It gives me pleasure to write this letter of reference for Anyudan (Nemo) Zhao. Since registering
to participate in this program in January, Nemo has shown great enthusiasm and initiative for
self-directed learning, and for sharing her enthusiasm and organizational skills with other
students.
Because the Academic English Support Program does not run in the summer months, Nemo
volunteered, along with some other students, to run and take turns leading the program’s
discussion groups over the summer. This involved coordinating with other students, setting up
and maintaining a space on social media for communication, and helping to update an online
document outlining that week’s theme for discussion. These discussions were a great success
and students reported that they gained confidence in the weekly entirely student-led meetings,
in which Nemo played a big role.
In addition, when the Program re-started in the Fall, Nemo volunteered to share her
experiences of how she participated in the program at several large group orientations for
students new to UBC, in order that they could learn first-hand about the different types of
customised support the program offers students. Nemo did a wonderful job of personalizing
her experiences, which we all appreciated as it helped students new to the program see what
was possible.
I have no hesitation in recommending Nemo to you. I wish her all the best in her future
endeavours.
