believing in me. Sid Chowdhary and Gunjan Bagla: Thank you for your vision, hard work, and commitment to start the journey to build the PanIIT USA infrastructure. Today we can dream because of what both of you started. Finally, Monishi (da) Sanyal Suresh Shenoy, Ram Kelkar and Hiten(da) Ghosh: Your passion for PanIIT is very contagious and was the inspiration for me and other volunteers to commit to this role. Again, it was truly my honor to serve you. IITka tempo high forever. Arjun Sen PAGE 2 OF 18

  • 4. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT LEADERSHIP FROM OUR CHAIRMAN PanIIT USA was fortunate to have a chairman of the caliber of Shailesh Mehta for the last two years. Shailesh is the Managing General Partner of Granite Hill Capital Partners and manages a PE Fund. Prior to that Shailesh was General Partner with Invesco funds, Operating General Partner of Sequoia India, a member of the founding team and Chairman and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation, Executive Vice President at the Ohio-based Key Corp. Shailesh has served on major national and international boards. He was appointed by the Governor of California, as a trustee of California State University system which governs 23 CSUs. When I went to meet Shailesh at his home before his term began, I was personally excited to have him engaged with PanIIT. Shailesh is a no-nonsense leader who hit the ground running. From the first meeting itself, he set the vision of making PanIIT a professional organization and got every Board member involved in the journey. Here are few appreciations from Board members about Shailesh’s contribution to PanIIT USA. “A big thank you to Shailesh for bringing focus on good governance, financial transparency and professionalism at PanIIT”, Sandeep Pandya, IIT Bombay President, and PanIIT USA Finance Chair. “Being involved with PanIIT USA over the last ten years, I completely appreciate the progress PanIIT USA made during Shailesh’s term as Chairman,” Kiran Thota, IIT Guwahati Representative to the PanIIT USA Board. “I truly enjoyed working with Shailesh in the Board. His passion and leadership were instrumental in my team developing the new bylaws for PanIIT USA,” Sundi Sundaresh, PanIIT USA Board member and Governance Chair. PAGE 4 OF 18 WORDS FROM OUR CHAIRMAN, DR. SHAILESH MEHTA It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of PanIIT USA. I am both proud and overwhelmed by the energetic and enthusiastic volunteers of our US alumni core. They are our strength and their selfless devotion needs to be saluted. I also want to thank the PanIIT USA board. They have been extremely helpful in moving the organization forward. I always respect the collective wisdom of our board. I must also thank the entire Silicon Valley chapter team and convener for a very successful PanIIT conference. We have made substantial progress. We cleaned up all past issues and set up a transparent financial reporting. Thanks to the board team for handling this. Now we have accountability for every dollar spent. When I joined as chairman, there were lot of scattered disjointed initiatives. With the help of the board we created a very focused organization with a clear mission. We got the entire team aligned to this mission and clearly defined goal. I thought the entire board was energized and several members joined to lead various initiatives from governance to protection of our brand and intellectual properties. Our EC team under the leadership of our President, Arjun Sen, did an excellent job in building infrastructure including the database, upgraded newsletter and other infrastructure related activities. I thank them for their tireless effort. We also opened additional chapters and are starting to build a chapter management system. While we have made great strides, the work is in progress. We need our business model that can have predictable cash flow. We need to have our own full time office and executive director. We need to invest in building the IIT brand. We need to open many more chapters. We need more advanced systems to monitor chapters’ progress and be their resource center. I am sure the next chairman, president and executive team will take the organization forward to a whole new height. Best and happy holidays Shailesh Mehta
  • 5. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PANIIT GOVERNANCE Governing boards in the nonprofit contexts share many legal precepts: the oversight role, the decision-making power, their place in the organizational structure, and their members’ fiduciary duties. A big part of this starts with having current by-laws of the organization and clearly defined roles for key office bearers. Without updated by-laws, an organization cannot flourish, and without the clearly defined roles, it is tough to establish continuity and accountability in the organization. As the PanIIT USA Board wanted to update its by-laws and roles of key office bearers, Sundi Sundaresh was nominated as the Governance Chair of the Board. He was meticulous and organized; prioritized the by-law areas, developed recommendations and got buy-in from board members on every by-law before they were formally approved. Sundi demonstrated that it is not good enough to just have current by-laws, but it is essential that there is total awareness and buy-in for the by-laws. Over two years, it was my honor and pleasure to work with Sundi on Governance and other areas. Today when I look at the current by-laws, posted in the iit.org site for all alumni to review, I can fully appreciate the magnitude of accomplishment of the Board in this area, under Sundi’s leadership. PANIIT USA GOALS Historically PanIIT has been defined more by its leaders and their hearts. That often resulted in spreading us thin or starting initiatives that we did not have the resources to finish. The 2014 PanIIT USA Board defined the two goals of the organization as: 1. Promote and enhance a common “IIT” brand for the IIT’s and all Alumni (Branding) in the USA. 2. Offer common Alumni Services to help alumni achieve their professional and personal (or lifestyle) goals in the USA. There was a lot of discussion on activities that result in “giving back”. The Board realized that giving back happens at the campus level or when individual alumni or organizations run by individuals passionately give back. PanIIT USA currently does not have the resources to run a “give back” initiative, nor did it want to