1 Introduction
• The SBI colony is the staff quarters
• SBI and RailTel have decided to give high performance Internet
service at SBI colony, Nerul
• RailTel is bringing Internet using OFC to SBI colony to ensure high
quality and high speed Internet services
2 Objective
 To provide minimum of 2Mbps Internet services to every customer.
◦ Intra Building Distribution is through fast Ethernet ( 100 Mbps )
network and Gigabit back bone network interconnecting various
buildings. This is to ensure no limitation for expansion
 To provide Internet service followed by various broadband based
applications and services
3 Apartment Complex - Solution
 All apartment customers are direct customers of ISP. Every customer has
their own account, with their choice of tariff plan. ISP can provide multi-level
services to their customer as per the tariff plan.
 All network elements are all ruggedised units, which will withstand against
salty weather, temperature, humidity, dust etc.
 Centralized management and monitoring of all network elements is a key
feature
 Automatic, 24 x 7 monitoring by Network Monitoring System (NMS) detects
any fault occurs and the maintenance staff will get to know immediately and

action will be taken, may be,even before the user notice the problem.
 With fast / gigabit link per apartment complex, ISP can guarantee 1 / 2 / 4 /
10 Mbps or more speed per active customer
A centralized Element Management System (EMS) and Network Monitoring System
(NMS) will be installed. All network elements, EMS, NMS and CPEs to have
public / private fixed IP addresses. With this arrangement all the network elements
and CPEs can be configured from the central location and 24 x 7 monitoring
automatically for maintenance purpose will be done.
As per DOT guidelines, the Wi-Fi device addition at apartments should be done in
centralised manner. For this a Customer Self Care System (CSCS) is provided.
With this the customer can request for new device addition / deletion to the CSCS
web portal. The CSCS will configure the Wi-Fi routers and keep the record. The
customer will also get a SMS for security purpose.

3.1 At Apartment Complex

The Apartment complex consists of 2 parts
1. Backbone network for all building
2. Floor and apartment level distribution

3.2 Backbone Network
Backbone network distribution is such that number of hops is minimal for all the
customers. The Internet received from Railtel is distributed using ICD. Then all
buildings, using IBD with Power Over Ethernet (POE) distributes the broadband to
every floor. The distribution network has centralised power for all ICD, IBD and
IFD.
Depending upon the distance between 2 building, within the complex, a CAT6e
cable or Optical Fiber (OFC) cable will be used for interconnection.
3.3 Floor and Apartment Level Distribution
IFDs are used to distribute within the floors. The IFD is a ruggedised unit with
power coming from the Backbone Network. Hence there is no AC power outlet
needed near to IFD. Hence backbone and distribution network fully works from the
centralised power source in every building.
3.4 Inside Apartment
The Ethernet signal from IFD is compatiple with computer, Laptop and Wi-Fi
routers. Unlike ADSL technology there is no need for a modem. Hence the
customer has full freedom to have their choice of network
• Single computer
◦ The cable from IFD can be directly connected to the Ethernet outlet of the
computer. The user name & password can be programmed in the
computer and Internet will be available at the computer.
• LAN inside the apartment
◦ Either wired or wireless network can be setup by the customer. A router
for wired LAN and Wi-Fi router for wireless LAN need to be used. In both
the cases the user name & password to be programmed at the router.
Now the Internet will be available for all the computers, TABs and smart
phones in the apartment

4 Intra Complex Distributor - ICD
 ICD is the interface for Radio / OFC link from Railtel
 ICD distributes the Internet to multiple Buildings.
 ICD can directly connected to 6 Intra Building Distributors (IBD) located in
every building. Each IBD is cascadable
 ICD is housed along with the Intra Building Distributor
 ICD gets 48V telecom power from IBD, which has battery backup
 ICD provides the power for Radio or Media convertor of OFC
 Hence ICD and Radio / OFC links operate on un-interruptable power

5 Intra Building Distributor – IBD
 Each building has one or many IBD based on number of floors in the building
 IBD is the Internet distributor to all the apartments in one building
 IBD distributes the Internet to multiple floors - To IFD
 IBD can directly connected to 6 IFDs located in every floor.
 IBD is housed along with the Its own 48V Power Unit
 IBD PSU is a Float Cum Boost Charge (FCBC) with 48V battery bank
 IBD provides the power for IFDs
 Hence all network elements operate on un-interruptable power

6 Intra Floor Distributor – IFD
 IFD distributes Internet in every floor to the apartments
 IFD is a wall mount unit, it can be mounted inside the cable ducts
 IFD provides connectivity to 4 / 6 apartments
 IFD is powered by IBD

8 On-site Installation
 A wall / floor mountable rack is used to house:
◦ ICD
◦ IBD + FCBC
◦ Battery bank
 IFD is a wall mount unit, it can be mounted inside the cable ducts
