Title: CFD Simulation Analysis of the TRIGA Mark II Reactor

Abstract:
TRIGA reactor, designed by General Atomics, is one of the most widely used
nuclear research reactors in the world. In the framework of the ARCO project,
promoted by INFN, an experimental campaign has been carried out by the Physic
Department of Bicocca University, being aimed at measuring water temperature
inside the core of the TRIGA Mark II reactor of the University of Pavia. The
measurement suggests the presence of reversal flows in the core that could be
attributed to the interaction between natural and forced convection.
In this work, fluid-dynamic characteristics of this reactor are investigated with CFD
techniques using the open source OpenFOAM package. A proper solver has been
developed, for multiregion conjugate heat transfers, in order to take into account the
buoyancy forces for incompressible fluid flows with the Boussinesq approximation.
The reactor has been modelled starting from CAD geometry, from which coarse and
fine mesh options have been generated. Menter's k-ω SST turbulence model has
been selected for both natural and mixed convection.
Simulation results will be provided and discussed related to the turbulence model
and mesh size options.
