Everyone thinks they are a good at communication, but... how many times have you been at an event talking to someone you really didn’t want to talk to? Been sold to by someone who didn’t get that you weren’t interested?
These are examples of bad communication and they all have a few things in common; they weren’t efficient and they weren’t effective.
They didn’t go into the communication with the right mindset and the right preparation.
Also, sorry to say it, but your own communications probably suck too. But after this talk you’ll have a leg up on your competition: you’ll know your communication sucks... and you'll know how to fix it.

Editor's Notes
Everyone thinks they are a good at communication, but...
How many times have you been at an event talking to someone you really didn’t want to talk to?
How many times have you been sold to by someone who didn’t get that you weren’t interested?
How many times have you been sat in a presentation and been bored out of your mind as the presenter droned on, reading his slide deck in a monotone voice, never seeming to stop, going on and on without even seeming to breathe? Wishing you were anywhere else in the world other than right there.
These are all examples of bad communication and they all have a few things in common
They weren’t efficient and they weren’t effective
They didn’t go into the communication with the right mindset and the right preparation
We can all recognise bad communication, and yet we have this cognitive dissonance that makes us do the things to others we hate done to ourselves
Sorry to say it, but your own communications probably suck too
We all hate getting those humongous emails that take half an hour to read, but then we start our own email and think to ourselves “I need to make sure they understand everything. I need to make every point I have in my head” And suddenly you’ve spent 2 hours writing the email and got a scroll bar a nanometer thick!
But after this workshop you’ll have a leg up on your competition, you’ll know your communication sucks... and you know how to fix it
A lot of this is about active listening and empathy
Most people think about the other person in the conversation only 5% of the time
If you can up that to only 10% then you’ll be twice as good as everyone else
Let’s take a step back and ask a couple of questions
What is communication
Are we 5 minutes in?
Why do we communicate?
Activity
Think, feel & do
Why “think” and “feel”?
They lead to “do”
Number one rule
What do you want them to TFD?
What comes after?
What comes next?
Are we 10 minutes in?
Feel comes before Think
The first step in successful communication is being able to know, think about and express what you want the recipient to TFD
Okay, so how do we focus on TFD?
Most people start with the beginning
With the problem, for example
People check out and stop listening very quickly
Begin with the end in mind!

Meta activity
What do I want you to think, feel and do after this workshop?
But even when you know what you want to get out of it, you might not know how to get it from the other person
They need to know why it’s in their own best interests
Are we 20 minutes in?
