Rheumatic fever is a multisystem disorder that can occur as a consequence of untreated pharyngeal streptococcal infection. It develops in approximately 3% of individuals 2-3 weeks following a streptococcal infection. Rheumatic fever is diagnosed based on the updated Jones criteria, which requires two major criteria or one major and two minor criteria, along with evidence of a previous streptococcal infection. Major criteria include polyarthritis, carditis, chorea, subcutaneous nodules, and erythema marginatum. Minor criteria include fever, arthralgia, elevated acute phase reactants, prolonged PR interval, and leukocytosis.
