January 2021 to Present
Creators:
Students at DePaul University
Abstract:
This collection includes oral histories of affiliates of DePaul, which detail their lived experiences

History:
The Coronavirus, Protests, and DePaul Project was created in a 4-credit internship/course, ISP
392: DePaul Documentary Corps, taught by Professor Lisa Dush in 2020. The course was part of
DePaul’s HumanitiesX initiative, and was created as both a creative outlet for students and to
catalogue and preserve DePaul stakeholders’ experiences of 2020. Undergraduate students
enrolled in this course/internship worked with DePaul’s Special Collections and Archives to
4. conduct, process, and edit remote interviews with DePaul students, staff, alumni, and community
partners, on topics including the pandemic and the ongoing struggle for racial justice. The course
was one quarter long, and was taught in both the Winter and Spring of 2021.
Scope and Content:
The Coronavirus, Protests, and DePaul Project collection contains audio recorded interviews of
people affiliated with DePaul University collected and created by DePaul University
undergraduate students formatted as born digital audio-visual materials, along with their
appropriate transcripts, headshot photographs of the interviewees, and highlights stories in digital
audio format for select interviews.

Winter Quarter 2021 Archival Team Brief
In the 2021 winter quarter, students through the DePaul Documentary Corps collected
and archived various stories of DePaul affiliated persons. The Corps was a team of nine students,
one teacher assistant, and one professor. Each student collected and interviewed 2 individuals for
oral histories to be included within this collection. Of the nine students that participated this
quarter, eight identify as female and one male. The Corps recorded the narrators being into these
several categories: DPU category, college, gender, and race. The DPU category refers to the
narrator’s affiliation with DePaul: alumni, student, faculty, staff, community member, and others.
The college category refers to which college in DePaul the person is related to, such as the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The gender options include male, female, nonbinary, and
other/unsure/NA, while the race category was taken directly from the American government
census. It is important to note that if a narrator fit into multiple categories, the one most relevant
to the topic of the interview was used to categorize. Faculty includes tenure-track and contingent
faculty, while staff is those employed by DePaul that are not classroom instructors. Lastly, the
college category pertained to which school within DePaul University the individual was
affiliated with, including an option for others if they are not.
Eighteen interviews are included within this collection, two from each student as
mentioned above. Of the eighteen narrators, seven identified as white, six other/unsure, four
black or African American, and one identifying as Asian. Overwhelming female, fourteen out of
eighteen interviews were female, and the rest male. Within the DPU categories, there were seven
alumni, five students, three staff, two faculty, one unsure/ other, and no independent community
members interviewed. Of the schools within DePaul, thirteen of the narrators were with liberal
arts and sciences, two science and health, two other/ unsure, and one computing and digital
media.
For future contributors, room for improvement may begin with the categories themselves.
Under the DPU category, it may be helpful to include a “no longer affiliated” or “not affiliated”
sub-category. The race category, though the standard American census, should include more
specific categories such as “Latinx/Latina/Latino”. The majority of contributors were white, and
there should be an emphasis on more asian voices being presented. In the first round of
interviews, five out of the nine narrators were White, but once this was highlighted in class, we
saw an increase in diversity. It should be noted the extreme dominance of liberal arts and science
affiliations present within this collection. This is not surprising as most of the students are LAS,
and this is an LAS affiliated project, yet there should be an emphasis on inclusion of other
schools within this project. For example, it may be helpful to require “Interview 1 Assignment”
to be within the School of Communications.
7. Also, there was a not an age demographic included when describing the narrators. That
may be an important distinction when trying to diversify perspectives, especially if the Corps
wanted to expand into parents of DePaul students/community members. Overall, a priority
moving forward would be to keep an eye on inclusion, especially within the schools being
represented.
18 interviewees/narrators:
- 7 identified as white
- 6 identified as other/unsure
- 4 identified as black or African American
- 1 identified as Asian
- 14 out of 18 identified as female
- 4 out of 18 identified as male
