Najee Rodriguez: we will now be moving into open student forum. If so, please raise your hand
and I will call on you OK see you know students here for open student forum we will now hear
or report by president boas president bows you may begin whenever you're ready.
Erin Boas: hello! I hope you all are having a fantastic summer and taking advantage of some
time to relax and causing greatness in your internships I know I'm taking advantage of the time
to catch up on books and movies that I couldn't get to during the year I don't know how we're
already the end of July but I couldn't be more excited for the months of head especially to see
you all I've loved being able to hit the ground running and engaged in many meetings over the
past few months for the sake of time I'm not going to run down every item for my report but you
can see the exhaustive list attached to the agenda and as always feel free to reach out to me with
any questions I am going to run through some of the bigger updates though I’ve greatly enjoyed
continuing to serve on the presidential recruitment and selection committee and will continue in
this capacity into the fall. Vice president Rodriguez, chief of staff Jordan and I have been
focusing largely on the executive branch, but I want to say welcome and congratulations to all of
the new directors I believe there's only one or two more vacant spots so it's exciting to finally
have some full departments and also best of luck to all of those that are getting confirmed tonight
major thank you to the leadership team for the time and thoughtfulness dedicated to the many
hours of interviews it's been great being able to hang out with you all throughout the process and
especially our funny stories and stretch breaks in between as I mentioned in my organization
wide email on July 9th we are currently in the middle of the branding and website overhaul
project led by grace southern he's the acting director of communications you'll see here later on
the agenda and Michael Miller we were able to present the current state of the project to both
steering and cabinet this week and I'm confident that will be able to accomplish the overall goal
of making you pay more accessible personable and understandable vice president Rodriguez and
I partook in the July board of trustees cycle from July 13th to 15th I'm excited to serve on the
finance business and capital planning committee this year and our meeting with student
government executives and board leadership we focused on COVID precautions 88 compliance.
Poverty and a recommitment to the it's on us campaign pledge to combat campus sexual assault
as the fall semester is approaching it's imperative that we all stay diligent and responsible in our
actions the pandemic is not over in the delta variant provides a great threat to the community we
will stay vigilant of the new guidelines as they come out under planning to ambush our advocacy
efforts as well as our messaging to students I cannot stress enough how important it is to
encourage fellow students to upload their vaccination records to my UHS it is so simple and does
wonders for easing concerns about the status of vaccination rates for the year one of the easiest
ways you can encourage students is by sending in your 15 to 32nd videos for the we are
vaccinated video I've only gotten one UPUA response so far I would love to see more finally
your mental and physical health is by far the highest priority as well if you have any concerns
questions stresses things are excited about things you're worried about or just want to hang out
and catch up please reach out I'm never too busy for you all and I cannot wait to hopefully see
you all soon with that I will now stand for questions
Najee Rodriguez: thank you president Boas, are there any questions for president boas? Seeing
none, we will now move into my report. Summer it is great to see you all I can't wait to begin
this year once we see each other in early September perhaps in person depending on what the
university decides the best course of action I just have a few quick reports that I wanted to get
through with everyone and I promise it will be quick first of all please be sure to look at the
calendar link that I sent in our general UPUA group me if you have any questions about modern
rules for assembly procedure especially as we get into the school year and potentially in person
assemblies it will be vital that I act as a resource to help guide you through that we do have our
trusting modern rules both that must be the lies to ensure an efficient meeting and there are other
nice areas of expertise that we also have to go through once we actually begin in person
assembly such as standing up when you have a question or would like to partake in discussion
very important to consider I hope you enjoyed that real life and action I also want to keep
everyone in the loop about the Wellness fund which has been in the works for a year it is finally
in the final stages and chair Browne and chair Kallur are updated on where we are asked with
UHS is now planning to fund every service that they have from on file within their billing
department meaning this is much bigger than the physicals that we were once talking about last
assembly this is everything that they could possibly be billed for if students lack insurance or
have high copays and deductibles that they simply cannot pay so that's very exciting to see
coming to fruition if you want to meet at any time please text me I'm currently in State College
so if you have further questions about modern rules or assembly procedure or if you just want to
catch up please text me and I'd be more than happy to see you slashing you on my lunch break
from 12 to one or after 5:00 PM at the end of my work day being said I will now stand for
questions and just please be aware there's more detail in my report that was sent to you all but I
wanted to give a quick rundown are there any questions for myself if so please raise your hand
and I will call on you. Seeing none, we will now move into liaison and affiliate reports. Seeing
none, we will move into a five minute caucus breakout… please be aware to change your
pronouns if you haven't already if you have the longer name please do so after the beginning of
your first name and also please be sure to have your camera on if you possibly can that would be
much appreciated alright and we will now move into line item a which is the confirmation of
associate justice since Andrew Waldman Christine Gonzales Lawrence Corridoni and Yash Patni
will be going in order from the name all of you will have a combined 5 minutes to speak
consecutively about your qualifications and your interest in the role and then we'll also have 10
minutes for all of you afterwards and we will be going in sequential order please be sure to raise
your hands if you are not already a panelist and we can go ahead and upgrade you.
Andrew Waldman: and I'm very happy to be here today in front of all of you as you can see my
name is Andrew Waldman last year I served as the first that I'm aware of judicial board clerk
under Chief Justice Schuchman and also Chief Justice Zaia in the spring and currently I'm a
rising sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering I'm involved in mock trial on their exact
board as judging an alumni coordinator and then also working on the moot court team as well I
don't really have a whole lot else so I'm more than happy to take any and all questions that you
have for me today.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you we will now move to nominee Christine Gonzales.
Christine Gonzales: first I like to apologize about my setting I'm actually on the road trip to State
College but yes so excitement so hi everyone First off I would like to thank president bows and
Chief Justice CEO for nominating me as one of the associates for the 16th assembly my name is
Christine and all is I'm a rising senior studying political science and minoring in ethics on
campus I am a member of the women's empowerment roundtable by AD empowering women in
law and I am currently vice president of publications organization at school during my college
career I have also completed internships with the board game project and congressman Cisneros
2020 congressional campaign after I graduated from temple the experience I had been UPUA
was when I acted out as director of social media during the 15th assembly the position allowed
many can experience with the new UPUA internally and learn the importance each person
carried within the 15th assembly the experience helped me strengthen my communication
leadership and average skills now being nominated as associate justice I'm hoping to become
more involved with the UPUA director of social media allowed me to fully understand what the
association is all about and what this information I'd like to apply this to the role I believe I carry
diversity of opinions that will help strengthen the judicial court they may experience in school
organizations and internships I want to understand the importance of diversity and fairness if
confirmed I plan to apply this way of thinking into my decisions justice and equity carries major
significance within the traditional board where I guarantee it will follow that principle as well to
define justice and equity of my own words the two are in established relationship where they
affect one another and ensuring all individuals to same level treatment opportunities and
advancement justice of the guarantee of equality while equity determines the level of treatment
to be confirmed into the road with socio justice would mean a great deal to me I have the skills
and qualifications that established my trustworthiness and dedication I promise to hold truth to
my burden sure the ethics needed for successful judicial word all I would like is a chance to
prove it thank you and I hope everyone had many great summer.
Najee Rodriquez: Thank you Christine, we will now move onto Lawrence Corridoni.
Lawrence Corridoni: thank you everyone I first want to thank anyone who had any input in
helping to nominate me my name is Lawrence or you call me Larry cordonia I'm a rising junior
I'm a mechanical engineering major I did the 2 + 2 program so I was previously at Penn State
Wilkes bare where I was the president of the student government association and I think that's
my primary qualification for the job and there were a pretty small campus so I believe we're the
second smallest campus so we don't have enough people in our SGA for separate branches so I
kind of had to function as a judge in a lot of instances there so I kind of know how to make calls
and try to be equitable to as many people as Chris was saying that equity was kind of word II
kept hearing and I think that's what we need to focus most on for being judges being equitable
and make sure that our decisions no matter who our decisions are affecting that they are applied
equally across the board and uh thank you.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you for that response. We will now hear from Yash Patni.
Yash Patni: yeah awesome yeah so sorry about this but UM some of the reasons I wanted to be a
justice where you know I really wanted to have an impact on my community at Penn State
community and I found that as being one of the best ways I also like the judicial system and we'd
like to learn a lot more about it as well uhm that's it for me I'm sorry about all this but yeah.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you all, that was perfect timing, we will now move into the question
period for any of the justices, we will have 10 minutes, please your hand and I will call on you.
Are there any questions? Seeing none, I will have the nominees join a GroupMe to leave the
meeting. We will utilize the GroupMe to communicate with you after discussion and when we
have the votes. Chief Zaia you can go ahead and add them back into the room and let them know
that they're able to rejoin. They are joining chiefs Zaia if you can just give me indication of when
everyone has loaded on. Congratulations Andrew Waldman durability firm doesn't associate
justice for the J board with a vote of 26-1-0 congratulation Christine Gonzalez who have been
confirmed as an associate justice on the J board with a vote of 27-0-0 congratulations lower
Lawrence corridoni you have been confirmed as an associate justice with the vote of 26-0-1 and
congratulations Yash Patni you have been confirmed as an associate justice with a vote of 27-0-0
thank you all. We will now move on to line item B which is the confirmation of the director of
public relations Emily Zimbler confirmation of executive co- director of first year counsel Dan
risser confirmation of director of outreach Ashley hayford and the confirmation of the director of
communications who race southern we will have you all go in order based on what was
presented you have 5 minutes to speak about your qualifications and your role in those positions
that is the order that you will speak in and it is a combined of five minutes please try to keep
your introductions to at least one minute and then you have 10 minutes for any questions we will
now begin with Emily Zimbler.
Emily Zimbler: uh my name is Emily Zimbler and I'm a senior majoring in public relations and
minoring in political science in French and I'm from outside of Chicago I was interested in this
role because I was involved with UPUA last year where I served as the press secretary under
president McKay’s administration I really wanted to continue progressing my communication
skills and have the ability to apply what I've learned in my classes while working for an
organization with such great people and values after last year I want to continue what I had been
building on and really work with others in the UPUA to make Penn State a better place for all
students in my experience I've been doing political communications ever since I was in high
school and I knew I wanted to do this for a living ever since I've interned for campaigns and
politicians were so which have really helped me fine tune and expand my communication skills
as well as what I've learned in my classes here at Penn State I would love the opportunity to use
my skills to aid present bows and vice president Rodriguez and whatever they may need for this
year stemming off of that I have a lot of goals for the department and myself personally I really
want to make the UPUA more accessible for students and for the UPUA be recognized more I
want the students to feel like they can approach this with anything and know that the UPUA is
working for them I would also love to work with all the other departments and all the assembly
members on a personal level I wanted to continue expanding my skills become a better writer
and speaker and definitely focus on transparency I would love an opportunity to serve as the
executive director of public relations for the school year and help the UPUA achieve its goals of
helping out every single Penn State student.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you. We will now move onto Dan Risser.
