The document compares and contrasts the French Revolution and the Revolt of 1857 in India. The French Revolution was against the French king and started by civilians dissatisfied with high prices and taxation. It led to the establishment of a republic and democracy. In contrast, the Revolt of 1857 was against British colonial rule and initiated by Indian soldiers. While the French middle class supported the revolution, Indian intellectuals at the time did not broadly support the revolt against the British. Both events however aimed to gain freedom from oppressive rulers and saw participation from civilians including women.