support one “Giving back” effort. Instead, PanIIT USA will celebrate every give-back effort by every alumnus and promote them using its assets; the newsletters and the conferences. That means if you are passionately running a give-back organization, and want to use the PanIIT assets to promote it, please reach out to support@iit.org. The defining of the goals was the first step and after that, the Board and the Executive Committee had the discipline of staying focused on the goals. PAGE 5 OF 18 BY SUNDI SUNDARESH, Prominent Alumni Representative to the PanIIT USA Board. I was on a beautiful hike with my family, on a volcanic trail on the seashore of the Big Island of Hawaii. The shrill ring of my cell phone broke the sheer joy of that moment. Monishi Sanyal (IITM) and Robert Nathan (IITM) were at the other end of the line inviting me to join the PanIIT USA Board as a Prominent Alumni representative. They assured me that this request had the support of the Board and that there would be no real work. Right! And, of course, I believed them. Being a passionate IITian, I had no hesitation in accepting the role, with no idea about the task ahead of me. Soon, it became clear that, in order to be viewed by IIT alumni nationwide, as a professional, credible alumni services organization, we had to build services, improve execution, be transparent, and hold ourselves accountable to the highest levels of ethics and integrity. We needed to bring the PanIIT organization to the same level of professionalism that we IITians are used to, as leaders in corporate, academic and entrepreneurial settings. IITians love to tackle problems and this Board was no exception. We formed a Governance Committee with me as the Chairperson. Others on the committee included the Chairman (Shailesh Mehta), President (Arjun Sen) and a Campus representative (Kiran Thota). During the course of my tenure, we proceeded to drive a number of initiatives based on the problems we identified. 1. Clarify mission and rules/policies:  Updated bylaws several times to improve Governance in areas around mission, elections, term limits for various members 2. Hold transparent elections for office bearers:  Defined process and led selection of President/VP for 2014-15 in late 2013  Improved process to select President-Elect in a timely manner - led selection for President/VP for 2016-17 in late 2014 3. Hold ourselves to high standards of Ethics and Integrity:  Developed Conflict of Interest Policy, guidelines and document for Board signatures 4. Clarify roles of members serving on the Board:  Defined roles/responsibilities for Chairman, President, VP, Prominent Alumni and Campus Board reps As part of this team and as one who serves on other corporate and non- profit Boards, I am proud of the progress we have made in the last three years. I am confident that the next group of passionate IITians serving on this Board will take PanIIT USA to even greater heights. Sundi Sundaresh
  • 6. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PANIIT FINANCES Getting to 100% compliance and transparency in all financial transactions have been one of the highest priorities of the Board. The Board has achieved these goals based on the leadership of Sai Sandeep Tallam, PanIIT USA CFO & Treasurer and Sandeep Pandya, Chairman of the Finance Committee. As PanIIT USA defined its Goals and Governance, it was important to align the organization and bring all PanIIT funds under one roof. It was also essential to document clearly defined financial rules, regulations, and processes that should be followed by PanIIT. Here is a challenge that we faced because we did not have clearly defined financial rules and guidelines. The Board wanted to make sure that the funds raised by Capital IIT Chapter for Katrina Relief were brought in the PanIIT books. As the Board reviewed the process, it was very clear that the Capital IIT Chapter and PanIIT USA Board had two completely different POV on the issue and how it should be resolved. Thanks to the Governance Chair of PanIIT USA and the leaders of Capital IIT Chapter, the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of everyone. But the bigger realization that came up in the process is that PanIIT must document its code of conduct and how, as an organization it wants to operate. Without documenting this, these kind of differences are bound to happen. Hence, PanIIT USA team documented every element of its working procedures including a code of conduct of its office bearers, financial practices, fund approval and audit processes and continued to operate in full compliance with the law and regulations. This will assist future PanIIT office bearers, who can now focus their efforts on taking PanIIT to the next level. A complete financial status update has been shared with the PanIIT USA Board in every quarterly Board meeting. Once approved by the Board, the minutes (including financials) have been consistently posted on the website for the view of all stakeholders. Each of you, IIT Alumni, can review the updated PanIIT USA financial status as part of the Board meeting minutes. PAGE 6 OF 18 A REPORT BY CFO, PANIIT INC: It gives me great pleasure to report to you the following: 1. All historical financial transactions of PanIIT Inc. have been migrated into an industry standard accounting software i.e. QuickBooks. Additional transactions since then are being updated into the same periodically. Having an updated summary of the financial accounts in QuickBooks helps in a smooth generation of P&L and Balance sheets when needed. 2. Instituted the following best practices to ensure high levels of financial transparency:  PanIIT Financial Update to be given at all Board Meetings including P&L and Balance Sheet. This should also include highlighting high value transactions and a reconciliation against budget.  Appropriate approval process for high value transactions which include two signatories for these transactions.  Debit cards issued to President and Vice- President to perform day to day business transactions eliminating the requirement for frequent reimbursements.  Efficient filing of taxes for the national account using the P&L and balance sheets form QuickBooks.  Disclosure process in place for applicable financial transactions between the EC team or the board members. 3. Additionally, financial guidance has been provided via a MOU outlining the necessary financial reporting requirements and tax filing.