Dan Risser: hello everyone, my name's dan and I am a rising third year student majoring in labor
and human resources and political science gear at Penn State Irish I initially hail from York PA
so my record of service in the UPUA goes back to my very first day stepping foot here on Penn
State campus getting involved in the freshman council well that's evolved and changed
throughout the course of my time here at Penn State I could not be more excited to be up for you
guys for confirmation tonight to be the director of the first year council so really I'd like to center
my I'd like to send the first year council this next year for this upcoming year around 3/3 values I
guess you could say and that's engagement opportunity and equity so surrounding engagement
on this surrounds like programming from fun get to know you activities so to allow freshmen to
meet their best friends as I did that in EU PUA along with professional development and
practical skills to help students adjust to life at college from a professional and academic
standpoint as far as opportunity goes for a lot of people some people who joined freshman
council or the first year council you PM on may not be for them that may not be a prolonged
theme of their college career no matter what I would love to help them use my vast network here
at Penn State that I've built throughout my tenure here to help people no matter what it is find
their passion find their club and find their circle here at Penn State no matter what and finally on
equity so I would love so it is so it's going to be so vital to myself and Co director Garry to make
sure that every member feels welcome in this organization no matter what branch no matter what
project they're in that is always going to be at the forefront making sure people feel welcome and
included in this organization so thank you so much for your time.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you Dan, we will now move to Ashley Hayford.
Ashley Hayford: everyone my name is Ashley Hayford come first thing I just wanted to say I'm
really grateful to be nominated to this role for the 16th assembly is the director of outreach and
I'm super excited to continue my work upon my pending confirmation I'm a rising 4th year
studying digital and print journalism and I'm minoring in political science uh my start with
UPUA is in the past I attended countless UPUA meetings as a student journalist which allowed
me to understand the structure and importance of the legislative branch and then last year I had
the pleasure of joining the 15th assembly as the director of speech writing so my experience as a
viewer and participant in UPI efforts has led me to want to bridge the gap between the
organization and the student body as well as create a fun and collaborative environment within
the UPUA during my time as the acting director of outreach I've loved working alongside Emily
and grace to create a new brand strategy for the UPUA so we are more accessible and inviting
towards students and additionally I'd love to set up some goals and initiatives that I'm super
excited about just to name a few I plan to have at least two student organization crashes per
month with at least one being with a minority caucus on campus each month I'm also super
excited to hopefully plan at least one UPUA event every three weeks like resource drives
member meetups and free food events and also to collaborate with our very own first year
council and others to create a lifeline between the UPUA and the student body the efforts of
UPUA or only as good as our ability to connect with students and I look forward to being that
person to create to create a safe educational and fun environment for students to learn about what
we do I'm also going to bring as much creativity to this role as possible and of course will always
lend an ear to anyone who would love to chat about initiatives and connections with me within
and outside of this organization.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much. We will now move to Grace Southern.
Grace Southern: thank you so much for the nomination my name is grace southern I'm rising
fifth year majoring in integrative arts, my primary reason photo and my secondary is in graphic
design and then I'm also pursuing a business certificate I currently work in how galleries is our
communication intern and I also have experience as a marketing intern and I've been very
involved around the campus in the arts doing graphic design production and projection design
marketing and photo direction I was drawn to this role because over the pandemic I got to work
with a pro bono nonprofit group created by some students at Boston University that provided PR
communications assistance to small businesses that were affected by COVID I really love being
a part of a group that wanted to make a difference and I love that this position was able to give
me that and then also provide me with a creative outlet as well as physician I hope to give you a
solidified and sustainable branding throughout branding through branding guide and extensive
photo libraries I would love to provide consistency throughout all platforms so that be through
our social media headshots press releases advertisements I would also love to implement a
system for better communication in terms of graphic requests so that the process and turn around
is a smooth as possible and just thank you so much for this opportunity.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you all, are there any questions, if so, please raise your hand and I will
call on you.
Samantha Browne: Samantha Browne at large; if you guys are candidates for positions at our
executive directors and directors that means that you will have people working under you
working next to you so I was wondering if you could explain a position where you had a
leadership role and how you will implement that into your new position and I think you could
just go on the order that you went in for your speeches.
Emily Zimbler: I have a lot of experience working in teams, especially with internships I've
done and also I'm involved on campus with Sigma Kappa as I am serve as the diversity inclusion
chair so I have to obviously work with everyone and just to meet our goal obviously sometimes
it can be challenging and there's like some obstacles but I know at the end of the day we can all
like go there and be super productive and make the goals that we need to make and I love like a
really fun collaborative environment.
Dan Risser: the best example that comes to mind is being chair for a couple of months past
semester the leading committee really taught me a difficult lessons of leadership hands on style
and also taught me how to work with people a little better when how much you can get out of
people and how to like respect boundaries give people space time and empathy when working on
some of the tough topics that UPUA is involved.
Ashley Hayford: yeah so I've had some leadership roles UM ranging from like the daily
collegian happy valley communications Penn State homecoming and that kind of thing and the
biggest thing that I would take from these leadership roles and bring into this leadership role is
that I always want to make sure that people feel heard and welcomed especially on a large
campus in the realm of outreach I couldn't echo what Dan said better I think it's most important
to bring empathy to the table and make sure that everybody feels welcome.
Grace Southern: what comes to mind for me is that I've been very involved throughout my whole
college career in the Penn State best bands and I've held multiple leadership roles with them
going from stage manager graphic design chairs scenic designer product projections designer and
each time would have to work with very large groups of students often different backgrounds
and I really love the collaboration efforts between everyone to really respect each other and
listen to each other’s ideas and just come together to create something bigger and know that it's
bigger than yourself and just supporting everyone.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you all for your responses, speaker Gibbard.
Sydney Gibbard: hello Sidney giver College of engineering my other question actually
specifically directed at Dan so the rest of you don't have to answer it but I know Dan you were a
chair last year for part of the year and obviously you're on the legislative side and so you kind of
saw how freshman council acted when we were freshmen versus how freshman council was last
year and I think that I see pros and cons of kind of like both ways and giving freshmen the
opportunity to have actual positions within the legislative side or just more like solidified kind of
paths and I guess I was wondering and maybe this is something to figure out with Amy if you
were to be confirmed and everything but just what your thoughts are on like kind of combining
those methods and what your vision is I guess for this year.
Dan Risser: that’s a phenomenal question. Obviously the past two years have kind of been polar
opposites our freshman year our experiences where you can do whatever you want you could
help reps with whatever you want but the onus was really on the representatives to reach out to
the to reach out to members to get involved for them for members to get involved in like
anything there are a lot of people kind of left hanging dry that really didn't compliment
introverted personalities however this year people would apply to specific positions under the
McKay administration either for specific committee branch executive department judicial clerks
really cool programming there and I love it I love that aspect last year do because it got it got
everyone involved in different branches so I the answer lies in the middle ground I'd love to do
some sort of routine rotational program so all members can get exposure to every single part of
our organization see what they like see what they don't like and maybe after a few weeks few
months start to get a more solidified role in the Oregon get ready to like take up leadership so
leadership roles and projects that's definitely something that will work hand in hand with reps
and executive directors to develop as we go.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you Dan. Are there any other questions? Representative Zhang.
Steven Zhang: I'm going to put dan on the hot seat as well starting for other questions I think one
of the most important aspects of UPUA especially during the formative times of a lot of first year
students either as they're joining different organizations and coming to Penn State is
understanding not only the different dynamics and the power structures that play within and
outside of the organization but also the history of the UPUA and the different injustices that add
may have been committed in the past so my question for you is how do you plan to navigate the
many different issues that occur on campus whether it's navigating and dealing with secret
societies whether it is the different frictions that UK has had with different multicultural
caucuses in the past in the future and how do we really help first year students really understand
that upua Penn state great institutions but they aren't all sunshine and rainbows?
Dan Risser: question and the answer is it's hard it's really hard and it's kind of sobering and in the
past it's been kind of some this organizations past history has been something that's kind of been
something that we learned as we went different facts came out as we went so I think stupid
buzzword here but transparency as issues before issues arise being forward with freshman with
first year council members about our past before talking about certain sensitive issues providing
that context so that honestly we can treat members like adults your they made it to college they
made it's Penn State University park we should be treating these members like adults and
allowing them to form their own decisions and just providing information putting it out there in
front of them and allowing them to make their own decisions we can't force them to make it
make any decisions of who they associate with or what they want to believe but I think as our
director it's our job to not hide any information.
Najee Rodriguez: are there any further questions? Seeing none, I will now upload the GroupMe
link for you all to join. once you have joined, please indicate that you are about to leave so we
can keep record of who's joining GroupMe as soon as discussion and explanation is over, I will
invite you back into the zoom beyond the group meet again please join whenever you are ready
and please indicate that you are in before you leave over zoom chat thank you. I will now inform
the candidates to rejoin the zoom via the GroupMe. As soon as you rejoin, please go ahead, and
let us know in the zoom chat I'm inviting them back in one second OK seeing that all nominees
are back in the zoom congratulations Emily Zimbler you have been confirmed the vote of 26-2-0
for the executive director of public relations. Congratulations Dan Risser you have been voted as
the executive co-director of first year council with a vote of 27-1-0. Congratulations Ashley
Hayford you have been voted and confirmed as the director of outreach with a vote of 26-2-0.
Congratulation Grace Southern, you have been voted and confirmed as director of
communications with a unanimous vote. Moving forward we will now be going into line item C
which is the confirmation of the director of academic affairs Robert grots confirmation of
director of governmental affairs Kianna Bingham confirmation or director of justice and equity
renne Richardson and then lastly the confirmation of director of student life paid Miller each
individual will have 5 minutes to speak about their qualifications and interest in the position I
will be posting the order in the zoom chat so you're able to take reference we can begin with
Robert grots you may unmute yourself and begin whenever you are ready.
