Matthew T. Craig
Matthew T. Craig, 47, husband of Dena
Pauline Valentine Craig, passed away on

cattle shows of various breeds. He was a mentor, advisor, and
“Honorary Show Dad”. He loved contributing to 4-H programs
and FFA; playing advocate for children to get into livestock
and agriculture. He loved teaching junior show kids about
showing cattle and how to care for them. Matt was loved by
so many people; he loved his grandchildren, family, and fellow
cattleman. He knew no strangers and was always willing to
help those in need. He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping at
Cumberland Lake, UK Sports, and was a “Cornhole Champion”.
Matt was known for his quick-witted sense of humor, and he
always rooted for UK and whoever played against Louisville”
In addition to his wife of 6 years and his parents, he is
survived by his children, Mattie Craig (Darryl), Frankfort, Cierra
Owens, Burgin, and Todd (Creona) Craig, Hustonville; his sister,

Dallas Maze
With great sadness, we announce the
unexpected passing of Dallas Maze of
Goreville, Illinois on January 2, 2023. Dallas
was born December 23, 1965, to Harold D.
and Vennetta J. Maze. He was a graduate of
Goreville High School.
A loving family man does not begin
to describe the passion and devotion that Dallas had for his
wife and family. Dallas met his high school sweetheart, Rhonda
Barringer, while showing cattle at the Union County Fair. Their
love sparked on the fairgrounds and the rest was history.
Dallas and Rhonda were married on September 20, 1986. To
their marriage came four children, Wesley, Jamie, Meagan,
and Madyson. After the devastating still-birth of Wesley, three
little girls came to fill their home with laughter and hugs. They
quickly had their daddy wrapped around their little fingers.
From the time they were young, Dallas and Rhonda had these
little ladies involved in 4-H and showing cattle. Later, many
family vacations were spent traveling across the U.S. showing,
selling, and buying purebred Salers cattle. For Dallas, one could
never have too many cattle.
Years later, the family continued to grow with the addition
of son-in-laws and grandchildren. Jamie and Patrick Malone are
parents to Elayne; Meagan and Caleb Cato are parents to Lotten
and Laetyn; and Madyson recently married Jacob Ellis. Dallas
could not talk about those grandbabies without smiling–he
would often be found playing on the floor, leading them around
on the ponies, or riding around checking cattle with them. He
was such a proud Papa.
He loved life and brought joy to all who surrounded him;
he was sincere but could find humor in any situation; his
personality drew people to him and put them at ease. Dallas
was a hard worker who loved the land and cattle farming.
Engrained in him was a passion for Salers cattle and sorrel
mules.
Dallas was preceded in death by his son, Wesley Franklin
Maze; father-in-law, Curtis Barringer, and sister-in-law Crystal
Maze.
Roy Lee Schmidt
Roy Lee Schmidt, loving husband and
father of two, passed late in the evening
on September 11, 2022. He was 80 years
old. Roy graduated from Long Beach State
University and was drafted in the 13th
round to play with the Green Bay Packers
coached by the famous Vince Lombardi. He
has a prized football signed by the Coach and all the players in
the first Superbowl. He spent six years in the NFL as an offensive
guard. He played for the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans
Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins and the Minnesota
Vikings. He loved working out and staying in shape.
After football he started a successful business, Roy L.
Schmidt Inc., and contracted work from the Atlanta Gas Light
Company for 33 years, retiring in 2009. In 1991, he put on his
cowboy hat and went into the into the cattle business. He raised
and showed Salers cattle along with his daughter Kathy, his son-
in-law Mark and grandson, Matt. Green Acres Farms was based
out of their home in Snellville, Georgia and included leased
farms and an owned farm in Jackson County, Georgia where the
farm grew from a few head of cattle to over a hundred head of
cattle. He comes from a line of farmers and loved going back
to his roots. Roy served on the American Salers Association
Board of Directory and was also the secretary. He and his family
traveled all over the United States to show cattle that won
Grand Champion honors at the Indiana State Fair, Ohio State
Fair, Kansas City Royal, and the North American International
Livestock Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. We also had a first place,
Grand Champion bull for two years in a row at the National
Salers Show and Sale in Denver, Colorado.
