SB 4.8.41
dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣākhyaṁ
yah icchet shreya ātmanaḥ
ekaṁ hy eva hareh tatra
kāraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam
Translation:
Any person who desires the fruits of the four principles
religiosity, economic development, sense gratification and, at
the end, liberation, should engage himself in the devotional
service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for worship of
His lotus feet yields the fulfillment of all of these.
SB 4.8.59-60
Anyone who thus engages in the devotional service of the Lord,
seriously and sincerely, with his mind, words and body, and who
is fixed in the activities of the prescribed devotional methods, is
blessed by the Lord according to his desire. If a devotee desires
material religiosity, economic development, sense gratification
or liberation from the material world, he is awarded these
results.
If I choose path of bhakti, do I loose my

WHAT IS PRAYOJANA OF LIFE?
WHAT IS HIGHER PERFECTION OF LIFE?
एतावानेव लोके ऽस्मिन् पुंसाुं नन:श्रेयसोदय: ।
तीव्रेण भस्ततयोगेन िनो िय्यर्पितुं स्मिरि ् ॥
४४ ॥
etāvān eva loke ’smin
puṁsāṁ niḥśreyasodayaḥ
tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena
mano mayy arpitaṁ sthiram
Therefore persons whose minds are
fixed on the Lord engage in the
intensive practice of devotional
service. That is the only means for
attainment of the final PERFECTION OF
LIFE.

जन्िलाभ: पर: पुंसािन्ते नारायणमिृनत:

nature of passion.
And that happiness which is
blind to self-realization,
which is delusion from
beginning to end and which
arises from sleep, laziness
and illusion is said to be of
the nature of ignorance
यत्रोपरमते चित्तं
निरुद्धं योगसेवया |
यत्र िैवात्मिात्मािं
पश्यन्िात्मनि तुष्यनत || 20||

BG 6.20: When the mind,
restrained from material
activities, becomes still by the
practice of Yoga, then the yogi is
able to behold the soul through
the purified mind, and he
rejoices in the inner joy.

आगिापानयनोऽननत्या
मताुंस्मतनतक्षमव भारत || 14||
BG 2.14: O son of Kunti, the contact
between the senses and the sense objects
gives rise to fleeting perceptions of
happiness and distress. These are non-
permanent, and come and go like the
winter and summer seasons. O
descendent of Bharat, one must learn to
tolerate them without being disturbed.
सहजुं किि कौन्तेय सदोषिर्प न त्यजेत् |
सवािरम्भा हह दोषेण धूिेनास्ननररवावृता: || 48||
BG 18.48: Every endeavor is covered by
some sort of fault, just as fire is covered
by smoke. Therefore one should not give
up the work which is born of his nature, O
son of Kunti, even if such work is full of
fault.

• kṛṣṇa-bhakta — niṣkāma, ataeva ‘śānta’ // bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī — sakali ‘aśānta’
• “Because a devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa is desireless, he is peaceful. Fruitive workers desire material enjoyment, jñānīs desire
liberation, and yogīs desire material opulence; therefore they are all lusty and cannot be peaceful.
• Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.1.11)
• anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ // jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam // ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā
• "One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa favorably and without desire for material profit
or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service.“
• Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.1.12
• sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam // tat-paratvena nirmalam hrishikena-hrishikesha // sevanam bhaktir ucyate
• Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the supreme Personality of Godhead,
the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is free
from all material designations, and, simply by being employed in the service of the Lord, one’s senses are purified.
• Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.2.255
• anAsaktasya visyAn // yathArham upayunjatah // nirbandhah krshna-sambandhe // yuktam vairägyam ucyate
• When one is not attached to anything but at the same time accepts anything in relation to Krsna, one is rightly situated
above possessiveness.
 BG 18.3: Some learned people declare that all kinds of actions should be given up as evil, while others maintain that
acts of sacrifice, charity, and penance should never be abandoned.
 BG 18.7: Prescribed duties should never be renounced. Such deluded renunciation is said to be in the mode of
ignorance.
 18.45-46 - sva-karmana abhyacarya siddhim vindati – man can attain perfection through performing his own work
 SB 11.18.44 mam sva-dharmena bhajet – one should worship me by his own duties/dharma
 18.47=3.35 - shreyan sva-dharma vigunaH..na apnoti kilbisham – better to do your duty imperfectly than someone
else’s, so you will not get sinful reactions
 BG 18.48 - saha-jaḿ karma kaunteya sa-doṣam api na tyajet - Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is
covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kunti, even if such work is
full of fault.
 2.31 – sva-dharma..na vikampitum – do not hesitate to fulfill your duties
 BG 3.9: yajna-arthat karma - Work must be done as a yajña (sacrifice) to the Supreme Lord; otherwise, work causes
bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties, without being attached to
the results, for the satisfaction of God.

