2. Humus Sapiens
A solution to independent low cost sanitation facility
adaptable to any climate, geography or culture.
Zero effluent disposal scalable from one to one million
homes.
Certified and tested bioremediation solution with over 15
years of field research.
Award winning Social Technology. Winner of Sustainable
Technological innovation prize by UNESCO and Bank of
Brazil Foundation.
3. Contaminated water is the main factor contributing to ten
thousand children`s deaths every day in the world.
Lack of Sanitation is by far the worst problem affecting human
health.
Humus Sapiens (3.0) was developed in 2001 in Brazil to respond
to the need for a sanitation solution that could be applied in
suburban neighborhoods where water toilets were in place without
connection with treatment facilities.
The final stage of development (HS3.0) is the most effective and
adaptable low cost appropriate technology, scalable to any
climate in any country.
No problem of demand
4. Simplicity and
effectiveness
! The sewage from the household
is directed to a sealed
compartment, designed to work
as an “ecosystem in a box”. The
box provides three stages of
biological digestion. Solids are
digested and taken by the soil
community to become available
nutrients. Water is
evapotranspirated by the plants
in the superior levels. The
output of the system is
BANANAS and organic matter.
! Biological filtration is the most
effective way of dealing with
domestic sewage.
5. 100 % treatment to all
household gray and black
water. Zero effluent disposal.
Contributes to water and food
safety.
Environmentally Safe
100% constructed onsite with
locally available labor and
materials, contributing to local
economies. Ideal to sustainable
development applications.
Social Technology
Lowest cost per unit with
incomparable scalability.
Compounded with other Social
Tech for best housing
affordability in the market.
Low Cost
Triple
bottom
line
6. What is Social Technology?
! Social Technology is a concept developed to meet
the modern requirements of the triple bottom line
on sustainability.
! Promote appropriate solutions without the
constraints of industrial production.
! Such solutions have been developed by all cultures
over centuries of adaptation to communal living.
Now these technologies can be verified and
reproduced effectively.
! STs must meet a sustainability triple bottom line:
! Economics of scale for worldwide application
! Environmentally sound in all aspects
! Socially responsible to the local economies
7. Features
! Minimal space required
(6sqm)
! Outdoor (in most climates)
expandable and duplicable
! Indoor ( in climates with
winters below -1c) 100% of
household water
! No energy required (where
below grade construction
possible)
! Zero Effluent overflow means
never needs emptying
8. Applications
! On new housing developments
! On existing housing developments where
treatment facilities are not meeting demand fro
growth (3/4 of world housing)
! Where there is no effective treatment or as
replacement for obsolete septic systems
! Most housing types (freestanding or townhouse
types)
! Cafés, residential schools, B&Bs, multi unit
developments
! Urban, suburban or rural housing
11. Results
! Thousands of units installed in Brazil,
Mozambique and Angola
! One million self built houses using Social
Technologies with HS 3.0 under
construction
! Only approved technology in Ecovillage
construction in Brazil
! Certified by
