The company operates in South Africa and throughout Africa, with a vision to become a leading global provider. NERM's services include substation protection, automation, design, metering, cable fault location, and sales of specialized testing equipment.
2. Company Overview
The line of work that the founders did before NERM, involved travelling to various countries in Africa.
They turned their hard work into a key mo vator and driving force behind their hunger to form a company of their own.
NERM Applica ons and Tes ng (Pty) Ltd was established in 2012, and is a full B-BBEE compliant company with offices in
Western Cape & Gauteng, South Africa.
The objec ve of the company is to provide the best service in the Power Systems Engineering Industry.
These services are applied in the SADC region and expanding throughout Africa with future expansion to go Global.
Our engineers have worked extensively in different African countries including numerous projects throughout South Africa.
Each of our engineers have very good reputa ons and rela onships in Africa and Southern Africa.
With this in mind we aim at providing value added services to our clients, allowing them to achieve the bo6om line benefits
of their core business.

3. Protection & Automation
Primary and Secondary Plant Design and Commissioning:
The commissioning of large central plants requires a thorough
understanding of the new technologies that enable a facility to
achieve op mum energy efficiency. Primary Integra on has
provided commissioning services for substa ons. Our in-house
Subject Ma6er Experts (SMEs) have in-depth experience with the
design and programming of relays and PLC, SCADA and digital
controls, and exper se in the applica on and integra on of these
technologies into the opera on of large central plants.
This includes SAT and FAT (Site and Factory Acceptance Tes ng).
Upgrades/Retrofits/Modifications
Retrofi;ng refers to the addi on of new technology or
features to older systems. Power plant retrofit includes
changing of old electro mechanical relays to IEDs
improving power plant efficiency / increasing output /
reducing emissions.
Metering and SCADA Systems
Nerm Applica ons and Tes ng specialises with sta s cal, tariff
metering and power quality management systems for all
substa ons and factories. We also offer automa on and SCADA
systems for all substa ons and factories (61850).
Sub-Station Maintenance and Fault Analysis
This involves the inspec on of various equipment, cleaning of
insula ng members and the appropriate tes ng of various devices
to ensure good quality, durability and most importantly, safety and
preven ng unnecessary outages.
The main focus areas are:
• Substa on maintenance
• Fault analysis
• Stand by
• Technical support
• Audits and tes ng
4. Cable Fault Location
Cable fault loca on is the process of loca ng periodic faults, such as insula on faults in underground cables, and is an
applica on of electrical measurement systems. In this process, mobile shock discharge generators are among the devices used.
Cable faults are damage to cables which effect a resistance in the cable. If allowed to persist, this can lead to a voltage break-
down. There are different types of cable faults, which must first be classified before they can be located. The insula on of the
cable plays a significant role in this. While paper-impregnated cables are par cularly suscep ble to external chemical and
thermal influences, in high-voltage PE or XLPE cables the polyethylene insula on of the conductor is affected, leading to par al
breakdowns and cracks that “eat away” the insula on.
To locate a fault in the cable, the cable must first be tested for faults. Cable tes ng is therefore usually performed first in cable
fault loca on. During the cable test, flash-overs are generated at the weak points in the cable, which can then be localised.
• Screening faults: A contact between conductor and screen generates a varying resistance.
• Phase faults: The contact between mul ple conductors generates a varying resistance.
• Sheath faults: Sheath faults are damage of the cable sheath that allows the surroundings contact with the cable screen.
• Faults due to moisture: Water penetrates into the cable sheath and contacts the conductors. Impedance changes at the
fault loca on make measuring more difficult. The resistance usually lies in the low-ohmic range.
• Disrup ons: Combina on of series and parallel resistances, usually in the form of a wire break. The voltage is
interrupted, i.e. Ω=∞ .