  • 7. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT WORDS FROM INCOMING PANIIT USA PRESIDENT Witty Bindra, Vice President, PanIIT USA 2014-15 and President, PanIIT USA 2016-17 I personally would like to say thank you to all the board members being a part of the organization and understanding the importance of branding and alumni services. Many of these accomplishments are, in part, the result of Shailesh’s focused leadership, his relentless attention to detail and his zeal for the PanIIT USA family. It has been a real honor to work alongside with Arjun Sen and help him and the team to achieve the set goals. Arjun’s goals as president were to promote a culture of “alumni helping alumni,” enhance inter-alumni connections, reinforce the diversity of PanIIT and increase engagement in chapter’s services to promote branding in the country. He excelled in achieve all the goals. I would also like to recognize Sundi Sundraesh, Prominent alumni representative who worked diligently to head the governance team. The finances were all streamlined and the credit goes to Sandeep Pandaya for working with Sai Sandeep and the team to make sure we maintain a total transparency and financial information is available for the board to review at any time. I kept meeting impressive alumni who cared, who wanted to do the right thing, who were volunteering because they wanted PanIIT to succeed. This is what it’s all about—building a sense of community so that people can succeed. An active alumni association is vital to create a voice for alumni and this is an exciting time at PanIIT USA and I look forward to working with all of you. CHAPTER SERVICES UPDATE In 2014-15, the PanIIT USA Executive Team focused its chapter services efforts in the following three areas: 1. SUPPORT CURRENT CHAPTERS AND LAUNCH NEW CHAPTERS: At the end of 2015, PanIIT USA has 23 chapters. The map below shows the current PanIIT USA chapters. (new chapters are marked with a *) PAGE 7 OF 18
  • 8. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT 2. DEVELOPING EVERY TOOL CHAPTERS NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY RUN CHAPTER ACTIVITIES: IIT.org site has the following information that is for immediate access: THINKING OF STARTING A NEW CHAPTER? Starting a new chapter is exciting for the alumni in the area. But a good start puts the chapter in a strong position for long-term success. Here is a set of documents that will help you jump start the process. The vision at PanIIT USA chapter support is simple; we want to assist you with all the infrastructure you need so that your chapter team can focus on planning a successful event. Here are the 7 steps to launching a new PanIIT USA chapter. 1. FORM LEADERSHIP TEAM: Identify 3 to 5 alumni members or spouses who are committed to being active members of the leadership team for the first 2 years. Constitute core Committees: Membership, Sponsorship, Admin & Finance, Events, Mentoring, PR, etc. 2. IDENTIFY ALUMNI BASE: Identify number of alumni in the region and gather as many emails as you can. PanIIT USA recommends at least 25 alumni or alumni spouses in the region to start a chapter. 3. IDENTIFY SUPPORTERS: Identify potential speakers, sponsors, partners (institutions, government agencies and other promotional bodies). 4. DEFINE FIRST YEAR VISION: The leadership team should define the first year vision. PanIIT USA recommends first year vision to include defining by- laws, creating logo, getting website up and hosting, at least, two events. 5. CHAPTER NAME, LOGO & BY-LAWS: Come up with a chapter name and used the templates provided by PanIIT USA to come up with by-laws, logo, and identify key office bearers for the first two years. Submit chapter documentation to PanIIT USA for approval. 6. CREATE WEBSITE & LEVERAGE NESWLETTER, SOCIAL MEDIA: Use the website template provided by PanIIT USA to upload a website on the iit.org site. The site will be hosted by PanIIT USA for the chapter. Use PanIIT USA Newsletter and Social Media 7. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Submit proposal for financial support; grant and loan to launch the chapter. HOW TO TAKE YOUR CHAPTER TO THE NEXT LEVEL: Sometimes a chapter needs a little help to make it to the next level. Here are the six steps recommended by successful chapter leaders from around the country.  CURRENT STATE: When was the chapter formed? How many members do you have? How many emails do you have? PanIIT USA will sync with your database every quarter.  DO YOU HAVE BY-LAWS & ARE YOU REGISTERED? If not, use the PanIIT by-laws tool to create chapter’s bylaws and PanIIT registration tool to register.  OUTREACH: DO YOU HAVE A WEBSITE? IS YOUR WEBSITE CONNECTED TO IIT.ORG? If not, use the PanIIT website tool to create your chapter’s website on iit.org and leverage PanIIT outreach tools like the newsletter and social media.  HOSTING EVENTS Use the PanIIT USA event game plans to maximize the success of your events. The event game plan provides best practices, how to promote the event, event insurance (provided free by PanIIT USA) and list of chapters as mentors who have successfully hosted similar events.  CELEBRATE YOUR CHAPTER Use PanIIT USA tools to include your chapter’s activities in the PanIIT USA monthly newsletter, LinkedIn and website to celebrate your chapter.  NATIONAL CONNECTIVITY Attend the monthly PanIIT USA Chapter call on the 3th Wednesday of a month. Share and celebrate your chapter’s events and learn from the best practices of other chapters. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION: PanIIT USA recommends chapters to have annual alumni awards and recognition. A list of the awards in alignment with PanIIT USA’s awards has been recommended in the website. After your event, please make sure you share the news of celebration, with pictures, with the PanIIT USA newsletter team. BEST PRACTICES FOR HOLDING SUCCESSFUL EVENTS: We interviewed chapter leaders from around the country and had documented some of the best practices. Here is the type of events that have been successful  Leadership Events (Annual Awards Gala, Speaker, Panel Discussion, Networking, Happy Hour, Monthly Business Luncheon)  Give Back Events (Community Services)  Social (Holi, Picnic, Diwali)  Regional Multicity Event (Mini one evening conference)  PanIIT USA recommends, at least, three events every calendar year. As you complete a successful event, take a moment to create a road-map for that event and share it with PanIIT USA. WHAT PANIIT CAN DO FOR YOUR CHAPTER: Here are the value added chapter services: OPERATIONS:  The Chapter Safety Net: PanIIT USA Guarantees to cover the expenses if a pre- approved event runs in a loss.  New Chapter Seed Money/Grant/Loan to support chapter launch activities.  Event Insurance: Offer free event insurance for chapter activities.  