How To
Create Strong
Passwords
(that are easy to remember!)
How To Create Strong Passwords
It's easy to protect our
accounts with just a few
basic steps – strong
passwords don't have to
be hard to remember!
Passwords are the keys to our online lives.
Whether it's email, social media, a bank account, or an
online shop, our online accounts are valuable to us - and
to criminals.
What Makes A Strong Password?
The best passwords are:
• At least 8 characters long
• Random and difficult to guess
• Not re-used across different websites
Oh, and they should be easy to remember too.
Sounds impossible? Read on.
What Is An Example Of A Weak Password?
Weak passwords include:
• Anything less than 8 characters
• Any word found in a dictionary
• A keyboard pattern (eg “abc123”)
• Names (eg people, places, things)
• Dates
To understand why these make weak passwords, see our
in-depth guide:
https://www.becybersafe.com/how-passwords-get-cracked
You should avoid any common passwords too - hackers
will try the top 10,000 on your account!

Some of the most commonly used passwords today are:*
* We know what these are due to previous website hacks
What Is An Example Of A Weak Password?
So How Can We Create Strong Passwords?
We have 12 great ideas coming up
But first…..
Have you thought about using a
Password Manager?
• Create super-secure passwords
• Remember every password for you
• Automatically log you in to websites
• Sync to your phone & computer
Password Managers
In short, they take away all the stress of passwords!
These great tools will:
They also make your passwords unique for every website.
Password Managers
For more information on
password managers,
including which ones we
recommend, see our guide at:
www.becybersafe.com/password-managers
Ideas For Creating
Strong New Passwords
Idea 1 - Choose 4 Random Words
• 3 or 4 random words make for a really strong password.
• Eg remember: "I live in Leeds, and walk past
a cafe on the way to work"
LeedsWalkCafeWork
• Eg remember: " Seattle is the birthplace of
Amazon, Starbucks, and Boeing”
SeattleBooksCoffeePlanes
• The words should be random and not a regular sentence.
• Examples of good passwords - and how to remember them:
Idea 2 - Use An Entire Phrase
• How about a phrase instead?
I catch the no. 47 bus 2 work
Myboysareinthelocalfootballteam!
Pizzas taste nicer with pepperoni
ILike2SkiInMeribel
FriendsWasTheBestTVShowEver
• The longer the better, and make sure it’s nothing obvious
or common.
Idea 3 - Create An Acronym
• Save typing effort by turning a phrase into an acronym!
05wtyIbmfh!
• From: 05 was the year I bought my first house!
P!Tdh2bd2r
• From: Passwords! They don't have to be difficult
to remember
IoaVW,wa52p
• From: I own a VolksWagen, with a 52 plate
• Make sure to avoid using any common phrases, quotes, or
song lyrics.
Idea 4 - Use The Keyboard
• Disguise your password by using the layout of the keyboard.
Iwj4Fuw5p94
• From: "JaneCharlie“
(eg start by picking your children's names)
• Use the keys that lie above and to the right of the letters
of your password on the keyboard.
• Try different rules, such as using letters to the left or right.
• Be careful if travelling or using a phone as keyboards vary.
Idea 5 - Use A Deliberate Misspelling
• Badly misspelt words can make a strong password, if careful.
KryingTeers2Nite
DubbleTrubbleBubble
ILykeCheezBurgurs
• Be very careful as the password lists that hackers use
include common misspellings (eg 'acommodate'),
• Try typing words as they sound, such as:
• The more obscure you can make it, the better.
Idea 6 - Create A Formula
• Formulae can be easy to remember for some people.
Dog+Cat=8legs
Children+Xmas=Excitement
2Weeks=14Days
1947-1943=Four
OneCarHas4Wheels
• These passwords can be very strong as they're often fairly
long and use mathematical symbols.
Ideas for Strengthening
Existing Passwords
If you’ve got a password you like, why
not keep it but just strengthen it?
Idea 7 - Add Spaces Or Brackets
• This really strengthens passwords – it adds symbols,
makes your password longer, and breaks up whole
words.
• How about splitting up your current password with spaces
or brackets?
• Was: Bristol98
• Now: Bri sto l98
• Was: SeattleHuskys
• Now: SeattleH(us}kys
• Maybe go wild and mix different brackets too – [ ) { ] ( }
Idea 8 - Add A Random Word
• Adding a new word will also make your password stronger
by making it longer.
• Even better if that random word is unusual or misspelt.
• Was: Sarah1974
• Now: Sarah1974Danyul
• Was: LetMeIn
• Now: LetMeInMelburne
Idea 9 - Repetition
• If your password is too short or easy to crack then one of
the easiest ways to strengthen it is to simply repeat it.
• Was: Sarah1974
• Now: Sarah1974Sarah1974
• Was: apples
• Now: applesapplesapples
• Of course, if your password is too short or weak to begin
with then you may need to make other changes too.
Idea 10 - Turn It Into An Email Address
• A strong yet unusual password is that of an email address.
• It doesn’t even need to be a valid email address (it’s only a
password) - your imagination is the only limit!
• Was: Apples
• Now: me@Apples.amazon
me@Apples.fb
me@Apples.nytimes
• Maybe work the website name in to help make it unique
for every place you use it.
Idea 11 - Swap Letters Around
• If your existing password is made of 2 or more words,
could you swap the first letters of each word around?
• Was: SeattleHuskys
• Now: HeattleSuskys
• Was: TomCruise
• Now: ComTruise
• Be careful not to go from 2 common words to 2 other
common words, eg "LongSocks" to "SongLocks".
Idea 12 - Add Other Punctuation
• We’ve mentioned adding spaces or brackets but there’s
plenty of other punctuation you can use too.
• Not all websites allow all characters so play around to
find what they do allow.
• Was: SeattleHuskys
• Now: Seattle/Huskys/
• Was: Sarah1974
• Now: Sarah$19.74
• Was: Bristol98
• Now: Bristol+9%8
How To Make Every
Password Different
How To Make Every Password Different
• You should use a different
password on every website.
• Making your passwords unique and
memorable isn’t quite as difficult as
it may sound. Read on for tips!
By re-using passwords, you’ll be giving
hackers the keys to all of your accounts
if just one website gets hacked.
Method 1 – Use A Password Manager
• We’ve mentioned these already – they’re brilliant tools!
• Create super-secure passwords
• Remember every password for you
• Automatically log you in to websites
• Easy to use, password managers will:
• For more information on see our guide at:
www.becybersafe.com/password-managers
• And every password they create for you will be different!
Method 2 – Tweak It With A Rule
• First create a really strong base password – use the
ideas from this presentation.
• Then use a rule to slightly change it for every website.
• Eg - add the first and last letter of the website name
to the end of the password.
• For Amazon: Seattle/Huskys/an
• For Facebook: Seattle/Huskys/fk
• For eBay: Seattle/Huskys/ey
• So for the password: Seattle/Huskys/
Method 3 – Why Bother With A Password?
• For unimportant websites which you rarely log into,
then why even bother trying to think of a password?
• If a website insists on a password but you won’t visit it
again, then hit lots of keys at random (eg "sW@h52rfs").
• If you do ever need to log in
again then just follow the
password reset procedures.