Roy will be remembered as an optimist and a visionary
who always kept a running list of plans and projects that he
would put into future practice. He was larger than life and lived
life large. He left an immeasurable footprint that will never be
filled. God certainly has his hands full now.

Maycle Wilson
Maycle Fern Boyd Wilson was a kind,
thoughtful and loyal daughter, wife,
mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
and friend.
She was born May 2, 1929 at Midwest
WY, her family moved
to Thermopolis shortly
thereafter where she lived the rest of her
life. She passed away on December 18, 2022
in Bozeman, MT, at the age of 93. She was
living at the Spring Creek Inn Memory Care
Community.
She was married to Willard Wilson in
1947, and they were married for 67 years.
Her life centered around him, and she missed
him dearly when he died in 2014. They had
been childhood sweethearts since she was
14.
She and Willard raised two children,
Jim (born in 1949) and June (born in 1950).
Family was her life, and she encouraged and
helped them in their many endeavors in their
childhood and adult lives.
Maycle did the books for the farm, cattle
buying and bull business that she and Willard
owned and kept them balanced to the penny.
She also served as a chauffeur for Willard as
they travelled nationally and globally, and
she wasn’t afraid to get there fast. She drove
to Montana for her 90th birthday, explaining
that she was turning 90, not driving 90.
She and Willard loved to travel travelling
to France, England, Scotland, Switzerland,
Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Turkey,
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico,
some being for the Salers cattle business,
and some for the fun of it.
Maycle was classy and was fastidious
in all areas of her life – her appearance, her
home, her work, her commitment to others,
and to her faith.
She is survived by her son Jim Wilson
(Terry), her daughter June Voldseth (David),
grandchildren Billie Jo Norsworthy (Jason),
Sonia Voldseth (Grant), Vance Voldseth (Kim),
Laura Hunter (Chris), great grandchildren,
Emme Norsworthy, Gavin Voldseth, Tristan
Voldseth, Brooks Voldseth, Skylar McDonald,
Ruby McDonald, Oliver Hunter, Elliot Hunter
and Eva Hunter. She is also survived by her dear friend and
sister in law and her husband, Darleen and Sidney Schmidt, and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Eunice
Boyd, her husband, Willard, and her siblings Berta Jean Purcell,
Doris Fisher and John Boyd.

9. MacDonald Ranches Genetic Partners Salers
Source Network - Its all about connections!
When we began planning for the first Genetic Partners
Salers Influence female sale in 2011, George Hammond
of the Hammond Ranch in Hardin, MT was one of the first
to step forward and consign bred females to the sale. The
Hammond Ranch has been breeding commercial Salers
cattle since the early ‘80’s and they are stong believers in
the value that Salers genetics bring to their operation.
That first Genetic Partners sale, and each one since, was
held at Napoleon Livestock Auction in Napoleon, ND.
Napoleon Livestock is owned by George, Jim & Paul Bitz
and Ray Erbele, who has since retired. Ray Erbele has long
been an advocate of Salers cattle, using them in their own cowherd
and feedlot since the early ‘80’s as well and it was largely his influ-
ence that brought Napoleon Livestock to be selected as the site
for the Genetic Partners sale. That first sale brought commercial
cattlemen using Salers genetics from around the region together
and as owners of the sale barn, it gave the Bitz family a chance
to see Salers genetics at work in this area of south central North
Dakota. As the years passed, the Bitz’s gained an appreciation for
Salers cattle. Along with being co-owners of the sale barn, broth-
ers Jim and Paul Bitz were also busy building one of the largest
feedlots in North Dakota. J&P Feedlot today is a 9000 head state
of the art feedyard that includes two confinement finishing barns.
They finish many of the cattle that come into the lot, something
that is not that common in North Dakota. Having seen the Ham-
mond breeding cattle come to the Genetic Partners sale for nearly
a decade, Jim and Paul purchased the Hammond Ranch steer
calves on the Northern Video Auction in 2021 and brought them to
Napoleon to be finished in their lot. The results were outstanding.