Chapter Website: Assist in chapter website page and free hosting on iit.org.  Newsletter: Outreach to alumni using PanIIT USA Newsletter.  Social Media (LinkedIn): Outreach to alumni using PanIIT Social Media solution.  Bylaws guideline, Logo kit, Event Best Practices, Chapter Leadership Awards FUTURE:  Create a Speakers Bureau of prominent alumni who can visit chapters and help attract an audience for events.  Create Infrastructure with national partners what will enable Chapters to run events with more ease.  Event Registration: Identify an event registration partner and consider providing that service to the Chapters.  Event Management: Identify and recommend national event management partner for larger partners.  Contact Management & Email: Identify national vendor and negotiate multiple licenses for chapters.  Resource on the website: This will include logos and a standard template for speaker introductions, contract. 3. CREATE A GOVERNANCE OF DIRECT CHAPTER REPRESENTATION TO THE PANIIT USA BOARD: Chapter presidents will elect a Chapter Representative to the Board. Here are reports by the first two chapter representatives to the Board. PAGE 8 OF 18
  • 9. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT UPDATE FROM CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVES PRATISH KANANI: Chapter Representative 2014 Over the last few years, PanIIT has brought a number of existing chapters closer together, supported chapters with core services, and helped stand-up new chapters. The support provided to the chapters includes the ability to host the chapter information on the PanIIT website, services to help host local events, discounted event registration capabilities, a chapter handbook for operations, and increased interaction between the various chapters. All of these together have meant that the chapters can better provide services to the alumni. PARESH SHAH: Chapter Representative 2015 At the beginning of the year, we had initiated a process to get Chapter Presidents on a monthly call. We had about three calls, and we were able to get some involvement in the Global Conference. The goal for the Board this year was to start two new chapters and assist in reviving others. We are in the process of setting up a Chapter in NJ. We also have the initiative to set up a Chapter in Miami, FL. The Ohio and Michigan Chapter has started gathering a lot of momentum under the leadership of Rajesh Radhakrishnan. The Dallas Chapter ensures that it has one meeting every month at the same location. They have also split the role of the head of the Chapter between a President and Chairman so that there is someone in charge if one person gets busy. The Houston Chapter is successfully working on a give-back initiative by having a Tech Day every quarter to teach school kids coding. Overall, we have tried to get the Chapters to coordinate more with the Board. The process has begun, but a lot more needs to be done. The next year’s conference will be held in Rhode Island under the leadership of IIT AGNE president Raj Laad. The Board has taken initiatives to connect the NY Chapter and the Connecticut Chapter to the Boston Chapter to help. Hemchandra Shertukde of CT and Vinay Karle of NY have taken the initiative to help the AGNE group for the conference. PAGE 9 OF 18
  • 10. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT CHAPTER ACTIVITY UPDATE GREATER HOUSTON: Pratish Kanani The IIT Alumni of Greater Houston, a 501c3 organization, is focused on helping our members connect, develop and give back to the community. This organization was instrumental in hosting the IIT 2013 Global Conference and has continued that success by hosting a number of events over the last two years. Under the connecting pillar, we have two signature events every year, a summer bowling event and a fall picnic event where we provide a platform for the social connection that brings together up to 250 of our members. Other connect events have included a sold-out dinner event hosted with the ex-Captain for the Indian Cricket Team, Ajit Wadekar. On the professional connecting and networking side, we have co-hosted joint networking sessions with the MIT Enterprise Forum in Houston. We have had even more success under the develop pillar. Our Career Insights events hosted jointly with Rice University has allowed us to bring industry experts together to discuss careers in areas such as Exploration & Production, Investment Banking, and Management Consulting. We also mentor students at the University of Houston. Finally, under our give back pillar, we conduct our branded IITAGH /C@deFest// event where we teach middle and high school students how to code a website in a day. The event has been very well received and will now be extended to the 29 campuses of the Houston Community College. These are just some of the events we have hosted. All of this has been made possible by an amazing group of volunteers who are committed and have a strong sense of service and connection with the community. Photos are available on the IITAGH website at www.iitagh.org/news SAN DIEGO: Priyank Saxena A group of 25 IIT Alumni and spouses living in the San Diego area gathered in Royal India Miramar on November 6, 2015, to mingle and meet with PanIIT USA President Arjun Sen. Arjun introduced IITConnect to the guests and briefly spoke about all the activities that PanIIT USA is involved. Everyone was given a chance to introduce themselves. It was wonderful to know each other and their love for IIT family and beautiful city of San Diego. There was an even mix of all ages and enjoyable conversations on various topics - spirituality, finance, policy, and technology. The dinner was sponsored by PanIIT USA was a cherry on the cake. IIT Alumni living in the San Diego area are served by the PanIIT SoCal Chapter, and the San Diego alumni regularly attend the events in Los Angeles. Everyone showed the desire to hold the PanIIT SoCal events in San Diego as well. The members are working on forming a local SoCal sub team, who will take responsibility in building the organization in San Diego and support the events. COLORADO: Abhay Kale On April 12, 2014, PanIIT Colorado chapter hosted members of the PanIIT USA committee. The event attracted about 30 alumni. Given that we estimate about 50 alumni in the Denver area, and the event was organized on short notice, the attendance was quite encouraging. The visiting members, including not so- visiting President Arjun Sen (he is local), shared the initiative taken by this year’s national committee, including the creation of a comprehensive database that will assist the PanIIT members in business as well as personal endeavors. The interaction level between local members and the visitors was intense. Topics of the discussion centered on the database, the Houston meet, future direction and difficulties faced by the smaller PanIIT chapters. The