  • 6. DHARMA ARTHA KAMA MOKSHA SB 4.8.41 dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣākhyaṁ yah icchet shreya ātmanaḥ ekaṁ hy eva hareh tatra kāraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam Translation: Any person who desires the fruits of the four principles religiosity, economic development, sense gratification and, at the end, liberation, should engage himself in the devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for worship of His lotus feet yields the fulfillment of all of these. SB 4.8.59-60 Anyone who thus engages in the devotional service of the Lord, seriously and sincerely, with his mind, words and body, and who is fixed in the activities of the prescribed devotional methods, is blessed by the Lord according to his desire. If a devotee desires material religiosity, economic development, sense gratification or liberation from the material world, he is awarded these results. If I choose path of bhakti, do I loose my Purusha-arthas? BG 9.22 yoga-kshemam vahami aham - I provide what they lack and preserve what they already possess.   • 7. WHAT IS PRAYOJANA OF LIFE? WHAT IS HIGHER PERFECTION OF LIFE?
  • 8. एतावानेव लोके ऽस्मिन् पुंसाुं नन:श्रेयसोदय: । तीव्रेण भस्ततयोगेन िनो िय्यर्पितुं स्मिरि ् ॥ ४४ ॥ etāvān eva loke ’smin puṁsāṁ niḥśreyasodayaḥ tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena mano mayy arpitaṁ sthiram Therefore persons whose minds are fixed on the Lord engage in the intensive practice of devotional service. That is the only means for attainment of the final PERFECTION OF LIFE. SB 3.25.44 एतावान् साुंख्ययोगाभयाुं मवधििपररननष्ठया । जन्िलाभ: पर: पुंसािन्ते नारायणमिृनत: ॥ ६ ॥ etāvān sāṅkhya-yogābhyāṁ sva-dharma-pariniṣṭhayā janma-lābhaḥ paraḥ puṁsām ante nārāyaṇa-smṛtiḥ The HIGHEST PERFECTION OF HUMAN LIFE, achieved either by complete knowledge of matter and spirit, by practice of mystic powers, or by perfect discharge of occupational duty, is TO REMEMBER THE PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD at the end of life.   • 10.  HAPPINESS - FEELING OF INNER SATISFACTION  SUCCESS - INTEGRITY IN THE FRAMEWORK OF SOCIAL AND PERSONAL MISSION  PURPOSE/MISSION - THE MAIN TASK OF CREATING YOURSELF IN HARMONY WITH THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL WORLD  HARMONY = HAPPINESS + SUCCESS  ECOLOGY OF SUCCESS - WHEN SUCCESS IS NOT MY, BUT EVERY ONE’S  WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BE HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL?  KNOWLEDGE  DESIRE TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND HAPPY  REALIZE MISSION/PURPOSE = HAPPINESS + SUCCESS = HARMONY
  • 11. That which in the beginning may be just like poison but at the end is just like nectar and which awakens one to self-realization is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness. That happiness which is derived from contact of the senses with their objects and which appears like nectar at first but poison at the end is said to be of the nature of passion. And that happiness which is blind to self-realization, which is delusion from beginning to end and which arises from sleep, laziness and illusion is said to be of the nature of ignorance यत्रोपरमते चित्तं निरुद्धं योगसेवया | यत्र िैवात्मिात्मािं पश्यन्िात्मनि तुष्यनत || 20|| …ātmani tuṣhyati BG 6.20: When the mind, restrained from material activities, becomes still by the practice of Yoga, then the yogi is able to behold the soul through the purified mind, and he rejoices in the inner joy.