Robert Grots: thank you for giving me the chance of introduce myself little bit more my name is
Robert gross and I'm a 21 year old rising senior studying education and public policy here at
University Park with a huge interest and international policy to learn more about the strengths
and weaknesses that other countries may be facing when it comes to policy creation and making
sure that most of the population speaking being taken into consideration in order to make the
right decision they'll benefit all perspectives I was born and raised in Latvia and lived there until
she doesn't nine or I learn the native language Latvian and English at the same time while
attending the International School and which I was able to fully immerse myself in a very
diverse community of students and teachers at a very young age my love for learning about my
own traditions and other cultures peak during this time for sure and I felt lucky enough to be a
part of a community that our community that highly encourage students to have an open mind
and perspective on the world around them even if I can't remember every little detail of what I've
been able to absorb from my time back in lefty these experiences have shaped me into the person
that you see before you today my family I decided to move to Boston MA and after multiple
rounds of interviews at 9 and 10 years old I was lucky enough to attend Dexter Southfield school
a very well-known procedures go around my area this change was my first experience and what
others may call as a culture shock because of how different the American traditions were
compared to my very old timey songs and dances that I had memorized was back living back in
Latvia eat living the easier life while still going to school Monday through Friday on Saturday I
attended a Latvian school with other Latin Americans they can continue practicing and
strengthening our Latvian traditions and roots after five to six hours of history in language
classes I would say after school to attend the Latin American Boy Scout troop in which I was
able to become Americans would consider as an Eagle Scout soon becoming my troops leader
not to not too much later after five years of living in the big city my family and I moved to
Vermont where I tended what stocking in high school or my graduating class is made up of
police 16 kids or so moving to Vermont introduced me to the athletics such as running cross
country in the fall, alpine ski racing during the winter are running track and spring wells also
rolling for nearby school in New Hampshire I wanted to do everything going to Woodstock also
allow me to participate in clubs such as the French National Honor Society which I would not
have or which I would not have had the opportunity to experience if I were still living in Boston
because the district exam school process soon enough it was time to start my college career at
Norwich University a private military school located in Norwich Vermont as a pre Med major
studying bio behavioral health and psychology my passion for wanting to help people on a
personal level was my focus until realizing that this was a way out of my own comfort zone and
telling and attending a military university to prove myself to others or was not the way to go for
someone like me I ended up getting myself tested professionally to learn later that I had an
executive function disorder an academic disability without add social anxiety which maybe feel
instantly out of place from being able to experience like your average college experience then I
took the time to really think about my values and passions by taking a risk and transferring I
soon found Penn State and fell in love with it instantly I started at Penn State Lee High Valley
my sophomore year continue to study bio behavioral health and psychology until realizing that
just semester later I'll be changing it to education and public policy where I am now as much as I
had the lingering thought of not being able to help people and more personal level that soon
changed once I started my internship with Shelly silver Reno located in New York City you may
know what I'd be referring to when it comes to districts you represented district 32 if you're from
that area but as someone who has only visited New York City once a few years ago I had
absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into but it was an experience I definitely want to be
a part of after a month or two of writing and editing policy for a campaign was promoted to
deputy director of legislative affairs and was able to now finalize policies and work with the
communications team on methods that we could use in order to get to the OR get the campaigns
word out by documenting sorry documenting it on a social media pages website or our general or
by going out general public by campaigning on the streets one of my favorite stories of this
campaign I was when I was woken up by a phone call from my supervisor at 8:00 AM tell me
that entire block in our district burned to the ground leaving twenty families homeless and then
following the tragic event with that fact that I was the only one available at the time to take
responsibility of what had happened as much as I may have been definitely freaking out at the
moment I was able to use my instincts and what I've learned throughout my college career so far
and this internship to get everything done as efficiently as quickly as possible after a few
stressful hours it was confirmed that those twenty families we're safe and avoided sleeping on the
streets which I would say was one of my proudest moments of my 21 year old life so far and I
really just take it that too hard and think about that every day uh with all these amazing
opportunities and challenges that I had the chance to experience at such a young age it was
telling develop my own values and passions in ways I never would have predicted even after
year being at University Park I can say I've been really enjoying the person I'm becoming
because my positive and open mindset I've been able to conquer the fear of feeling isolated
because my academic disorder and language barriers by creating a system for myself that works
best for me in the classroom or in the classroom or on zoom right now right in front of you as a
director of academic affairs I strive to make sure that all perspectives are being heard when it
comes to making a community wide decision allowing those outside of UPUA to before to feel
free to connect with us to make sure that all concerns are being addressed and taken into
consideration as much as that we may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of due to the
end of COVID-19 and its strict stay at home restrict or restrictions our next challenge is
addressing the concerns of students who have suffered emotionally and physically severely
impacting their mental health and ultimately their academic performance I hope to help create
environment where everyone can feel welcome to share their stories and hardships without
having the pressure of feeling you're alone we're here to work on these issues together and to
come to a fair community based conclusion that could benefit all personalities perspectives and
stories thank you very much.
Najee Rodriguez: Just one thing before we hear the next speech, I just have to regulate for five
minutes more strictly but you may begin whenever you're ready.
Kianna Bingham: my name is Kianna I am a rising senior studying political science and

homeless population in addressing the issue of food insecurity within the inner city of
Philadelphia I am here because I care about changing their constate I have dedicated my college
career to fighting for the voices of the unheard and exposing the wrongs of the past in my
position I hope to continue to fight for the communities who are often silenced the director of
government affairs I hope to encourage his fire more people to come and advocate for
themselves at Capitol Hill day, hope to learning grow from other people and their experiences
learn from other marginalized communities and works make Penn State feel like a home away
from home for everyone and wants to make sure that to be happy and happy valley there isn't a
criteria and the goal of happiness is achievable for everyone I hope that when every student
comes to Penn State they can grow more than four years and they have in their whole entire lives
and they won't feel stunted growth because they feel unseen or unheard I went to help his state
create amazing people that we all that we all see this world needs more than ever and I hope that
we can do that together.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much for that speech we are now going to move to Rene
Richardson as the nominee for the director of justice and equity.
Rene Richardson: Hello everyone, my name is Rene Richardson, I am an accounting student here
at Penn State I serve as lion ambassador, a member of transforming education steering
committee, and a member of the pep bands I am so grateful for the opportunity to be back in
another year in the UPUA serving our student body I am excited to be able to get a full semester
of work in this position as when I was confirmed last spring in March it was right before the
administration switch so I couldn't get much of the work I planned to do done so I'm very excited
to start with this full fall and really get word going I want to work collaboratively with everyone
within the UPUA as director of justice and equity most importantly working coherently with the
committee on justice and equity already meeting with the chair we plan on ensuring that the
members of the department are supportive to the representatives and they're also likewise the
reps are supportive to our department we want this to be a working team that can rely on each
other my experience with working with the office of educational equity and having mentors are
able to aid me in equity work at Penn State will help me with this role but I also want you to
know that having a team as well versed in all aspects of justice and equity will be the most
impactful for success so my goals for this semester is too alongside Erin, Najee, and Sarah to
create roles within the department that aligned with the committees initiative tracking form this
will mean that our roles will cater towards gender equity and disabilities racial justice and so on
so it will strengthen the collaboration as representatives if they're working on a certain resolution
can reach out to someone within our department I also plan on attending committee meetings so I
can report back to representatives needs to my department and the executive branch meetings so
in the end I believe that success will come from good communication and collaboration this year
I’m so excited to see all the work you all do I do.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you Rene, we will now move to cade miller who is running for the
director of student life.
Cade Miller: Hi, my name is Cade Miller, I am a second year student, studying broadcast
journalism and I'm from Inwood, WV first of all thank you for my nomination would say my
“why” for this director position is because I'm an orientation leader this year virtually of course
and we did extensive training with the title IX office and the office and the caps office and we
are very we teach the students on what resources they can use in whichever reason they would
need to so I would say this is a great thing for students to know we do tell about orientation but I
can assure like many of students we don't really pay attention during orientation but we can
always advocate for other offices that are necessary these are uncomfortable conversations
especially with the title IX office but is a necessary conversation with that there's also with the
safety we can advocate for on campus safety as a committee we can also inform students of
involvement on campus with other organizations who are looking for students to be involved and
of course that we can be a great advocate for them as the student government but yeah that's
pretty much all I need to say thank you everybody for listening.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much, I appreciate all of your responses. I will now move into
questions for the nominees. Are there any questions?
Samantha Browne: my question is directed at Cade could you just tell me a little bit more about
how your own personal passions align with the student life committee?
Cade Miller: Yes, so I went into orientation thing was just helping to build my resume but I
actually fell in love with it it's awesome to teach new students first of all how to be a great Penn
state when they're first joining the school but also just teaching how to be a great student all
around so I think that I we add orientation we talk about involvement right from the start and I
always see I loved seeing when new students instantly find something that they're enjoy and
what they want to be involved with I also like sharing the resources that Penn State has we all
know as student representatives there are a lot of resources at Penn State but we don't know
every single one and it's just it encourages me to know that Penn State there are so many things
that Penn State has that students can use and I just think that's awesome and to be honest I'm just
an absolute Penn State maniac and so when we when we share these opportunities for students
it's just it's I think it's amazing.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you, are there any more questions?
Lakyn Meeder: everyone my question is joes as director how would you guys ensure that there
is seamless communication between the committees that you will be directing to the legislative
branch and the executive branch?
Najee Rodriguez: we can answer this in order.
Robert Grots: so I believe that we are all students together, all her to assist together, and all part
of this process together and the best is to encourage each other as much as possible at all times
and that's why I'm making sure that everyone's voices are heard and no matter what the
discussion this question maybe it impact it can impact the majority of the student body and I
believe that without the proper perspective there isn't proper communication people would feel
left out and I'll be there to strengthen that.
Kianna Bingham: I think personally in my other roles I've learned that if we like each other we
talk a lot more to each other and we can help each other a lot more that way so just kind of
creating a positive team working environment that you feel comfortable to use your voice say
something to me if you don't agree with something that I said if you feel like something I said
was offensive I feel like you said was offensive uhm we can just come together and talk about
that I feel so that's the best way to communicate we actually know the people that you're around
so I'm super excited to be back in person I feel as though having I don't know how comfortable
people are or what's the plans but just having in person meetings can definitely shrink
communication because I know personally not to do it purposely but I look at my phone and I
see the message and then I don't respond and I know they have this on me a lot in my leadership
rules so I just think that us seeing each other in person getting lunch in the hub could possibly
increase communication just liking each other honestly would be the best way to go.
Rene Richardson: I believe that in order to strengthen communications and teamwork in a group
it's really important to get people that actually like each other and also want to work with each
other so I really want this year for my departments are really become friends cause when they
become friends you work hard you work Better Together and I think that's a really important
thing because we're doing work for the student body but we also want to be friends with each
other we want to get to know each other and make friends along the way so I think there will be
an important way of getting people to work together and collaborate another thing I also want to
emphasize is that in terms of communication and such I really want this department to be open
doors I really want anyone to just if you have any concerns questions come to me and I’ll have
meetings with them weekly and our department meetings will be biweekly so allow them to be
able to come to me anytime they have any issues or concerns so it will allow it to be really open
and transparent.
Cade Miller: I’m going to hop on the team building bandwagon as well I do think a team works
better when they know each other the communication should be open yet honest to anyone that is
involved with the committee but also with Penn state's student life and student affairs we can
work closely with their offices with them and then once we work with them, we can work with
our committee and then go.
Najee Rodriguez: ok thank you, are there any further questions for the candidates seeing none I
will go ahead and load the GroupMe into the chat I will ask that you all join this group me and
once you do join to please just inform us in the chat I am sending the link now and this is for us
to let you know if you've been on earlier whenever the discussion is over and whenever president
boas has finished her explanation so please join that group me whenever you get a chance and
we can continue on OK thank you as soon as you give us confirmation that you're in thank you
Robert you may leave the zoom thank you Cade and then we will inform you… congratulations
to the new director of academic affairs Robert Grots you have been confirmed with a vote of 26-
2-0. congratulations to the new director of governmental affairs Kianna Bingham you have been
confirmed with a vote of unanimous. congratulations to Rane Richardson the newly confirmed
director of justice and equity you've been confirmed with the unanimous vote and
congratulations to cade miller the new director of student life you have been confirmed with a
vote of 27-1-0. congratulations to all of you and I know we cannot wait to see the work that you.
Item D the confirmation of the at large representatives Nora O'Toole and Nina Sampogne you
will each have 5 minutes to speak about your qualifications and your experience in this realm
and then we will have time for questions we will go into control orders starting with Nora
O'Toole and then we will move that way.
Nora O’Toole: I am a rising sophomore double majoring in cybersecurity and an actual politics
with a focus on national security and I'm currently involved with the presidential leadership
Academy and have worked on many campaigns in the past so reaching out and connecting to
people on both professional and personal level something on very familiar with I am also
currently working under the human language technologies lab researching phishing scam emails
under the Big Ten schools as well as building a privacy lock corpus that includes jurisdictions
from over 180 countries and having the opportunity to work under research lab and have an
internship this past summer is also really helped me only my communication skills as well when
it comes to organizing and getting ideas across if confirmed as an at large representative my first
primary initiative would be to start addressing the issue of the black representation across the
different groups of students at Penn State we need to go to the marginalized students directly
include them in on conversations and efforts to make Penn State more equitable inclusive and
diverse otherwise our target audience wouldn't be reached in our message will get lost with this
first initiative I'd also like to work with multicultural community did not only collaborate and
address the lack of diversity but also encourage students to run for seats to have a better
representation within the UPUA I acknowledge that I come from a place of privilege where I
speak of slack representation yet do not have to feel effects so I'll care for intention and meaning
in regards to my actions and words when it comes to my place of privilege to help other
marginalized students another initiative that I'd love to accomplish given the opportunity is voter
registration and marginalized student groups of students at Penn State who lack access to some
of the UPUA programs offered and left at a disadvantage without going directly to those students
the opportunities those programs offer or not felt by the students who would benefit the most
from having them we need to start looking at some of UPS programs and recognize where we
may be missing the target audience and see where we keep them to approve our outreach efforts
that are all students at Penn State especially those marginalized students who typically get left
behind thank you for your attention and I will be taking the consideration for position.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you, we will now move on to Nina Sampogne.