According to Paul Bitz, “We really appreciated the good disposition
of the cattle, which is especially important for finishing them in the
confinement barn. Their conversion was among the best we have
ever fed and their carcass yield of 65.5% may be the highest of any
we have shipped out of this lot” In 2022, they purchased the steers
again, looking forward to more outstanding performance. The
Genetic Partners Salers Source Network and the Genetic Partners
Salers Influence Commercial Female sale are helping to make the
connections that enable our customers to get enhanced value
from their MacDonald Ranch genetics.

10. Southwestern Oklahoma is a region
steeped in cattle industry lore. “Millions of
longhorn cattle passed through here,” says
Mike Mcaskill, the 2022 Salers Commercial
Producer of the Year. Doan’s Crossing, a key
outpost along the Great Western Trail, once
stood across from the Mcaskills’ property on
the Texas side of the Red River. Today, it’s not
longhorns you’ll find grazing the grassland in
Mike’s corner of Jackson County, but a herd
of docile, productive Salers-Angus crossed
cattle.
Mike and his family have been reaping
the benefits of a Salers-influenced herd
for nearly forty years. It all started in 1984,
at a Salers sale in Amarillo. The calving
ease associated with Salers is what initially
attracted Mike to the breed, and he had
gone to this sale seeking a young, low-birth-
weight-producing bull. “There was a bad
blizzard that day, and not a half dozen people
showed up for the sale,” said Mike, who took
advantage of the thin crowd and picked up
an older herd bull in addition to the young
bull he had desired. The young bull was put
on Mike’s replacement heifers, and the older
bull serviced the mature cows.
RED DIRT, BLACK HIDE:
RED DIRT, BLACK HIDE:
For Years of Commercial Salers Success with Mike Mcaskill
For Years of Commercial Salers Success with Mike Mcaskill
Mike was impressed by the vigor of Salers calves— “they’ll be up
and sucking in ten or fifteen minutes,” he says—but there were some
disposition issues early on. Shortly after acquiring the first two Salers bulls,
Mike purchased a potload of registered yearling heifers. “To put it mildly,
they were woofy,” Mike said, adding that the poor attitude of those early
Salers led him to prioritize docility over anything else. Mike continued to
purchase black, polled Salers bulls over the next few years, with varying
degrees of success regarding disposition. Still, he persisted.
The search for docile Salers bulls eventually led Mike to Monte Rowell
of Ninnekah, Oklahoma. Mike says he spent two hours looking at the
thirty-some bulls Monte had available before developing something of an
impromptu docility test. “Monte strung cubes out in a trough and let the
bulls feed. I walked along behind them, and whichever ones let me scratch
them on their tailhead and kept eating, those were the ones I wanted.”
Mike has been buying bulls from Monte ever since. “I’m very satisfied
with the Rowell bulls,” he says, adding that he has recommended them to
several neighbors over the years.
So, how have those Salers-crossed cattle been doing along the Red
River all these years? Exceptionally well, according to Mike. Calving season
for the Mcaskills begins in January and ends in May—Mike has bulls on
his cows from April 1st to October 1st—and those Salers-crossed mother
cows make it easy. “As far as mothering ability, they’re pretty good mamas,”
said Mike. He again emphasized the tremendous vigor of Salers calves. His
herd is roughly ninety-five percent black-hided, and many cows are one-
half to three-quarters Salers, with commercial Angus cows purchased as
replacement heifers.
“It’s a te honor to have Mike Mcaskill

WINTER 2023
10
11. Mike’s cattle graze on 2300 acres of deeded native
pasture and 700-800 acres of riparian grassland, all along
the Red River and its north fork. Mike usually relies on
wheat pasture for grazing yearlings. However, wheat
pasture in western Oklahoma has been severely lacking
over the past few years due to extreme drought; in May
of 2022, Oklahoma State University Extension agronomist
and Jackson County Extension director Gary Strickland told
Milling Journal he expected a nearly fifty percent decline in
winter wheat yields harvested that season (1). Regardless,
Mike and his family have managed to make do.
