“I feel a lot more positive. This is
completely different to how I felt
two hours ago – coaching is
powerful stuff!”

Lily Lloyd Flower Shop
Entrepreneur: Jade Upton
Location: Shildon, County Durham
Lily Lloyd flower shop, located on Shildon high street, supplies and arranges flowers for all
occasions.
Jade, who trained and worked as a plasterer for several years, decided she wanted a
complete change in career and after only one year of studying floristry at college, an
opportunity arose that she couldn’t pass up.
Jade said: “I had been working the odd day in my local flower shop, when the owner informed me he wanted to sell up so I would
have been out of work. I knew it was too good an opportunity to let up and decided to make the leap and take over the shop
myself.
“I knew I was jumping in the deep end after only studying floristry for a year but I had always wanted to run my own business and
thought it would push me to become a better florist.”
Be Enterprising is Durham County Council’s Local Enterprise Growth Initiative programme, supported by funding from government
and by £4.12m additional investment from the European Regional Development Fund. It was created to inspire enterprise and
bring about positive and measurable changes in the employment hotspots of County Durham. The Be Enterprising team has a
local community base in the SASDA office, located in Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe.
She added: “Be Enterprising has been great. Their advice on how to go about opening my own business was invaluable. The
£1,000 grant I received also allowed me to get new business cards, create a fresh logo and purchase a new shop front and van
sign, reopening the shop as my own.”
Andrew Wattsford, Jade’s Be Enterprising coach, said: “We were happy to give Jade the advice and support she needed to
achieve what she has always wanted. Go getters like Jade are the kind of people we strive to help, sometimes they just need a
little nudge in the right direction to get started.”
Jade added: “I currently have a couple of ladies that come in and help me out when I’m busy, but I would like to take on
somebody part time and train them up in the next year, giving them the same start as I had.”