  • 12. िात्रामपर्ािमत कौन्तेय र्ीतोष्णसखद: खदा: | आगिापानयनोऽननत्या मताुंस्मतनतक्षमव भारत || 14|| BG 2.14: O son of Kunti, the contact between the senses and the sense objects gives rise to fleeting perceptions of happiness and distress. These are non- permanent, and come and go like the winter and summer seasons. O descendent of Bharat, one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed. सहजुं किि कौन्तेय सदोषिर्प न त्यजेत् | सवािरम्भा हह दोषेण धूिेनास्ननररवावृता: || 48|| BG 18.48: Every endeavor is covered by some sort of fault, just as fire is covered by smoke.   • 14. योगस्थ: कु रु कमााणि सङ्गं त्यक्तत्वा धिञ्जय | ससद््यससद््यो: समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते || 48|| BG 2.48: Be steadfast in the performance of your duty, O Arjun, abandoning attachment to success and failure. Such equanimity is called Yoga. यदृच्छा लाभ सन्तुष्टो द्वन्द्वातीतो ववमत्सर: | सम: ससद्धावससद्धौ ि कृ त्वावप ि निब्यते || 22|| BG 4.22: Content with whatever gain comes of its own accord, and free from envy, they are beyond the dualities of life. Being equipoised in success and failure, they are not bound by their actions, even while performing all kinds of activities. अभ्यासेऽप्यसमथोऽसस मत्कमापरमो भव | मदथामवप कमााणि कु वान्न्सद्चधमवाप्स्यसस || 10|| BG 12.10: If you cannot practice remembering Me with devotion, then just try to work for Me. Thus performing devotional service to Me, you shall achieve the stage of perfection.
  • 16. • CC Madhya 19.149 • kṛṣṇa-bhakta — niṣkāma, ataeva ‘śānta’ // bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kāmī — sakali ‘aśānta’ • “Because a devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa is desireless, he is peaceful. Fruitive workers desire material enjoyment, jñānīs desire liberation, and yogīs desire material opulence; therefore they are all lusty and cannot be peaceful. • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.1.11) • anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ // jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam // ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā • "One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service.“ • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.1.12 • sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam // tat-paratvena nirmalam hrishikena-hrishikesha // sevanam bhaktir ucyate • Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is free from all material designations, and, simply by being employed in the service of the Lord, one’s senses are purified. • Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 1.2.255 • anAsaktasya visyAn // yathArham upayunjatah // nirbandhah krshna-sambandhe // yuktam vairägyam ucyate • When one is not attached to anything but at the same time accepts anything in relation to Krsna, one is rightly situated above possessiveness.
  • 17.  BG 18.3: Some learned people declare that all kinds of actions should be given up as evil, while others maintain that acts of sacrifice, charity, and penance should never be abandoned.  BG 18.7: Prescribed duties should never be renounced. Such deluded renunciation is said to be in the mode of ignorance.  18.45-46 - sva-karmana abhyacarya siddhim vindati – man can attain perfection through performing his own work  SB 11.18.44 mam sva-dharmena bhajet – one should worship me by his own duties/dharma  18.47=3.35 - shreyan sva-dharma vigunaH..na apnoti kilbisham – better to do your duty imperfectly than someone else’s, so you will not get sinful reactions  BG 18.48 - saha-jaḿ karma kaunteya sa-doṣam api na tyajet - Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kunti, even if such work is full of fault.  2.31 – sva-dharma..na vikampitum – do not hesitate to fulfill your duties  BG 3.9: yajna-arthat karma - Work must be done as a yajña (sacrifice) to the Supreme Lord; otherwise, work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties, without being attached to the results, for the satisfaction of God.