“We try to wean on about October 1st,” said Mike. His
heifers average about 565 pounds at weaning, and his steers
weigh around 600 pounds. Mike preconditions his calves for
approximately forty-five days, during which time they are
bunk broken and given two rounds of shots. During these
recent drought years, Mike’s heifers and steers have gained
an average of two pounds per day during preconditioning. In
the past, when good wheat pasture was available, Mike saw
some fantastic preconditioning gains. “Both the heifers and
the steers get a weaning ration every other day [when on
good wheat pasture]. The steers gained an average of three
and a quarter pounds a day.”
After the preconditioning period, and depending on
the impact of drought on available wheat pasture, Mike will
graze his calves on dormant wheat for up to three-and-a-
half months before selling. When he has sold in early March,
Mike’s calves will weigh between 850 and 900 pounds.
Regardless of when they are sold, the calves are bunk broken
and feedlot-ready.
Though he “prefers to let somebody else feed them,”
Mike has had success in the past sending cattle to a feedlot.
Several years ago, he sent a load of all-natural steers to a
feedlot in Emporia, Kansas, for the purpose of gathering
carcass data. Despite some possible
drawbacks with an all-natural feed plan, the
steers gained around three-point-six pounds
per day and graded eighty-nine percent
Choice and Prime with a roughly sixty-four
percent carcass yield. “There weren’t any
dark cutters. They were very satisfactory.”
Mike had several answers when asked
what added value the Salers influence can
bring to a commercial herd. The unrivaled
calf vigor and excellent calving ease are the
most significant reasons the Mcaskills have
continued to use Salers genetics for almost
four decades. “We’ve joked that a Salers
calf will shake his head, blow the snot out
of his nose and be up to nurse before you
can get back to the pickup to get a tag,”
said Mike. “I’m not sure you can really tell
people and have them believe the vigor
of these cattle. It is really something they
have to experience.” The improvement in
temperament over the years has also been a huge benefit.
Mike added that the Salers influence has produced cows that
are gentle to the point of being almost annoying. “When you
get out of the pickup, they come up to you wanting to eat
out of your hand.” Mike Mcaskill’s combination of an Angus
heifer and a Salers bull produces good, hardy, and gentle
mother cows who weigh 1100-1150 pounds, a perfect fit for
this operation on the southern Plains.
The Mcaskills have had tremendous success with
Salers through the decades. Ever humble, Mike was quick
to express his gratitude for once again being named the
Salers Commercial Producer of the Year. It is an honor
for the American Salers Association to recognize a great,
knowledgeable cattleman for his contribution to and
advocacy for the breed. Thank you, Mike.

18. WINTER 2023
18
Summary with Implications
A 3-yr study utilized 300 Angus-based,
spring-born heifers to evaluate postweaning
heifer development systems on gain and
reproductive performance. Three groups
of heifers were developed over the winter
development period either grazing winter
range or fed a dry lot diet targeted to 1.5
lb/d of gain in order to achieve 65% of their
mature body weight at breeding. Thirty days
prior
to artificial insemination, heifers grazing
winter range entered the dry lot and were
fed this same diet, one group of dry lot
heifers remained on this diet, and the other
received increased energy in the form of wet
corn gluten feed. Post development body
weight and average daily gain were greater
among dry lot developed heifers. There
were no differences in artificial insemination
or final pregnancy rate. Results indicate
that producers may use a 30-day increase
in energy prior to artificial insemination to
decrease overall development inputs in range
heifers without compromising reproductive
efficiency when compared to dry lot heifers
receiving greater inputs.
Introduction
Heifer development represents one of
the greatest costs for cow/calf producers
other than the actual feed costs. The goal
of this study was to investigate production
systems that allow for lower inputs and cost
without compromising lifelong reproductive
success. A previous study (2017 Nebraska
Beef Cattle Report, pp. 5–7) evaluated body
weights (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and
reproductive efficiency in heifers developed
for approximately 160 days on four different
treatments 1) corn residue & range, 2)
winter range, 3) dry lot low (12% wet corn
gluten feed (DM basis)), and 4) dry lot high
(21% wet corn gluten feed (DM basis)).