success of the endeavor was evident by the fact that the meeting went well beyond schedule. We hope to organize many such meetings in future to hear from any other alumni passing by Denver. Hopefully, there will be a channel to track and contact such members. CAROLINA: Purnima Gupta We celebrated Dr. Narayan's new achievement: Professor Narayan wins 2014 North Carolina award in science, the highest civilian honor of the state of North Carolina. In the news: How B. Jayant Baliga Transformed Power Semiconductors The 2014 IEEE Medal of Honor recipient pioneered the IGBT, now found in cars, lighting, robots, and more. Activities: We have at least 10 more IITians moved to our area. We have been able to involve more alumni to come up with events of their choice. During 2014-15, we had a regular monthly get-together over a glass of beer. We plan to have one social get- together and one speaker event before the end of the year, by new blood in the area. • 11. PANIIT USA 2015 ANNUAL REPORT NEW ENGLAND: Raj Laad IITSINE, the first IIT alumni chapter, is a 501c6 member organization. IITSINE members, as well as other prominent New England community members, felt that IIT community must play a larger role within the New England community. With that objective, a new organization IITAGNE (IIT Association of Greater New England) was formed in December 2014 and registered as a non-profit 501c3 organization. IITAGNE goals are to:  engage in activities that promote education and research in STEM  provide forums and events that foster exchange of ideas between members and the larger New England community  recognize talent, provide guidance and support career development  assist new members to adjust to local community IITAGNE has been busy planning for 2016 Leadership Conference to be held on August 12-14, 2016 in Rhode Island Convention Center, Providence, RI. Over 50 volunteers have been meeting earnestly 2-3 times a month in smaller teams to present a great conference. Please mark your calendars. We invite you to participate in the organization; know that it is an event of and for all IITians. Following is a summary of events held during the 2014-2015 term.  Annual Gala Dinner: April 2014  Current state and opportunities in real estate: June 2014  Annual Picnic: August 2014  Fall Social: September 2014  Entrepreneurship Conclave: September 2014  Diwali Celebration: October 2014  Annual Picnic: August 2015  Welcome New Students: November 2015  Entrepreneurship and career opportunities in Healthcare: November 2015 PHOENIX: Karan Syal The Phoenix Chapter kick-started in late 2014 with a bunch of ASU students, who brain-stormed ways to connect more formally to alumni in Arizona. We started with a small informal lunch at a favorite Indian place “Chutneys” and was attended by over 30 alumni who came from far and across in Arizona. The lunch was very well received, and it was great to see alumni sharing stories from “back in the days”! Building on the momentum, the initial team of ASU students reached out to more alumni and the chapter team was setup with the involvement of a few senior alumni and their spouses in the mix. Further, the 8- member team is divided into individual committees from finance, events, networking with 2-3 members each who support each other in these activities. The chapter team has met with Mr. Arjun Sen, PanIIT USA President, on two separate occasions and we have holistically incorporated his kind advice into our day-to-day functioning. The team added another feather to its success when they organized another alumni picnic in the valley over the summer of 2015. This meet was attended by over 50-60 alumni with their spouses making it a grand event with over 80 attendees. As with the past event, this was received with great success and many more senior alumni offered help to take the chapter forward. The chapter team hopes to build on this foundation and take the chapter forward more comprehensively. Already events such as “Fundae session” in collaboration with ASU student organizations as well as Happy hours are being planned for the fall holiday season. CONNECTICUT: Hemchandra Shertukde (Sher) CT PANIIT Chapter was formed in December of 2014 with an initial membership of five, which slowly rose to 30 by mid-January of 2015. We were to hold a function end of December 27th of 2014, but it did not materialize since most members were out of town. NORTHERN TEXAS: Samir Bhargava IIT Alumni Association of North Texas (IITNT) had regrouped earlier in the year with the intent to increase association activities and make it more relevant for the Alumni in the region. In the past 7 months, we have started the regular monthly events for Happy Hour and started Lunch Speaker series. The focus for Lunch Speaker series is to bring speakers for technical or social issues relevant to a large segment of our Alumni in the region. Last month we had our annual picnic which was attended by about 100 people representing all the legacy IITs and graduating batches ranging from 1966 to 2011. The attendance underlined the need for the Alumni association and the work we have started on. We look forward to increasing our activities next year with more participation from the Alumni. • 12. IITCONNECT - PANIIT USA DATABASE: AN UPDATE BY SKY BASU In 2014, a group of IITians with the new leadership of Arjun Sen started the PanIIT alumni database project. In the past, there were multiple efforts for the same without success. The database team took a two- phase approach with some reasonable goals for each phase. They were: Short Term (6 months to 1 year)  Start Populating Database with Updated Quality Content  Implement Registration and Edit Pages for Alumni Profiles  Implement Basic Search Capability  Implement Communication between Alumni Capability Long Term (1 to 2 years)  Implement Mass Email Messages Specific for Campus, Chapters Feature  Implement Integration/ Synchronization with social media – LinkedIn  Implement Synchronization with Campus Databases Based on the past experience the team decided that a custom development would not be an option due to the high risk, high cost and high involvement requirements. The search for vendors will be limited to those who have a SaaS solution. The team developed a detailed requirements list to identify vendors. With active participation from various team members, an initial short list was made and then a final selection. The winner was ‘Yourmembership.com’. While the team’s primary criteria were aligned to the Database requirements, the selected service offered additional features of mass mailing and conference registration including payment processing which allowed PanIIT to consolidate services to a single vendor and reduce complexity and cost. That was nice! After the official inauguration of the Database in July this year at the PanIIT conference in Bay area, today the registered membership in the database grew to 29,387! Though this is the single largest PanIIT database in the world, we are still missing many IIT alumni in the USA. The team hopes eventually this will become the single definitive global database for all alumni from all campuses of past, present, and future. It is easy to say that the success of the database project was due to the diligence, hard work and leadership of team members, but there were a few more factors, which also worked well. They are:  A very well defined goal at the beginning and a process to follow. The PanIIT president Arjun Sen and Vice President (President elect for 2016) Witty Bindra clearly deserve the kudos for that.  