USB-to-CAN: Hardware specifications
Hardware – Gwentech GT1026
USB
Isolated to 1kV
Charges the tablet or phone during use
Standard D-Sub 9 pin connector (in accordance with CiA® 102)
CAN Compliant to specification 2.0A and 2.0B
Extended operating temperature range of -40 to 85 °C
Timestamps with 125 µs resolution
For use on Android® devices (3.1 and higher)
API available for developing custom apps
Pros
Easy to setup and no configuration needed → The
CAN adapter is plugged in the USB and is identified
as an Android Accessory
Supplies power to the tablet → No need for extra
power supply for the tablet
Cons
There is no security in place, as the physical access
to the adapter allows any intruder access to the CAN
Bus
Platform limitations (only works as an Android
Accessory), therefore an Android device is needed for
the communication
Physical access to the adapter needed to reset it in
case that the connection hangs (by removing the USB
cable and connecting it again to the tablet)
The micro-USB connector is not ideal for systems
with a lot of vibrations (it can get damaged with time
and will not work properly)

Bluetooth-to-CAN: Hardware specifications
Hardware – Case C2BT2
Wireless transmission of CAN-Bus data via Bluetooth® Class 2
Usage of the common Serial Port Profiles (SPP)
Implements CAN V2.0B
Programmable standard CAN-Bus data rates up to 1 Mb/s
Supports Standard- and Extended frames (11-bit and 29-bit Identifier).
Receive buffers, masks and filters:
Two receive buffers with prioritized message storage
Two 29-bit filters
Two 29-bit masks
Transmission of timestamp (16bit Timer)
Selectable Echo Function
9-pin D-Sub Connector for CAN Connectivity
Integrated Bluetooth Antennae
Extended operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C
Pros
Improved security due to the PIN paring compared
to the USB-to-CAN solution
No need to physically access the connector, which
can be installed anywhere (range up to 15m)
Supports any client that has Bluetooth capabilities
(iOS, Windows Mobile, Android)
Cons
Additional security needs to be implemented for the
communication, as PIN paring is not enough
Extra development needed for the Bluetooth
communication & security
Not suited for time critical communication (60ms
delays for CAN message)
Extra power supply for the tablet needed

CAN messages
No need to physically access the connector, which
can be installed anywhere (range up to 100m)
Supports any client that has Wi-Fi capabilities (iOS,
Windows Mobile, Android)
Cons
Wi-Fi settings need to be hardcoded to the tablet
hotspot
The tablet needs to create the HOTSPOT so that the
commands received from the cloud on 3G/LTE can
reach it
Security risk for the Wi-Fi to be accessed by
unwanted parties
Communication in the same WLAN is not encrypted
(HTTP)
Not suited for time critical communication
Extra power supply for the tablet needed