Nina Sampogne: I am a rising sophomore I am a major in biology on the pre Med track with a
minor in forensic science something that I really love about this program is just the ability to
reach others in this previous year I have served as the vice president of the polices residents
association and I just fell in love with it even with COVID I was still able to volunteer get my
word out there and document a total of 442 hours of community service during a pandemic
community service is something that is just a part of who I am and I have served my community
the nation and across the world with over 3000 hours of documents and community service
throughout my life I've served on the children's advocacy board collegiate council for the very
first time that it was ever created and I was also part of the first ever thought on freshmen
committee I'm someone that you know believes that community service is so valid and so
important and especially in today's world where we are so connected to each other we need to get
out there and you know Penn State has such an outreach and I believe that we can truly make a
difference which is why I started the first ever child abuse awareness prevention month at Penn
State campus this year I've worked diligently with the children's advocacy center and I believe
that this is such a valid and important aspect that our community can bring together and just
make a difference I have also been a world and conversation facilitator holding dialogue
throughout the world encouraging discussions of diversity and inclusion which is something that
is just an amazing opportunity to have and I believe that making these conversations with other
people is how we you know change our perspectives on the world and are you the rest of my
time and I’m just very happy to be here and excited to meet you.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you for your responses I appreciate those, and we will now move into
questions for either all of the candidates or an individual candidate if you have a question, please
raise your hand and I will call on you are there any questions?
Samantha Browne: could you both explain one initiative that you'd be really passionate and
trying to work on if you were elected to this position?
Nora O’Toole: yeah so I'll start up like I mentioned earlier I really would just love I've so over
the past year I've had a lot of conversations where there have been students who just don't feel
represented and the issue that through to that problem is that they just we don't have
representation as much representation in UPUA as I think we can have and so I think we need to
go to those groups those multicultural groups of students and like encourage students to run them
anyway and just kind of adjust that lack of representation.
Nina Sampogne: I’m an ambassador for the stop the silence organization which brings
awareness to sexual assault and being not only a Hispanic woman but someone especially so
involved with this I believe that we need more representation and more awareness to this topic I
have been you know living on the Penn State campus for this first year and there have been 17
sexual assaults even during a pandemic just alone that number is way too high and as the
representative for the stop the silence organization at Penn State University I really want to bring
more attention to this issue I really think that Penn State could be doing more and we could be
doing more as a community to make sure that our students and our friends and our peers are safe.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you for those responses, are there any other questions? Speaker Gibbard
informed me that all of you are in a group chat, so you do not need to join a GroupMe, she will
let you know when you can join the meeting again. Both nominees have just rejoined the call
congratulations Nora O’Toole you have been confirmed as an at large representative with a vote
of 24-3-1 and congratulations Nina Stampogne you have been confirmed with a vote of 27-0-1.
congratulations I cannot wait to see the work you undertake in this assembly. Well now move
into the swearing in of the associate justice is the director of public relations the Co-director of
first year counsel the director of outreach the director of communications director of academic
affairs governmental affairs justice and equity academic affairs at large representatives and our
new ISE representative’s president Boas will deliver the oath of office please unmute yourself
and juniors and say it and say it along with president Boas.
Erin Boas: if you can just unmute yourself and raise your right hand and I'm going to go line by
line so just repeat after I speak aa line. “I promise to faithfully uphold the constitution of
University Park Undergraduate Association and to defend the rights of each individual student
while working towards to betterment of student life. I shall perform to the best of my abilities,
the responsibilities and duties that have been entrusted to me by the University Park
Undergraduate student body and the virtue to the office in which I hold.” Congratulations all.
Najee Rodriguez: congratulations to all of you. We'll now move into line-item F which is bill
216 “Supporting first and advocates and the school supply distribution packs” chair Kallur will
you please introduce this.
Aarthi Kallur: yeah sorry I don't have it pulled up right here but basically it's the continuation of
the school supply pack that we did with Jayne last assembly of we didn't really change much
concert like with all the items that we bought and everything so that's pretty much going stay the
same and we're hoping to order everything and have them have the bags distributed like during
the first couple weeks of school to try to reach as many like freshmen and just new students at
Penn State and really just kind of give him a taste of what it does and also support for generation
students as well thank you.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Kallur, are there any questions? Seeing no questions, we will
now move into discussion is there any discussion on this bill… Bill 216 “Supporting first and
advocates and the school supply distribution packs” passes with a unanimous vote. Into line-item
G which is bill 0316 “renewing the subscription for soft edge advocacy tool” chair Meeder will
you be presenting this?
Lakyn Meeder: yes, OK hey guys, so basically what this bill is doing is renewing like the title
says this description for soft edge advocacy tool this is a platform that we've used a bit last year
basically what it does is it allows us to pre write up a message that we would want to send to
those typically legislators and we can't be tried who encouraged the student body to sign onto it
they input their name and their address and it'll send whatever letter we've pre typed to their
legislators but we can also target it to send to really anybody dead letters to the board of trustees
we could send letters to faculty if we ever needed to it also has the ability to track legislation
really easily which is helpful for a lot of the work that we do in Gov affairs it's essentially just a
writing a letter writing campaign that students are able to do remotely in the past letter writing
campaigns haven't been all that successful so this just makes it more accessible to all students
uhm the overall use of it last year in terms of the student body using it wasn't as large as we
would have expected or that we had hoped but we think that with the Department of Public
relations this year will have easier access to reach out to students and get this have them gain
attention for it & on to the campaigns so this bill is requesting $2700 to fund the subscription and
yeah I can stand for any questions.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Meeder, are there any questions? seeing no questions for chair
Meeder will now close the floor on questions and will move into discussion… bill 0316
“renewing the subscription for soft edge advocacy tool” passes with the vote of 33-0-0
congratulations we will now move into line-item H resolution 0516 “continuation of the racial
justice roundtable”
Aarthi Kallur: I am going to yield my time to representative Loiseau and Zhang.
Jeannelle Loiseau: um obviously this is the continuation of the racial justice roundtable this was
first brought into the 15th assembly of upua and that was brought up due to the black lives
matters movement and the kind of George Floyd so this was brought up through justice and
equity last year because there was summer assemblies a racial justice roundtable was held
during the summer and there's two different sessions about the same topic this year there's a
we're going to have multiple roundtables about different types of races and holidays and will be
held on holidays such as during Black History Month indigenous peoples day Hispanic heritage
month Asian heritage month etc. this is like a really great opportunity for people of minorities
to come together and express their either comments or concerns relating to like either the
university's handling of these types of situations like the zoom bombings that did happen last
year and recently the removal of the federal Castro quote from the peaked and this will cover
all different types of ground since we will be doing it on different types of holidays and I’ll yield
my time to representee Zhang if he wants to add anything.
Steven Zhang: I just wanted to I guess continue to speak in support of the roundtable and the
idea that the primary goal is to make sure that communities of color are able to have a place to
connect with other organizations as well as the UPUA and just have spaces to voice it concerns
in a forum where everyone can have representation and everyone is brought into the same
room I think oftentimes university doesn't not have ample space for people of color to really
express their concerns or advocate as a group in a lot of the owners does end up falling on
students so I think it's an imperative that the student government also assists in bringing those
teams together.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you we will now move into questions are there any questions for
represented representatives also or Zhang if so, please raise your hand and I will call on you are
seeing none I will now close the floor for questions and will move into discussion…bill 0516
“continuation of the racial justice roundtable” passes unanimously. We will now move into a
report Chief justice Zaia.
Jordan Zaia: a good summary has so far and I want to thank everyone for supporting the
confirmation of the other justices over the past two assembly meetings just some updates we
released for this policy decisions just based on the ones that were that came about at the end of
the spring semester they were all five to oh decisions and that's cause there were only five
justices up until today and further along with that we're going to be placing some more
applications up on the UPUA website for more clerk positions so those should be coming
sometime in like August and uh yeah other than that if anyone has any questions feel free to
shoot them over.
Najee Rodriguez: thank you, are there any questions if so, please raise your hand I will call on
you. Seeing none we will now move on to reports from the chief of staff and the executive
directors if they have any if you all could please raise your hand to be called on and if you do
have reports I would highly appreciate that. chief of staff Jordan
Sarah Jordan: all of our directors who were confirmed tonight I'm very excited to work with all
of you on this next assembly are executive department has been very busy this summer doing
late interviews as well as getting set up for the school year and this semester to begin we had our
first cabinet meeting on Monday it was very productive so I can't wait for the like branches to
work together this year with initiatives I'm working on all the teams channels the last few weeks
so if you haven't been on teams recently or you need help navigating it just shoot me a text or
email me I'll make another meet to go through it or I can just kind of walk you through it via text
but you should all be in there and new directors I will be adding you in after this meeting for
office Skype will be returning to that in the fall came to see you all in the office for those you
haven't been in the office yet it's a great time to meet people and get initiatives and everything
done so I'll be getting I'll be adding all of your swipes you can all access that when you get back
cool and then if you haven't done so already please fill out the contact sheet that has been sent in
numerous emails if you can't find it by any chance again text me or Erin and we can send that
over to you one last thing I know people are starting to book rooms. if you are please let me
know beforehand so I can kind of walk you through the website process it can be a little bit
confusing and wordy so if you need me to do it for you and just send the information over, I can
totally do that but as always, I’m here for you all.
Najee Rodriguez: are there any questions for the chief of staff Jordan if so, please raise your
hand and I will call on you seeing no questions are there any further reports by any executive
directors sing none we will now he reports by speaker Gibbard.
Sydney Gibbard: going to go through a few and most important things one is we have created
also I apologize in advance if my Wi-Fi is really bad I'm in Canada all right so first of all the
UPA calendar has been created I've sent it out in an email a few different times it's also in the
agenda in my report how to get that onto your computer end how to link it to your outlook so
please do that so you have like all the UPA calendar events on your calendar secondly the most
important thing is the way drive I just sent a link to it in the chat please bookmark it because
you're going to be using it throughout the entire year it has all of your committee drives in there
all of the initiatives in there any resources you could possibly need including bill resolution
policy templates and stuff so definitely go and bookmark that drive up next we're currently
working on developing programming time line which is really exciting so I'm hoping to actually
get that information out to you as soon as possible just so you have an overview of what the year
is going to look like what kind of programs you puree does if you're a new Rep and when you do
them sorry everyone pauses every once in a while with my Wi-Fi next former speaker Zhang and
I have been working on establishing plans for Idi training which is really exciting and I think it's
going to be a really great addition to the UPUA up so you can hear more you're going to hear
more about that within the coming months but I just wanted to let you know that that's on your
horizon and I want you to know that like got something that's going to be coming to you UPUA
Rep specifically within the next month or two all so this is really important we're establishing a
policy working group to oversee UPUA representation and statements and also internal
accountability so I'll be kind of examining our policies on public statements AKA who can
release them who can sign on to them who should approve them and also will be looking into our
policies on censure and the strike system which not a lot of people even know that is included in
the UPUA bylaws or constitution and it's very vague about when to use that so I'll definitely need
some help and input from all branches on that front to make that happen so be on the lookout for
some information on the working group and then the next most important thing is that in the
coming weeks we're hoping to release a UPUA wide survey I've talked to Barry about this and
we're going to clarify a little bit more within the coming weeks about asking people to optionally
within the org said and anonymously upload their vaccination information just so that we know
kind of in the organization what percentage of people are vaccinated I think that that will make
people feel a lot more comfortable going into rooms and we during UPUA activities again it will
be anonymous and optional but I will highly recommend that you get involved in that and that
way we're just kind of making educated decisions for the organization finally I'll be on boarding
all the new reps so make sure you text them and say hello once they're added to the contact sheet
imagine how stressed if you were when you join your UPUA and I know it's like a very
overwhelming organization so feel free come in just insert yourself. That’s all thanks!
