The document discusses apartment rentals in Costa Dorada near the archaeological site of Tarraco in Spain. Tarraco was an important Roman city and capital of the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis. Many Roman ruins remain today, including the well-preserved Roman walls that surrounded the city. Tarraco was a major urban center with military and residential areas, and Romans influenced much of the Iberian Peninsula from this city due to its advanced culture. Today, visitors can see remaining structures like the amphitheater that show Tarraco's historical significance during the Roman Empire.
1. Apartment rentals in Costa Dorada: The Roman Tarraco
Unesco declared the archaeological site of Tarraco a World Heritage Site in 2000. Also it was
voted to be one of the “Seven Wonders of Catalonia”, and that is not surprising if you have
chosen your apartment rental in Costa Dorada. The beautiful beaches of Tarragona are the
top destinations in Catalonia for worldwide travelers.
If there is something that distinguishes Tarragona from other capitals is its Roman heritage.
During the Roman Empire, it was one of the major cities of the Iberian Peninsula and capital
of the Roman province called Hispania Citerior or Hispania Tarraconensis. Its full name (while
the Roman Republic was taking place) was Colonia Iulia Urbs Triumphalis Tarraco.
Tarraco stems from the arrival of the Roman army to the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC, under
military confrontation for control of the Mediterranean Sea between Romans and
Carthaginians, known as the Second Punic War.
The Republican city of Tarraco was a dual core at that time, meaning that there was a military
camp in the north and a residential area in the South, where the harbor was located. Romans
influenced the rest of the Iberian Peninsula due to its advance culture. Throughout the years,
this influence was spread throughout the Peninsula.
One of the main infrastructures that Romans built was the harbor. Nevertheless, the oldest
and bestpreserved monument is the Roman wall that surrounded the entire city of Tarraco at
the time. (You can’t miss both tourist attractions if you book your apartment rental in Costa
Dorada).
At first, the Roman wall consisted of a simple wooden fence that protected the military
garrison. The Roman victory over the Carthaginians and the beginning of the Roman state,
Hispania, speed up the construction of a larger defense. Between 150 and 125 BC the wall
underwent a big change: it had an increase in size, height and width. Then it started to
surround also the urban core. Tarraco grew very fast during the second and first centuries
BC, and became, along with Cartago one of the largest cities in Hispania Criterior. It was
then, where Caesar’s legacy took place during the civil war against Pompey. The reason for
this was the loyalty shown by Tarraco. Then, Caesar granted the city the title of colony.
The archaeological ensemble of Tarraco is one of the largest archaeological sites of Roman
Hispania preserved in Spain today. There are still many important Roman ruins in Tarragona
that can be visited all year around. Parts of the foundations of the large Cyclopean walls near
the Pilate’s offices are believed to be from preRoman origins. This building, which was a
prison in the 19th century, is said to be the palace of Augustus.
2. Tarraco, like many ancient cities, has remained inhabited, and has been slowly dismantled by
its own citizens. In spite of this fact, the amphitheater, has survived throughout the centuries.