Some of the young and energetic team members working hard to make it possible. One person, I should mention specifically is Clint McCaskill who helped in the process at every step.  The support/ service team of Yourmembership.com, which patiently implemented all the requirements to make the service intuitive and useful.  Finally, the support of the Board of PanIIT, the USA who has shown the trust and faith in the database team to make decisions and move forward at various stages. PANIIT WOMEN’S DATABASE PanIIT USA Executive Team is very proud of this accomplishment. This started as a dream and very quickly went from idea to plan to implementation phase. The passionate leadership of Mandy Pant and Ranjani Saigal blended with effective outreach by the communication team lead by Priyank Saxena resulted in rapid launch of the database. The Bay Area chapter took this to the next level where they hosted the first IIT Alumni Women’s day to launch the 2015 conference. This will be a very powerful leadership group within PanIIT USA and we expect big things from the group in future. PAGE 12 OF 18
  • 13. PANIIT COMMUNICATIONS: AN UPDATE BY PRIYANK SAXENA The PanIIT USA Team: Arjun Sen, Priyank Saxena, Karan Sayal, Clint McCaskill, Mandy Pant, Ranjani Saigal, Ashish Kumar, Ravi Bollina, Anvita Bajpai The PanIIT Communication team began our term under the leadership of Arjun Sen in January 2014 with the theme of "Building the Bridges". In today's world, communication technology is that bridge that connects the alumni not only in their cities but also across the states and countries. For the Communication Team, the mission was to provide the IIT Alumni as many technology tools as possible to connect with each other. In the last two years, we are proud to say that we provided a brand new iit.org website, vibrant LinkedIn Social Media Group, content rich newsletters, and a user friendly database IITConnect to reach out to fellow alumni. Also, the Communication Team was always ready to assist the alumni at the short notice, whether it was an urgent communication or fund raising or promoting alumni conferences and other chapter events. List of accomplishments: 1. Website: A brand new website that provides a one-stop shop to provide access to PanIIT USA Board members, US alumni chapters, and their representative, Campus organizations, past conferences, newsletter archives and news items and upcoming events. Historically PanIIT had built websites, but the challenge has been keeping it updated. The current website was built with one clear focus; it can be updated by simple “copy, paste and save.” For each chapter, the content was developed after interviewing chapter members. Chapter members simply wanted to find out the following: a. Is there an active chapter near me? Putting current chapter events on the website makes members realize that there is a chapter nearby. b. Whom should I contact? A picture of the chapter president and his/her contact information makes it easy for alumni to contact chapter members. c. When is the next event? This information gives a member a reason to connect with the chapter. Recently, we have integrated the IITConnect database that facilitates alumni to alumni connections at the individual level. A website design and security policy was developed by the communication team. The website is updated weekly. 2. Social Media: The IIT Alumni LinkedIn Group is the official social media group of PanIIT USA. It has 28500+ IIT alumni from around the world. The LinkedIn team has put a lot of effort in deleting the non-alumni members and making the group spam free. The joining requests are approved only after a thorough check of individual profiles according to the policy developed by the team. Due to the active management, the traffic on discussion and jobs pages have greatly increased; by 100%. Per the request of the alumni, several special interest subgroups were created based on geographical region and professional interests. For the first time, IIT Women alumni under the leadership of Ranjani Saigal and Mandy Pant was created. The group is 850+ members strong and it engages the women alumni in providing tools for their professional growth. In addition to LinkedIn, the local chapters and campuses use Facebook and WhatsApp groups to promote their events and establish alumni to alumni connections. A PanIIT Twitter account was used to communicate key PanIIT conference message to IIT alumni. 3. Newsletter: Newsletter team comprising of a creative cell, published 18 newsletters in the last two years, which are archived at the iit.org website. With the outreach to more than 30K alumni living in the USA, the newsletter provided a platform: a. for the campus organizations to write articles about the history and accomplishments, b. to fellow alumni to share their wisdom with us on Guru Funda and Insights columns c. to creative writers to share their memories from the campus activities on Nostalgia column. d. to authors to speak about their books and articles e. to Alumni Chapters in the USA to showcase their events and publicize their upcoming events f. and finally, news articles in the media about the IIT campuses and IIT Alumni accomplishments. 4. IIT Connect: The IIT Connect database was created by the Database Team. Communication Team provided all the tactical support and infrastructure in bringing the product to fruition. The database is hosted on the iit.org website. A lot of hours were spent by the team in writing a security policy to ensure the safety of the database. In the years 2014 and 2015, this team has done their part in building the infrastructure - the Bridges. The challenge for the next team will be to how to make the alumni take their first steps in crossing those bridges. I am sure once one has taken the first step on these bridges, it is going to be a rewarding experience and life-long relationship with an amazing community - called IIT Alumni. As a volunteer, it was a rewarding experience for me to work with a team of highly energetic volunteers who are 100% dedicated to the cause of IIT Alumni. I want to thank each and every one in my team for their full commitment and can-do attitude, because of which we never doubted our abilities in setting the big goals and accomplishing them. I cherish all the learning and relationships I gained along the way. PAGE 13 OF 18