Najee Rodriguez: any questions for speaker gibbard if so, please raise your hands
Sydney Gibbard: wait I forgot one more thing sorry
Najee Rodriguez: you are ok
Sydney Gibbard: I just wanted to mention just in case Steven doesn't get to do it in the comments
for the good of the order Stevens going to be represented Zhang is going to be leading a bill to
potentially purchase some N-95 masks I know you're talking a lot about that and the UPUA
group me and we were thinking about potentially bringing it tonight but for the sake of time and
for the sake of not bringing something by two 3rd we decided to push it off to an Ivo over
August the month of August so I want you guys to keep that on your radar so and if you're
interested in kind of formulating what distribution of N-95 masks will look like as a part of
mutual aid in the office that representative Rounds-Sorenson has set up then definitely reached
out to either two of those reps and that will be in the coming weeks
Najee Rodriguez: that being said are there any further questions for speaker Gibbard seeing none
we will move to committee reports beginning with academic affairs and chair Richardson.
Lewis Richardson: not too much today, keep the meeting moving checkbox checked my report
that written on the agenda I go into a bit of detail there about the initiatives the age he's going to
be getting into on behalf of AAC and myself like to extend an invitation to the new reps to join
AAC I guess everyone you know you're going to have to join committees eventually um for any
wraps in AAC that did not attend committee meeting notice that the Super inconvenient time
please reach out to me or Noah will be trying to reach out to you we just want to make sure that
we get you the information to get you get everybody on the same page starting the committee off
side from that glad to be here
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Richardson are there any questions for chair Richardson if so,
please raise your hand and that will call on you. all right seeing none ill now move into facilities
vice chair Nelson do you have anything to report other than chair Fliegel goals already
prewritten report
Jason Nelson: not at this time no
Najee Rodriguez: thank you vice chairman Nelson alright and if you do have questions for chair
Fliegel given that she's not here please contact her using the UPUA contact sheet will now move
into governmental affairs with chair meeder
Lakyn Meeder: hey everyone I’m thanks for passing this soft address soft edge resolution tonight
also like Louis said new reps please join Gov affairs at that same night you’re interested in um
also everyone check out my report and the agenda for more details about things other big things
if you're interested in running for past liaison please reach out to me we're still looking for
someone to fill that role and people from governors committee we will be having one on ones in
August you should lookout for signups for that in the upcoming dates thanks
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair meeder are there any questions for chair meeder seeing none
we'll now move into justice and equity with chair Kallur
Aarthi Kallur: first off, thank you all so much for passing our legislation I'm really excited to get
started on all the work and Congrats to all the newly confirmed members I'm really excited to
work with you and any new reps please consider joining J&E reach out to me if you have any

keep your Friday afternoons open I promise only keep you there for an hour and then you're free
to have your weekend so other than that that's it from me have a great rest of your night
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Kallur are there any questions for chair Kallur seeing none
will now move into student life with chair Browne
Samantha Browne: hi everyone I'm just a short report from me uhm we had student life this past
Monday but for Monday and so thank you all who attended if you haven't filled out your
initiative preference form please do that I've sent it in the group me like five times so please do
that and also our most pressing initiative is RedZone action week if you don't know what that is
it's addressing the sexual assault cases that happens when students immediately return to campus
or just coming to campus and we did lose a Rep who's working on that so if you're interested just
let me know and if you have any questions feel free reach out
Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Browne are there any questions for chair Browne seeing no
questions for chair Browne will move into comments for the good of the order are there any
comments for the good of the order if so, please raise your hand and I will call on you. chief of
staff Jordan
Sarah Jordan: sorry Sarah Jordan I forgot to add in my report that there are even though there
were not like some of the directors confirmed through assembly there have been a lot of directors
within department so if you want to get to know more about them and new roles for example or
director of the analytics is a new role with the assembly and all that stuff so they are looking

  • 1. Najee Rodriguez: we will now be moving into open student forum. If so, please raise your hand and I will call on you OK see you know students here for open student forum we will now hear or report by president boas president bows you may begin whenever you're ready. Seeing none, we will now move into liaison and affiliate reports. Seeing none, we will move into a five minute caucus breakout… please be aware to change your pronouns if you haven't already if you have the longer name please do so after the beginning of your first name and also please be sure to have your camera on if you possibly can that would be much appreciated alright and we will now move into line item a which is the confirmation of associate justice since Andrew Waldman Christine Gonzales Lawrence Corridoni and Yash Patni will be going in order from the name all of you will have a combined 5 minutes to speak consecutively about your qualifications and your interest in the role and then we'll also have 10 minutes for all of you afterwards and we will be going in sequential order please be sure to raise your hands if you are not already a panelist and we can go ahead and upgrade you. • 3. law and I am currently vice president of publications organization at school during my college career I have also completed internships with the board game project and congressman Cisneros 2020 congressional campaign after I graduated from temple the experience I had been UPUA was when I acted out as director of social media during the 15th assembly the position allowed many can experience with the new UPUA internally and learn the importance each person carried within the 15th assembly the experience helped me strengthen my communication leadership and average skills now being nominated as associate justice I'm hoping to become more involved with the UPUA director of social media allowed me to fully understand what the association is all about and what this information I'd like to apply this to the role I believe I carry diversity of opinions that will help strengthen the judicial court they may experience in school organizations and internships I want to understand the importance of diversity and fairness if confirmed I plan to apply this way of thinking into my decisions justice and equity carries major significance within the traditional board where I guarantee it will follow that principle as well to define justice and equity of my own words the two are in established relationship where they affect one another and ensuring all individuals to same level treatment opportunities and advancement justice of the guarantee of equality while equity determines the level of treatment to be confirmed into the road with socio justice would mean a great deal to me I have the skills and qualifications that established my trustworthiness and dedication I promise to hold truth to my burden sure the ethics needed for successful judicial word all I would like is a chance to prove it thank you and I hope everyone had many great summer. Najee Rodriquez: Thank you Christine, we will now move onto Lawrence Corridoni. Lawrence Corridoni: thank you everyone I first want to thank anyone who had any input in helping to nominate me my name is Lawrence or you call me Larry cordonia I'm a rising junior I'm a mechanical engineering major I did the 2 + 2 program so I was previously at Penn State Wilkes bare where I was the president of the student government association and I think that's my primary qualification for the job and there were a pretty small campus so I believe we're the second smallest campus so we don't have enough people in our SGA for separate branches so I kind of had to function as a judge in a lot of instances there so I kind of know how to make calls and try to be equitable to as many people as Chris was saying that equity was kind of word II kept hearing and I think that's what we need to focus most on for being judges being equitable and make sure that our decisions no matter who our decisions are affecting that they are applied equally across the board and uh thank you. Najee Rodriguez: thank you for that response. We will now hear from Yash Patni. Yash Patni: yeah awesome yeah so sorry about this but UM some of the reasons I wanted to be a justice where you know I really wanted to have an impact on my community at Penn State community and I found that as being one of the best ways I also like the judicial system and we'd like to learn a lot more about it as well uhm that's it for me I'm sorry about all this but yeah. Najee Rodriguez: thank you all, that was perfect timing, we will now move into the question period for any of the justices, we will have 10 minutes, please your hand and I will call on you. Are there any questions? Seeing none, I will have the nominees join a GroupMe to leave the meeting. We will utilize the GroupMe to communicate with you after discussion and when we

They are joining chiefs Zaia if you can just give me indication of when everyone has loaded on. Congratulations Andrew Waldman durability firm doesn't associate justice for the J board with a vote of 26-1-0 congratulation Christine Gonzalez who have been confirmed as an associate justice on the J board with a vote of 27-0-0 congratulations lower Lawrence corridoni you have been confirmed as an associate justice with the vote of 26-0-1 and congratulations Yash Patni you have been confirmed as an associate justice with a vote of 27-0-0 thank you all. We will now move on to line item B which is the confirmation of the director of public relations Emily Zimbler confirmation of executive co- director of first year counsel Dan risser confirmation of director of outreach Ashley hayford and the confirmation of the director of communications who race southern we will have you all go in order based on what was presented you have 5 minutes to speak about your qualifications and your role in those positions that is the order that you will speak in and it is a combined of five minutes please try to keep your introductions to at least one minute and then you have 10 minutes for any questions we will now begin with Emily Zimbler. Emily Zimbler: uh my name is Emily Zimbler and I'm a senior majoring in public relations and minoring in political science in French and I'm from outside of Chicago I was interested in this role because I was involved with UPUA last year where I served as the press secretary under president McKay’s administration I really wanted to continue progressing my communication skills and have the ability to apply what I've learned in my classes while working for an organization with such great people and values after last year I want to continue what I had been building on and really work with others in the UPUA to make Penn State a better place for all students in my experience I've been doing political communications ever since I was in high school and I knew I wanted to do this for a living ever since I've interned for campaigns and politicians were so which have really helped me fine tune and expand my communication skills as well as what I've learned in my classes here at Penn State I would love the opportunity to use my skills to aid present bows and vice president Rodriguez and whatever they may need for this year stemming off of that I have a lot of goals for the department and myself personally I really want to make the UPUA more accessible for students and for the UPUA be recognized more I want the students to feel like they can approach this with anything and know that the UPUA is working for them I would also love to work with all the other departments and all the assembly members on a personal level I wanted to continue expanding my skills become a better writer and speaker and definitely focus on transparency I would love an opportunity to serve as the executive director of public relations for the school year and help the UPUA achieve its goals of helping out every single Penn State student. Najee Rodriguez: thank you. We will now move onto Dan Risser. Dan Risser: hello everyone, my name's dan and I am a rising third year student majoring in labor and human resources and political science gear at Penn State Irish I initially hail from York PA so my record of service in the UPUA goes back to my very first day stepping foot here on Penn State campus getting involved in the freshman council well that's evolved and changed throughout the course of my time here at Penn State I could not be more excited to be up for you guys for confirmation tonight to be the director of the first year council so really I'd like to center my I'd like to send the first year council this next year for this upcoming year around 3/3 values I
  • 5. guess you could say and that's engagement opportunity and equity so surrounding engagement on this surrounds like programming from fun get to know you activities so to allow freshmen to meet their best friends as I did that in EU PUA along with professional development and practical skills to help students adjust to life at college from a professional and academic standpoint as far as opportunity goes for a lot of people some people who joined freshman council or the first year council you PM on may not be for them that may not be a prolonged theme of their college career no matter what I would love to help them use my vast network here at Penn State that I've built throughout my tenure here to help people no matter what it is find their passion find their club and find their circle here at Penn State no matter what and finally on equity so I would love so it is so it's going to be so vital to myself and Co director Garry to make sure that every member feels welcome in this organization no matter what branch no matter what project they're in that is always going to be at the forefront making sure people feel welcome and included in this organization so thank you so much for your time. Najee Rodriguez: thank you Dan, we will now move to Ashley Hayford. Ashley Hayford: everyone my name is Ashley Hayford come first thing I just wanted to say I'm really grateful to be nominated to this role for the 16th assembly is the director of outreach and I'm super excited to continue my work upon my pending confirmation I'm a rising 4th year studying digital and print journalism and I'm minoring in political science uh my start with UPUA is in the past I attended countless UPUA meetings as a student journalist which allowed me to understand the structure and importance of the legislative branch and then last year I had the pleasure of joining the 15th assembly as the director of speech writing so my experience as a viewer and participant in UPI efforts has led me to want to bridge the gap between the organization and the student body as well as create a fun and collaborative environment within the UPUA during my time as the acting director of outreach I've loved working alongside Emily and grace to create a new brand strategy for the UPUA so we are more accessible and inviting towards students and additionally I'd love to set up some goals and initiatives that I'm super excited about just to name a few I plan to have at least two student organization crashes per month with at least one being with a minority caucus on campus each month I'm also super excited to hopefully plan at least one UPUA event every three weeks like resource drives member meetups and free food events and also to collaborate with our very own first year council and others to create a lifeline between the UPUA and the student body the efforts of UPUA or only as good as our ability to connect with students and I look forward to being that person to create to create a safe educational and fun environment for students to learn about what we do I'm also going to bring as much creativity to this role as possible and of course will always lend an ear to anyone who would love to chat about initiatives and connections with me within and outside of this organization. Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much. We will now move to Grace Southern. Grace Southern: thank you so much for the nomination my name is grace southern I'm rising fifth year majoring in integrative arts, my primary reason photo and my secondary is in graphic design and then I'm also pursuing a business certificate I currently work in how galleries is our communication intern and I also have experience as a marketing intern and I've been very involved around the campus in the arts doing graphic design production and projection design
