Grand re-opening of Villard Cousins Subs store highlights great strides made by local
restaurant chain, strengthens business corridor
Menomonee Falls (Nov. 12, 2008) — As Bill Specht, co-founder of Cousins
Submarines, Inc., looks back on the last 36 years since founding the company, he recalls
how far the business has come – and grown. The grand reopening of the store on 4134 W.
Villard Ave. on Nov. 21 – the second longest running store in operation – illustrates the
strides Cousins Subs has made.
“When my cousin Jim and I first started, the Villard store contained not only our office,
but also our warehouse and bakery,” he said. “But when we opened that store we knew
we were adding something of value to the neighborhood.”
The newly remodeled store adds more than new jobs and quality food. According to
Howard Snyder, the executive director of the Northwest Side Community Development
Corporation – an organization dedicated to enhancing the standard of living on the
northwest side by improving the business environment.
“Market developers will always drive around to see who’s in the market,” said Snyder.
“When they see well-known, long-lasting brands like Cousins making investments in a
certain market, it sends a signal to others that this is a good place to invest.”
First district Alderman Ashanti Hamilton agrees.
“Villard Avenue is an important commercial district in the city of Milwaukee,” he said.
“This investment really enhances our businesses.”
Incidentally, both Snyder and Alderman Hamilton have connections to Cousins Subs.
“When I moved to Milwaukee from Madison, the first meal I had in this city was at the
Villard Cousins store,” said Snyder. “Having worked in the area for many years now, that
store is probably the number one place I’ve been to have lunch.”

2. Alderman Hamilton worked at the Cousins store at 801 E. Capital Drive during his
undergraduate years before heading to law school at Texas Southern University. He
found it to be a rewarding experience.
“Cousins really trains their employees and gives them the opportunity to move up in the
business,” he said. “They look for talent within their stores and you can learn how to
successfully run a business.”
Hours for the Villard store are Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday through Thursday 10
a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Friday/Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call

About Cousins Subs
Cousins Subs is a regional sub sandwich chain headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis. The tradition
of Cousins Subs started in 1972, when two transplanted cousins from Atlantic City saw the need
for an East-coast style sub shop in their new hometown. They patterned their subs after the
hoagie, grinder, hero and sub sandwiches they enjoyed back East. And with a dedication to
delivering quality subs at affordable prices, they opened their first restaurant. From the start, the
two used bread baked fresh every morning and insisted on using only the finest, freshest
ingredients.