  • 14. ALUMNI SERVICES VISION BY J.V. MAGANTI With more than 60 thousand alumni from India in the USA, PanIIT is one of the most dynamic and active alumni organizations in the USA, boasting prominent and highly accomplished luminaries in academia, technology, finance, and entrepreneurship. Offering Alumni Services, primarily educational and networking opportunities, is the key to attracting and retaining membership. As part of our educational outreach, PanIIT hosts its flagship “Global Conference” organized biennially in the USA for four days with a number of presentations on varying topics. In addition, most chapters organize educational seminars or day-long conferences for their members. DIRECTORY SERVICES The PanIIT Website is the face of the organization, and all of the alumni services are provided through this interface. The Directory Service is one of the most useful alumni services and number one reason that brings alumni to the website. With a lot of effort on the part of the database team, a robust database of the backend (clean and verified data for over 30 thousand alumni), and a user-friendly interface on the frontend has been finally launched this year. We currently provide directory services with simple search options. We provided much publicity and promotion of the alumni database and its value through PanIIT emails over the last few months as well as through distribution of bookmarks at the recently held annual conference at Santa Clara. With the strong database in place now, there are many potential opportunities to leverage this infrastructure to provide enhanced directory services. As part of our future enhancements, we envision the ability to search and locate alumni based on specific criteria –mentor/mentee, investor/entrepreneur, collaborators, employer/employee (job boards), etc. MERCHANDIZE SERVICES To create PanIIT pride and a sense of loyalty towards respective campuses, we realized there is a huge potential for merchandise sales with IIT-insignia (T-Shirts, Hats, Coffee Mugs, Water Bottles, Coat Pins, Travel Gear - backpacks and other smaller items) with either PanIIT exclusive logos or the PanIIT logo in combination with a specific IIT campus logo, depending on the volume of interest. We are currently working on sourcing vendors to undertake this initiative. BUSINESS SERVICES There is good potential to provide the following personalized services to alumni in a cost-effective manner.  Life Insurance plans and products  Financial Planning & Services  Advertisements on the PanIIT website, Newsletters, Conference Brochures  Funding opportunities: Connecting entrepreneurs and investors We have made contacts with several companies (AnyPerk.com, Beyondwork.com, Passportunlimited.com, etc.) and have had extensive discussions. However, we still have not determined any vendors that will suit our needs. As PanIIT is a not-for-profit and without a membership fee, we find it difficult to initiate these services as most of the vendors require upfront and ongoing revenue to provide their services. We are currently exploring alternatives – providing advertising space on our website and/or broadcasting their services to our members. TRAVEL SERVICES We plan to create and promote tour packages by travel agencies exclusively designed for IIT Alumni. This seems to be one of the most promising revenue-generating services we can create for alumni. We plan to create surveys to capture Alumni interest on the types of tours they are interested in cultural, historical, archeological, domestic international, duration of tours, price points, interest in joining other alumni at same age- group/interests/batch mates/same campus, etc.). We aim to find vendors to provide these travel services at rates far less expensively than alumni would be able to find on their own. We have made contacts with the University of Michigan Alumni Services Travel department as they have an excellent and very successful travel program specifically catering to alumni and their families. The tours are primarily run by faculty (subject matter experts for each of the tours). We have gathered their brochures and tour operators’ information. We are in the process of contacting the tour operators to have detailed discussions on the packages they offer and hope to soon develop a comprehensive travel services program for PanIIT USA for 2016. • 15. PANIIT BRANDING By now you must be wondering, if we forgot to work on Branding. No, we did not. One of the defining moments for PanIIT Branding was the 60 minute episode on IIT. Since then quite a few times we have tried to create 60 minutes part 2. But when we reflected on the branding needs of the day, we came up with the following conclusions: 1. In the last 10 years, the world has changed. The median age of 60 minute viewers is nearly 60 years. Social media has taken over and instead of us trying to tell the news, we need to discover content about us that is content worthy. 2. The 60 minutes episode was based on IIT JEE being the world’s toughest exam. We can go and own that again but the group felt that we want to own instead the accomplishments of IITians in this country. As we started thinking more about branding IITian’s accomplishments, I personally did three things: 1. Went through the LinkedIn profiles of some of the prominent alumni. IIT campus and IIT news was in quite a few cases hidden in the profile. 2. Watched media interviews of prominent alumni and again in most cases there was no mention of IIT in their interview. 3. Finally I surveyed a group of 100 alumni of different ages and asked them three questions. How do you celebrate IIT when you are talking to your buddy from IIT? How would you describe IIT and IITians when your write an article and finally how would you describe IITians when you are answering questions to a group of media. There was a clear consensus among the alumni answers. Here are the answers to the questions. a. When talking to your buddy from IIT: “We are the best.” “We are the cream of the nation.” b. When writing an article about IITians: “We can do anything.” We have made an impact in every field you can imagine.” c. When facing a group of live media: “We are the best because we all went through the world’s toughest exam.” As I reflected on the survey responses, I realized that for any reputed University in USA, the power of networking starts after one graduates from the university. That is the defining factor for an Ivy League school. For us the defining moment is the entry point. Based on this it was very clear that we need to first market to our own alumni first, show them