  • 6. marketing and photo direction I was drawn to this role because over the pandemic I got to work with a pro bono nonprofit group created by some students at Boston University that provided PR communications assistance to small businesses that were affected by COVID I really love being a part of a group that wanted to make a difference and I love that this position was able to give me that and then also provide me with a creative outlet as well as physician I hope to give you a solidified and sustainable branding throughout branding through branding guide and extensive photo libraries I would love to provide consistency throughout all platforms so that be through our social media headshots press releases advertisements I would also love to implement a system for better communication in terms of graphic requests so that the process and turn around is a smooth as possible and just thank you so much for this opportunity. Najee Rodriguez: thank you all, are there any questions, if so, please raise your hand and I will call on you. Samantha Browne: Samantha Browne at large; if you guys are candidates for positions at our executive directors and directors that means that you will have people working under you working next to you so I was wondering if you could explain a position where you had a leadership role and how you will implement that into your new position and I think you could just go on the order that you went in for your speeches. Emily Zimbler: I have a lot of experience working in teams, especially with internships I've done and also I'm involved on campus with Sigma Kappa as I am serve as the diversity inclusion chair so I have to obviously work with everyone and just to meet our goal obviously sometimes it can be challenging and there's like some obstacles but I know at the end of the day we can all like go there and be super productive and make the goals that we need to make and I love like a really fun collaborative environment. Dan Risser: the best example that comes to mind is being chair for a couple of months past semester the leading committee really taught me a difficult lessons of leadership hands on style and also taught me how to work with people a little better when how much you can get out of people and how to like respect boundaries give people space time and empathy when working on some of the tough topics that UPUA is involved. Ashley Hayford: yeah so I've had some leadership roles UM ranging from like the daily collegian happy valley communications Penn State homecoming and that kind of thing and the biggest thing that I would take from these leadership roles and bring into this leadership role is that I always want to make sure that people feel heard and welcomed especially on a large campus in the realm of outreach I couldn't echo what Dan said better I think it's most important to bring empathy to the table and make sure that everybody feels welcome. Grace Southern: what comes to mind for me is that I've been very involved throughout my whole college career in the Penn State best bands and I've held multiple leadership roles with them going from stage manager graphic design chairs scenic designer product projections designer and each time would have to work with very large groups of students often different backgrounds and I really love the collaboration efforts between everyone to really respect each other and
  • 7. listen to each other’s ideas and just come together to create something bigger and know that it's bigger than yourself and just supporting everyone. Najee Rodriguez: thank you all for your responses, speaker Gibbard. Sydney Gibbard: hello Sidney giver College of engineering my other question actually specifically directed at Dan so the rest of you don't have to answer it but I know Dan you were a chair last year for part of the year and obviously you're on the legislative side and so you kind of saw how freshman council acted when we were freshmen versus how freshman council was last year and I think that I see pros and cons of kind of like both ways and giving freshmen the opportunity to have actual positions within the legislative side or just more like solidified kind of paths and I guess I was wondering and maybe this is something to figure out with Amy if you were to be confirmed and everything but just what your thoughts are on like kind of combining those methods and what your vision is I guess for this year. Dan Risser: that’s a phenomenal question. Obviously the past two years have kind of been polar opposites our freshman year our experiences where you can do whatever you want you could help reps with whatever you want but the onus was really on the representatives to reach out to the to reach out to members to get involved for them for members to get involved in like anything there are a lot of people kind of left hanging dry that really didn't compliment introverted personalities however this year people would apply to specific positions under the McKay administration either for specific committee branch executive department judicial clerks really cool programming there and I love it I love that aspect last year do because it got it got everyone involved in different branches so I the answer lies in the middle ground I'd love to do some sort of routine rotational program so all members can get exposure to every single part of our organization see what they like see what they don't like and maybe after a few weeks few months start to get a more solidified role in the Oregon get ready to like take up leadership so leadership roles and projects that's definitely something that will work hand in hand with reps and executive directors to develop as we go. Najee Rodriguez: thank you Dan. Are there any other questions? Representative Zhang. Steven Zhang: I'm going to put dan on the hot seat as well starting for other questions I think one of the most important aspects of UPUA especially during the formative times of a lot of first year students either as they're joining different organizations and coming to Penn State is understanding not only the different dynamics and the power structures that play within and outside of the organization but also the history of the UPUA and the different injustices that add may have been committed in the past so my question for you is how do you plan to navigate the many different issues that occur on campus whether it's navigating and dealing with secret societies whether it is the different frictions that UK has had with different multicultural caucuses in the past in the future and how do we really help first year students really understand that upua Penn state great institutions but they aren't all sunshine and rainbows? Dan Risser: question and the answer is it's hard it's really hard and it's kind of sobering and in the past it's been kind of some this organizations past history has been something that's kind of been something that we learned as we went different facts came out as we went so I think stupid
  • 8. buzzword here but transparency as issues before issues arise being forward with freshman with first year council members about our past before talking about certain sensitive issues providing that context so that honestly we can treat members like adults your they made it to college they made it's Penn State University park we should be treating these members like adults and allowing them to form their own decisions and just providing information putting it out there in front of them and allowing them to make their own decisions we can't force them to make it make any decisions of who they associate with or what they want to believe but I think as our director it's our job to not hide any information. Najee Rodriguez: are there any further questions? Seeing none, I will now upload the GroupMe link for you all to join. once you have joined, please indicate that you are about to leave so we can keep record of who's joining GroupMe as soon as discussion and explanation is over, I will invite you back into the zoom beyond the group meet again please join whenever you are ready and please indicate that you are in before you leave over zoom chat thank you. I will now inform the candidates to rejoin the zoom via the GroupMe. Congratulation Grace Southern, you have been voted and confirmed as director of communications with a unanimous vote. Moving forward we will now be going into line item C which is the confirmation of the director of academic affairs Robert grots confirmation of director of governmental affairs Kianna Bingham confirmation or director of justice and equity renne Richardson and then lastly the confirmation of director of student life paid Miller each individual will have 5 minutes to speak about their qualifications and interest in the position I will be posting the order in the zoom chat so you're able to take reference we can begin with Robert grots you may unmute yourself and begin whenever you are ready. Robert Grots: thank you for giving me the chance of introduce myself little bit more my name is Robert gross and I'm a 21 year old rising senior studying education and public policy here at University Park with a huge interest and international policy to learn more about the strengths and weaknesses that other countries may be facing when it comes to policy creation and making sure that most of the population speaking being taken into consideration in order to make the right decision they'll benefit all perspectives I was born and raised in Latvia and lived there until she doesn't nine or I learn the native language Latvian and English at the same time while attending the International School and which I was able to fully immerse myself in a very diverse community of students and teachers at a very young age my love for learning about my own traditions and other cultures peak during this time for sure and I felt lucky enough to be a part of a community that our community that highly encourage students to have an open mind and perspective on the world around them even if I can't remember every little detail of what I've been able to absorb from my time back in lefty these experiences have shaped me into the person that you see before you today my family I decided to move to Boston MA and after multiple rounds of interviews at 9 and 10 years old I was lucky enough to attend Dexter Southfield school a very well-known procedures go around my area this change was my first experience and what others may call as a culture shock because of how different the American traditions were
  • 9. compared to my very old timey songs and dances that I had memorized was back living back in Latvia eat living the easier life while still going to school Monday through Friday on Saturday I attended a Latvian school with other Latin Americans they can continue practicing and strengthening our Latvian traditions and roots after five to six hours of history in language classes I would say after school to attend the Latin American Boy Scout troop in which I was able to become Americans would consider as an Eagle Scout soon becoming my troops leader not to not too much later after five years of living in the big city my family and I moved to Vermont where I tended what stocking in high school or my graduating class is made up of police 16 kids or so moving to Vermont introduced me to the athletics such as running cross country in the fall, alpine ski racing during the winter are running track and spring wells also rolling for nearby school in New Hampshire I wanted to do everything going to Woodstock also allow me to participate in clubs such as the French National Honor Society which I would not have or which I would not have had the opportunity to experience if I were still living in Boston because the district exam school process soon enough it was time to start my college career at Norwich University a private military school located in Norwich Vermont as a pre Med major studying bio behavioral health and psychology my passion for wanting to help people on a personal level was my focus until realizing that this was a way out of my own comfort zone and telling and attending a military university to prove myself to others or was not the way to go for someone like me I ended up getting myself tested professionally to learn later that I had an executive function disorder an academic disability without add social anxiety which maybe feel instantly out of place from being able to experience like your average college experience then I took the time to really think about my values and passions by taking a risk and transferring I soon found Penn State and fell in love with it instantly I started at Penn State Lee High Valley my sophomore year continue to study bio behavioral health and psychology until realizing that just semester later I'll be changing it to education and public policy where I am now as much as I had the lingering thought of not being able to help people and more personal level that soon changed once I started my internship with Shelly silver Reno located in New York City you may know what I'd be referring to when it comes to districts you represented district 32 if you're from that area but as someone who has only visited New York City once a few years ago I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into but it was an experience I definitely want to be a part of after a month or two of writing and editing policy for a campaign was promoted to deputy director of legislative affairs and was able to now finalize policies and work with the communications team on methods that we could use in order to get to the OR get the campaigns word out by documenting sorry documenting it on a social media pages website or our general or by going out general public by campaigning on the streets one of my favorite stories of this campaign I was when I was woken up by a phone call from my supervisor at 8:00 AM tell me that entire block in our district burned to the ground leaving twenty families homeless and then following the tragic event with that fact that I was the only one available at the time to take responsibility of what had happened as much as I may have been definitely freaking out at the moment I was able to use my instincts and what I've learned throughout my college career so far and this internship to get everything done as efficiently as quickly as possible after a few stressful hours it was confirmed that those twenty families we're safe and avoided sleeping on the streets which I would say was one of my proudest moments of my 21 year old life so far and I really just take it that too hard and think about that every day uh with all these amazing opportunities and challenges that I had the chance to experience at such a young age it was telling develop my own values and passions in ways I never would have predicted even after
  • 10. year being at University Park I can say I've been really enjoying the person I'm becoming because my positive and open mindset I've been able to conquer the fear of feeling isolated because my academic disorder and language barriers by creating a system for myself that works best for me in the classroom or in the classroom or on zoom right now right in front of you as a director of academic affairs I strive to make sure that all perspectives are being heard when it comes to making a community wide decision allowing those outside of UPUA to before to feel free to connect with us to make sure that all concerns are being addressed and taken into consideration as much as that we may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of due to the end of COVID-19 and its strict stay at home restrict or restrictions our next challenge is addressing the concerns of students who have suffered emotionally and physically severely impacting their mental health and ultimately their academic performance I hope to help create environment where everyone can feel welcome to share their stories and hardships without having the pressure of feeling you're alone we're here to work on these issues together and to come to a fair community based conclusion that could benefit all personalities perspectives and stories thank you very much. Najee Rodriguez: Just one thing before we hear the next speech, I just have to regulate for five minutes more strictly but you may begin whenever you're ready. Kianna Bingham: my name is Kianna I am a rising senior studying political science and American studies and minoring in Chinese language and economics. although this will be my first year with the UPUA I am no stranger to leadership or advocacy with empathy I served as a mentor for the division of undergraduate studies engage scholars I was on the leadership council for the MRC I was also the historian for the National Council of Negro woman that would also become a two term president for the same organization in addition to my presidency I am also the executive director for the MLK commemoration committee outside of Penn state I have also entered for a congresswoman oh sorry I have also insert for the Congress for me worked on a congressional pink campaign asserted as a project intern for nonprofit organization targeting the homeless population in addressing the issue of food insecurity within the inner city of Philadelphia I am here because I care about changing their constate I have dedicated my college career to fighting for the voices of the unheard and exposing the wrongs of the past in my position I hope to continue to fight for the communities who are often silenced the director of government affairs I hope to encourage his fire more people to come and advocate for themselves at Capitol Hill day, hope to learning grow from other people and their experiences learn from other marginalized communities and works make Penn State feel like a home away from home for everyone and wants to make sure that to be happy and happy valley there isn't a criteria and the goal of happiness is achievable for everyone I hope that when every student comes to Penn State they can grow more than four years and they have in their whole entire lives and they won't feel stunted growth because they feel unseen or unheard I went to help his state create amazing people that we all that we all see this world needs more than ever and I hope that we can do that together. Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much for that speech we are now going to move to Rene Richardson as the nominee for the director of justice and equity.
