14. MAINT.& REPAIR WEEK 1
LO1.1: Explain the purpose of
maintenance.
Topic 1 Purpose of Maintenance
15. . What is PMS
. What is the purpose and
importance of PMS
• YouTube( May 09, 2018, Vessel Maintenance, retrieved January 12,
2020 from
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHPuPh0DYmo
16. • PMS(Planned Maintenance System)-a
planned maintenance system allows
shipowners and operators to plan,
perform and document vessel
maintenance at intervals complying with
class and manufacturer requirements.
• The objective is to ensure safe and
reliable vessel operations,including
equipment,in addition to compliance
with all applicable regulations
17. • The purpose of the shipboard planned maintenance
system (PMS) is:
• To ensure that all maintenance is carried out with
adequate intervals and under the planned
maintenance system's schedule.
• To maintain and keep all engines, machinery, and
technical components in good working order at all
times, avoid stoppages and maintain charter party
speed and consumption requirements.
• To avoid interruption and oversight of work by
covering all of the work.
• To make clear demarcation between onboard and
shore maintenance work.
18. • A planned maintenance system on ships is
mandatory according to the International
Safety Management Code (ISM). An
effective planned maintenance system not
only helps meet safety and environmental
objectives laid out in the ISM Code, it is also
an investment in the protection of the
assets and optimization of their
management.
19. • How To Use
• The "Planned Maintenance System" shall be under the supervision of the
"Onboard Management & Maintenance Committee."
• The Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, or First Engineer shall record the
maintenance and inspection results.
• The completed Data of "Planned Maintenance System" of both deck
department and engine department shall be approved by chief officer
and chief engineer respectively then checked by the Master, and
submitted to the Technical Superintendent in charge accompanied with
the vessel's comments for improvements every month.
• The Technical Superintendent in charge shall ensure that the "Planned
Maintenance System" is working in order and shall respond to the
vessel's comments with relevant instructions.
• The maintenance intervals of each article in the system can be adjusted
when necessary; the vessel shall request the Technical Superintendent in
charge of the established form.
• Composition of “Planned Maintenance System”: The system is
composed of the deck department and engine department. The deck
department covers cargo related, radio-related, and catering related
equipment.
20. With ShipManager Technical PMS software you can benefit from:
• Optimization of vessel maintenance management
• Central management of your fleetwide equipment and maintenance jobs
• Provide all information for powerful, fleetwide management reporting via ShipManager Analyzer
• Easy-to-use common user interface between ship and shore, improving communication
• Prepare and document all planned and unplanned maintenance tasks
• Define and schedule counter-/calendar-based and condition-based tasks
• Categorize jobs and elements according to relevant criteria, such as critical, safety relevant, class
relevant or origin
• Keep an automatic update of stock counts in consideration of spare parts consumed for maintenance
tasks
• Keep lifecycle records of each equipment
• Defect management
• Exchange equipment for maintenance and overhaul without losing relevant information
• Have central task lists for onboard engineers and technical office staff
• Integrate with other ShipManager software modules
• DNV GL's implementation team with extensive ship management expertise