the power of being an alumni in this country. Hence we started the database project where we want to connect every alumni with each other. We strongly believe that each of us can gain significantly from the connection to 60,000 other alumni in the country. Once that is in place, then we can further strengthen the “IITIAN PRIDE” by sharing stories of IITian contributions first to the group. Then we will be ready to launch a national initiative to talk about why we are IITians are the best. It is then the message will be so powerful that the next morning, when you walk into a meeting, your colleagues will say, “Did you not go to that University that everyone is talking about? Truly impressive, the magnitude of contribution from your alumni!” Of course you will then feel the true power of the brand, as a confident smile will break in your lips. So, please join the database, “Get to know” each other, “Help” each other and feel the power of the IITian group in this country. And I assure you that the 2016-17 team has big plans on the branding, building on the internal branding work the 2014-15 team has accomplished. In the next page I will share with you a profile of IITians in the country; that will demonstrate to you the elite group you are part of. PAGE 15 OF 18

  • 17. PANIIT CONFERENCE UPDATE 2015 SANTA CLARA GLC CONFERENCE BY SUBHASH TANTRY The recent IIT Global Leadership Conference 2015 from July 23-25 in the San Francisco Bay Area, like other PanIIT USA Conferences in the past, has been a great conference experience that matched its slogan: The Internet of People. The Conference brought together the brightest minds to learn from and collaborate with to help us grow in our own way. We had more than 2000 registrants, with 130+ fascinating and thought provoking speakers and panelists with magnanimous contributions by Sponsors and 8 Distinguished Alumni of the IITs. It also added to the coffers of the PanIIT movement in the US as well! What distinguishes these conferences is the IIT spirit that we exude. IITians are a unique group of people. We are passionate about things we like to do. We try to do better than our best, and in the process, we do well by others. Wherever we go, we seek to create a virtuous circle, representing the theme of this conference by innovating, inspiring, achieving and giving back. The IIT spirit came through from the more than 100 IIT volunteers including their spouses who worked hard, inspired their teams, and innovated along the way (including the creation of a unique location sensitive mobile app for the Conference) thereby achieving a Conference that was much appreciated. It was their way of giving back to their alma mater in kind with a drive to excel that we can all be proud of. All in all, it was a blast being a volunteer cherishing every moment of it! Subhash Tantry, Chair IITGLC 2015 2016 BOSTON LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE BY RAJ LAAD The 21st century is witness to accelerating change across economies and beyond political boundaries. With growing populations, global climatic changes, and resource limitations the challenges seem daunting. In the past human ingenuity has delivered a constant stream of innovations to address such issues. What will tomorrow bring? New England is host to world class thought leaders and game- changing innovations that address these challenges and can dramatically transform the future. • 18. WORDS FROM CAMPUS REPRESENTATIVES TO THE PANIIT USA BOARD IIT BHU, MANU GOYAL As the tenure of the PANIIT USA Board comes to an end in 2015, it is time for a reflection on the achievements of this Board. The current Board made efforts to establish processes and best practices in terms of governance, define the roles of the Executive Committee members, create the infrastructure to bring the alumni base together, as a platform from which the next level of activities can be launched. Among other things, the efforts to secure the intellectual property by trademarking the name “Indian Institute of Technology”, “PANIIT USA”, and the logo will go a long way to help the incoming leadership in future years. Laying down corporate governance procedures and clarity in the roles and responsibilities of the various members of the executive committee would provide the foundation for the continued efforts in that direction. By creating the database and website for the alumni, now a platform has been provided, to launch activities that are directly related to the organization’s objectives of “Brand Building” and “Alumni Services.” In summary, the work of this board should be viewed as the foundation upon which the organization will be built in the future. Overall, an excellent job by the Executive Committee and the PANIIT USA Board in this term. Best wishes to the incoming team to take the mission of the organization further. GUWAHATI CHAPTER, KIRAN THOTA PanIIT USA has been a work in progress since its inception. We had a great set of programs and efforts catering the Alumni early on. As IITs grew, so did membership and the officers. However, the efforts didn’t always scale. Mission creep, frequent change of guard, lack of clear role descriptions and accountability have hindered the prospects of PanIIT as a growing organization. After the 2005 overhaul of PanIIT USA (organization structure), this is the first time we have revisited the organization structure and fixed the gaps. The governance team led by Sundi had gathered inputs from all parties and defined the 1. Roles, responsibilities 2. Election procedures 3. Tenure 4. Ethics, compliance and conflict of interest for various elected members. The rules of engagement between the various members have been well- addressed for smooth operations and the mission better interpreted. Having served with PanIIT for over 12 years, I consider 2015 as a key milestone in achieving the growth planned for the future. Having built a strong foundation, I am confident PanIIT USA can achieve the set goals effectively. IIT ROORKEE, ANOOP VERMA PANIIT evolved further as a structured organization under the leadership of the executive committee led by Arjun Sen. Arjun, and his team were instrumental in ensuring that all campuses were engaged and participated to take the movement to the next level. Expanding the volunteer base and involving the local chapters helped the board in broadening the appeal of the engaging in alumni affairs for alumni across the board. It helped in establishing the true national character of the community. Supporting teams in executing difficult initiatives resulted in huge successes with global conference and initiatives such as the global directory. As board members and on behalf of the Roorkee campus alumni, we are proud of being a part of these accomplishments and thank everyone on the board and the executive committee for a productive tenure.