  • 11. Rene Richardson: Hello everyone, my name is Rene Richardson, I am an accounting student here at Penn State I serve as lion ambassador, a member of transforming education steering committee, and a member of the pep bands I am so grateful for the opportunity to be back in another year in the UPUA serving our student body I am excited to be able to get a full semester of work in this position as when I was confirmed last spring in March it was right before the administration switch so I couldn't get much of the work I planned to do done so I'm very excited to start with this full fall and really get word going I want to work collaboratively with everyone within the UPUA as director of justice and equity most importantly working coherently with the committee on justice and equity already meeting with the chair we plan on ensuring that the members of the department are supportive to the representatives and they're also likewise the reps are supportive to our department we want this to be a working team that can rely on each other my experience with working with the office of educational equity and having mentors are able to aid me in equity work at Penn State will help me with this role but I also want you to know that having a team as well versed in all aspects of justice and equity will be the most impactful for success so my goals for this semester is too alongside Erin, Najee, and Sarah to create roles within the department that aligned with the committees initiative tracking form this will mean that our roles will cater towards gender equity and disabilities racial justice and so on so it will strengthen the collaboration as representatives if they're working on a certain resolution can reach out to someone within our department I also plan on attending committee meetings so I can report back to representatives needs to my department and the executive branch meetings so in the end I believe that success will come from good communication and collaboration this year I’m so excited to see all the work you all do I do. Najee Rodriguez: thank you Rene, we will now move to cade miller who is running for the director of student life. Cade Miller: Hi, my name is Cade Miller, I am a second year student, studying broadcast journalism and I'm from Inwood, WV first of all thank you for my nomination would say my “why” for this director position is because I'm an orientation leader this year virtually of course and we did extensive training with the title IX office and the office and the caps office and we are very we teach the students on what resources they can use in whichever reason they would need to so I would say this is a great thing for students to know we do tell about orientation but I can assure like many of students we don't really pay attention during orientation but we can always advocate for other offices that are necessary these are uncomfortable conversations especially with the title IX office but is a necessary conversation with that there's also with the safety we can advocate for on campus safety as a committee we can also inform students of involvement on campus with other organizations who are looking for students to be involved and of course that we can be a great advocate for them as the student government but yeah that's pretty much all I need to say thank you everybody for listening. Najee Rodriguez: thank you so much, I appreciate all of your responses. I will now move into questions for the nominees. Are there any questions? Samantha Browne: my question is directed at Cade could you just tell me a little bit more about how your own personal passions align with the student life committee?
  • 12. Cade Miller: Yes, so I went into orientation thing was just helping to build my resume but I actually fell in love with it it's awesome to teach new students first of all how to be a great Penn state when they're first joining the school but also just teaching how to be a great student all around so I think that I we add orientation we talk about involvement right from the start and I always see I loved seeing when new students instantly find something that they're enjoy and what they want to be involved with I also like sharing the resources that Penn State has we all know as student representatives there are a lot of resources at Penn State but we don't know every single one and it's just it encourages me to know that Penn State there are so many things that Penn State has that students can use and I just think that's awesome and to be honest I'm just an absolute Penn State maniac and so when we when we share these opportunities for students it's just it's I think it's amazing. Najee Rodriguez: thank you, are there any more questions? Lakyn Meeder: everyone my question is joes as director how would you guys ensure that there is seamless communication between the committees that you will be directing to the legislative branch and the executive branch? Najee Rodriguez: we can answer this in order. Robert Grots: so I believe that we are all students together, all her to assist together, and all part of this process together and the best is to encourage each other as much as possible at all times and that's why I'm making sure that everyone's voices are heard and no matter what the discussion this question maybe it impact it can impact the majority of the student body and I believe that without the proper perspective there isn't proper communication people would feel left out and I'll be there to strengthen that. Kianna Bingham: I think personally in my other roles I've learned that if we like each other we talk a lot more to each other and we can help each other a lot more that way so just kind of creating a positive team working environment that you feel comfortable to use your voice say something to me if you don't agree with something that I said if you feel like something I said was offensive I feel like you said was offensive uhm we can just come together and talk about that I feel so that's the best way to communicate we actually know the people that you're around so I'm super excited to be back in person I feel as though having I don't know how comfortable people are or what's the plans but just having in person meetings can definitely shrink communication because I know personally not to do it purposely but I look at my phone and I see the message and then I don't respond and I know they have this on me a lot in my leadership rules so I just think that us seeing each other in person getting lunch in the hub could possibly increase communication just liking each other honestly would be the best way to go. Rene Richardson: I believe that in order to strengthen communications and teamwork in a group it's really important to get people that actually like each other and also want to work with each other so I really want this year for my departments are really become friends cause when they become friends you work hard you work Better Together and I think that's a really important thing because we're doing work for the student body but we also want to be friends with each other we want to get to know each other and make friends along the way so I think there will be an important way of getting people to work together and collaborate another thing I also want to
  • 13. emphasize is that in terms of communication and such I really want this department to be open doors I really want anyone to just if you have any concerns questions come to me and I’ll have meetings with them weekly and our department meetings will be biweekly so allow them to be able to come to me anytime they have any issues or concerns so it will allow it to be really open and transparent. Cade Miller: I’m going to hop on the team building bandwagon as well I do think a team works better when they know each other the communication should be open yet honest to anyone that is involved with the committee but also with Penn state's student life and student affairs we can work closely with their offices with them and then once we work with them, we can work with our committee and then go. Najee Rodriguez: ok thank you, are there any further questions for the candidates seeing none I will go ahead and load the GroupMe into the chat I will ask that you all join this group me and once you do join to please just inform us in the chat I am sending the link now and this is for us to let you know if you've been on earlier whenever the discussion is over and whenever president boas has finished her explanation so please join that group me whenever you get a chance and we can continue on OK thank you as soon as you give us confirmation that you're in thank you Robert you may leave the zoom thank you Cade and then we will inform you… congratulations to the new director of academic affairs Robert Grots you have been confirmed with a vote of 26- 2-0. congratulations to the new director of governmental affairs Kianna Bingham you have been confirmed with a vote of unanimous. congratulations to Rane Richardson the newly confirmed director of justice and equity you've been confirmed with the unanimous vote and congratulations to cade miller the new director of student life you have been confirmed with a vote of 27-1-0. congratulations to all of you and I know we cannot wait to see the work that you. Item D the confirmation of the at large representatives Nora O'Toole and Nina Sampogne you will each have 5 minutes to speak about your qualifications and your experience in this realm and then we will have time for questions we will go into control orders starting with Nora O'Toole and then we will move that way. Nora O’Toole: I am a rising sophomore double majoring in cybersecurity and an actual politics with a focus on national security and I'm currently involved with the presidential leadership Academy and have worked on many campaigns in the past so reaching out and connecting to people on both professional and personal level something on very familiar with I am also currently working under the human language technologies lab researching phishing scam emails under the Big Ten schools as well as building a privacy lock corpus that includes jurisdictions from over 180 countries and having the opportunity to work under research lab and have an internship this past summer is also really helped me only my communication skills as well when it comes to organizing and getting ideas across if confirmed as an at large representative my first primary initiative would be to start addressing the issue of the black representation across the different groups of students at Penn State we need to go to the marginalized students directly include them in on conversations and efforts to make Penn State more equitable inclusive and diverse otherwise our target audience wouldn't be reached in our message will get lost with this first initiative I'd also like to work with multicultural community did not only collaborate and address the lack of diversity but also encourage students to run for seats to have a better representation within the UPUA I acknowledge that I come from a place of privilege where I
  • 14. speak of slack representation yet do not have to feel effects so I'll care for intention and meaning in regards to my actions and words when it comes to my place of privilege to help other marginalized students another initiative that I'd love to accomplish given the opportunity is voter registration and marginalized student groups of students at Penn State who lack access to some of the UPUA programs offered and left at a disadvantage without going directly to those students the opportunities those programs offer or not felt by the students who would benefit the most from having them we need to start looking at some of UPS programs and recognize where we may be missing the target audience and see where we keep them to approve our outreach efforts that are all students at Penn State especially those marginalized students who typically get left behind thank you for your attention and I will be taking the consideration for position. Najee Rodriguez: thank you, we will now move on to Nina Sampogne. Nina Sampogne: I am a rising sophomore I am a major in biology on the pre Med track with a minor in forensic science something that I really love about this program is just the ability to reach others in this previous year I have served as the vice president of the polices residents association and I just fell in love with it even with COVID I was still able to volunteer get my word out there and document a total of 442 hours of community service during a pandemic community service is something that is just a part of who I am and I have served my community the nation and across the world with over 3000 hours of documents and community service throughout my life I've served on the children's advocacy board collegiate council for the very first time that it was ever created and I was also part of the first ever thought on freshmen committee I'm someone that you know believes that community service is so valid and so important and especially in today's world where we are so connected to each other we need to get out there and you know Penn State has such an outreach and I believe that we can truly make a difference which is why I started the first ever child abuse awareness prevention month at Penn State campus this year I've worked diligently with the children's advocacy center and I believe that this is such a valid and important aspect that our community can bring together and just make a difference I have also been a world and conversation facilitator holding dialogue throughout the world encouraging discussions of diversity and inclusion which is something that is just an amazing opportunity to have and I believe that making these conversations with other people is how we you know change our perspectives on the world and are you the rest of my time and I’m just very happy to be here and excited to meet you. Najee Rodriguez: thank you for your responses I appreciate those, and we will now move into questions for either all of the candidates or an individual candidate if you have a question, please raise your hand and I will call on you are there any questions? Samantha Browne: could you both explain one initiative that you'd be really passionate and trying to work on if you were elected to this position? Nora O’Toole: yeah so I'll start up like I mentioned earlier I really would just love I've so over the past year I've had a lot of conversations where there have been students who just don't feel represented and the issue that through to that problem is that they just we don't have representation as much representation in UPUA as I think we can have and so I think we need to go to those groups those multicultural groups of students and like encourage students to run them anyway and just kind of adjust that lack of representation.
  • 15. Nina Sampogne: I’m an ambassador for the stop the silence organization which brings awareness to sexual assault and being not only a Hispanic woman but someone especially so involved with this I believe that we need more representation and more awareness to this topic I have been you know living on the Penn State campus for this first year and there have been 17 sexual assaults even during a pandemic just alone that number is way too high and as the representative for the stop the silence organization at Penn State University I really want to bring more attention to this issue I really think that Penn State could be doing more and we could be doing more as a community to make sure that our students and our friends and our peers are safe. Najee Rodriguez: thank you for those responses, are there any other questions? Speaker Gibbard informed me that all of you are in a group chat, so you do not need to join a GroupMe, she will let you know when you can join the meeting again. Both nominees have just rejoined the call congratulations Nora O’Toole you have been confirmed as an at large representative with a vote of 24-3-1 and congratulations Nina Stampogne you have been confirmed with a vote of 27-0-1. congratulations I cannot wait to see the work you undertake in this assembly. Well now move into the swearing in of the associate justice is the director of public relations the Co-director of first year counsel the director of outreach the director of communications director of academic affairs governmental affairs justice and equity academic affairs at large representatives and our new ISE representative’s president Boas will deliver the oath of office please unmute yourself and juniors and say it and say it along with president Boas. Erin Boas: if you can just unmute yourself and raise your right hand and I'm going to go line by line so just repeat after I speak aa line. “I promise to faithfully uphold the constitution of University Park Undergraduate Association and to defend the rights of each individual student while working towards to betterment of student life. I shall perform to the best of my abilities, the responsibilities and duties that have been entrusted to me by the University Park Undergraduate student body and the virtue to the office in which I hold.” Congratulations all. Najee Rodriguez: congratulations to all of you. We'll now move into line-item F which is bill 216 “Supporting first and advocates and the school supply distribution packs” chair Kallur will you please introduce this. Aarthi Kallur: yeah sorry I don't have it pulled up right here but basically it's the continuation of the school supply pack that we did with Jayne last assembly of we didn't really change much concert like with all the items that we bought and everything so that's pretty much going stay the same and we're hoping to order everything and have them have the bags distributed like during the first couple weeks of school to try to reach as many like freshmen and just new students at Penn State and really just kind of give him a taste of what it does and also support for generation students as well thank you. Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Kallur, are there any questions? Seeing no questions, we will now move into discussion is there any discussion on this bill… Bill 216 “Supporting first and advocates and the school supply distribution packs” passes with a unanimous vote. Into line-item G which is bill 0316 “renewing the subscription for soft edge advocacy tool” chair Meeder will you be presenting this?
  • 16. Lakyn Meeder: yes, OK hey guys, so basically what this bill is doing is renewing like the title says this description for soft edge advocacy tool this is a platform that we've used a bit last year basically what it does is it allows us to pre write up a message that we would want to send to those typically legislators and we can't be tried who encouraged the student body to sign onto it they input their name and their address and it'll send whatever letter we've pre typed to their legislators but we can also target it to send to really anybody dead letters to the board of trustees we could send letters to faculty if we ever needed to it also has the ability to track legislation really easily which is helpful for a lot of the work that we do in Gov affairs it's essentially just a writing a letter writing campaign that students are able to do remotely in the past letter writing campaigns haven't been all that successful so this just makes it more accessible to all students uhm the overall use of it last year in terms of the student body using it wasn't as large as we would have expected or that we had hoped but we think that with the Department of Public relations this year will have easier access to reach out to students and get this have them gain attention for it & on to the campaigns so this bill is requesting $2700 to fund the subscription and yeah I can stand for any questions. Najee Rodriguez: thank you chair Meeder, are there any questions? seeing no questions for chair Meeder will now close the floor on questions and will move into discussion… bill 0316 “renewing the subscription for soft edge advocacy tool” passes with the vote of 33-0-0 congratulations we will now move into line-item H resolution 0516 “continuation of the racial justice roundtable” Aarthi Kallur: I am going to yield my time to representative Loiseau and Zhang. Jeannelle Loiseau: um obviously this is the continuation of the racial justice roundtable this was first brought into the 15th assembly of upua and that was brought up due to the black lives matters movement and the kind of George Floyd so this was brought up through justice and equity last year because there was summer assemblies a racial justice roundtable was held during the summer and there's two different sessions about the same topic this year there's a we're going to have multiple roundtables about different types of races and holidays and will be held on holidays such as during Black History Month indigenous peoples day Hispanic heritage month Asian heritage month etc. this is like a really great opportunity for people of minorities to come together and express their either comments or concerns relating to like either the university's handling of these types of situations like the zoom bombings that did happen last year and recently the removal of the federal Castro quote from the peaked and this will cover all different types of ground since we will be doing it on different types of holidays and I’ll yield my time to representee Zhang if he wants to add anything. Steven Zhang: I just wanted to I guess continue to speak in support of the roundtable and the idea that the primary goal is to make sure that communities of color are able to have a place to connect with other organizations as well as the UPUA and just have spaces to voice it concerns in a forum where everyone can have representation and everyone is brought into the same room I think oftentimes university doesn't not have ample space for people of color to really express their concerns or advocate as a group in a lot of the owners does end up falling on
  • 17. students so I think it's an imperative that the student government also assists in bringing those teams together. Najee Rodriguez: thank you we will now move into questions are there any questions for represented representatives also or Zhang if so, please raise your hand and I will call on you are seeing none I will now close the floor for questions and will move into discussion…bill 0516 “continuation of the racial justice roundtable” passes unanimously. Jordan Zaia: a good summary has so far and I want to thank everyone for supporting the confirmation of the other justices over the past two assembly meetings just some updates we released for this policy decisions just based on the ones that were that came about at the end of the spring semester they were all five to oh decisions and that's cause there were only five justices up until today and further along with that we're going to be placing some more applications up on the UPUA website for more clerk positions so those should be coming sometime in like August and uh yeah other than that if anyone has any questions feel free to shoot them over. Najee Rodriguez: thank you, are there any questions if so, please raise your hand I will call on you. Seeing none we will now move on to reports from the chief of staff and the executive directors if they have any if you all could please raise your hand to be called on and if you do have reports I would highly appreciate that. chief of staff Jordan Sarah Jordan: all of our directors who were confirmed tonight I'm very excited to work with all of you on this next assembly are executive department has been very busy this summer doing late interviews as well as getting set up for the school year and this semester to begin we had our first cabinet meeting on Monday it was very productive so I can't wait for the like branches to work together this year with initiatives I'm working on all the teams channels the last few weeks so if you haven't been on teams recently or you need help navigating it just shoot me a text or email me I'll make another meet to go through it or I can just kind of walk you through it via text but you should all be in there and new directors I will be adding you in after this meeting for office Skype will be returning to that in the fall came to see you all in the office for those you haven't been in the office yet it's a great time to meet people and get initiatives and everything done so I'll be getting I'll be adding all of your swipes you can all access that when you get back cool and then if you haven't done so already please fill out the contact sheet that has been sent in numerous emails if you can't find it by any chance again text me or Erin and we can send that over to you one last thing I know people are starting to book rooms. if you are please let me know beforehand so I can kind of walk you through the website process it can be a little bit confusing and wordy so if you need me to do it for you and just send the information over, I can totally do that but as always, I’m here for you all. Najee Rodriguez: are there any questions for the chief of staff Jordan if so, please raise your hand and I will call on you seeing no questions are there any further reports by any executive directors sing none we will now he reports by speaker Gibbard.
  • 18. Sydney Gibbard: going to go through a few and most important things one is we have created also I apologize in advance if my Wi-Fi is really bad I'm in Canada all right so first of all the UPA calendar has been created I've sent it out in an email a few different times it's also in the agenda in my report how to get that onto your computer end how to link it to your outlook so please do that so you have like all the UPA calendar events on your calendar secondly the most important thing is the way drive I just sent a link to it in the chat please bookmark it because you're going to be using it throughout the entire year it has all of your committee drives in there all of the initiatives in there any resources you could possibly need including bill resolution policy templates and stuff so definitely go and bookmark that drive up next we're currently working on developing programming time line which is really exciting so I'm hoping to actually get that information out to you as soon as possible just so you have an overview of what the year is going to look like what kind of programs you puree does if you're a new Rep and when you do them sorry everyone pauses every once in a while with my Wi-Fi next former speaker Zhang and I have been working on establishing plans for Idi training which is really exciting and I think it's going to be a really great addition to the UPUA up so you can hear more you're going to hear more about that within the coming months but I just wanted to let you know that that's on your horizon and I want you to know that like got something that's going to be coming to you UPUA Rep specifically within the next month or two all so this is really important we're establishing a policy working group to oversee UPUA representation and statements and also internal accountability so I'll be kind of examining our policies on public statements AKA who can release them who can sign on to them who should approve them and also will be looking into our policies on censure and the strike system which not a lot of people even know that is included in the UPUA bylaws or constitution and it's very vague about when to use that so I'll definitely need some help and input from all branches on that front to make that happen so be on the lookout for some information on the working group and then the next most important thing is that in the coming weeks we're hoping to release a UPUA wide survey I've talked to Barry about this and we're going to clarify a little bit more within the coming weeks about asking people to optionally within the org said and anonymously upload their vaccination information just so that we know kind of in the organization what percentage of people are vaccinated I think that that will make people feel a lot more comfortable going into rooms and we during UPUA activities again it will be anonymous and optional but I will highly recommend that you get involved in that and that way we're just kind of making educated decisions for the organization finally I'll be on boarding all the new reps so make sure you text them and say hello once they're added to the contact sheet imagine how stressed if you were when you join your UPUA and I know it's like a very overwhelming organization so feel free come in just insert yourself.