Despite dry lot heifers being on higher
energy diets throughout their development
period, no differences were seen in artificial
insemination (AI or final pregnancy rate.
While it is understood that an increase in
plane of nutrition and body condition at
critical timepoints promotes cyclicity, puberty
attainment, and lifelong reproductive
efficiency, the minimum threshold of
inputs to acquire optimal pregnancy rates
Effect of Increasing Energy
30 days Prior to Artificial Insemination in Beef Heifers
and development of productive
cows is less clear. Further- more,
compensatory gain and grazing
behavior also contribute to a
heifer’s ability to achieve puberty
and become pregnant in a timely
manner. Therefore, objectives of this
study were to evaluate the impact of
in- creased energy 30 days prior to
AI on BW, ADG, and pregnancy rates
among heifers developed on range
and in a dry lot.
Procedure
Heifer Development
A 3-yr study utilized Angus crossbred heifers (n= 100/yr) at the West
Central Research and Extension Center in North Platte, NE. Heifers were
blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups. During the winter
development period (average 131 ± 3.5 d/yr) heifers were assigned to either
upland range (RANGE) or fed a similar dry lot diet in two pens with a targeted
gain of 1.5 lb/d in order to achieve 65% of their mature BW (14 lb/hd/d hay,
5 lb/hd/d wet corn gluten feed [WCGF], and 0.75 lb/hd/d supplement). Thirty
days prior to AI, one dry lot group remained on this diet (DLLO) while the other
(DLHI) received an additional 9 lb/hd/d WCGF (14 lb/hd/d hay, 14 lb/hd/d wet
corn gluten feed [WCGF], and 0.75 lb/hd/d supplement). Heifers developed on
RANGE grazed winter range and received the equivalent of 1 lb/hd/d of a 29
% crude protein (CP), dried distillers’ grain-based pellet containing monensin
until 30 days prior to AI where they entered the dry lot and received the DLLO
diet. Average diet composition and nutrient analysis for the 30-day diets prior
to AI are presented in Table 1.
As described in a previous study (2017 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report,
pp. 5–7), all heifers were synchronized with the melengestrol acetate-
prostaglandin F2α (MGA-PG) protocol. Heat detection aids (EstrotectTM,
Rockway Inc., Spring Valley, WI) were applied at the time of PG injection
(Lutalyse, Zoetis, Florham Park, NJ). Heifers exhibiting standing estrus were AI
12 hours later. Heifers were placed with bulls 10 days following AI on native
upland range at a 1:50 bull to heifer ratio for a 60- day breeding period. Those
heifers that did not express estrus within 6 days following the first PG injection
were recorded and given a second PG injection, and then immediately placed
with bulls. Pregnancy diagnosis was conducted via transrectal ultrasonography
(ReproScan, Beaverton, OR) 45 days following AI. Forty-five days after the bulls
were removed a second pregnancy diagnosis determined final pregnancy rate.
Statistical Analysis
All analyses were conducted using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS 9.4
(SAS Inst. Inc., Cary NC). The model statement used contained the effects of
treatment group and year. Treatment group within year was considered the
experimental unit, with Year and Treatment treated as categorical variables.
Response variables include BW recorded throughout the study, ADG during
each phase of the study, pregnancy rate to AI, and final pregnancy rate.
Response variables related to weight were assumed to follow a normal
distribution, while response variables related to pregnancy were treated as
binomial. A P-value ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. A P-value ≤ 0.10 was
considered a tendency.

Results
Heifer ADG in DLLO and DLHI were
greater (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03 respective-
ly) than RANGE during the development
period, but there were no differences
observed in ADG during the 30-day
treatment period between DLHI, DLLO,
and RANGE (Table 2). Pre-breeding
BW was greater (P < 0.01) for DLHI and
DLLO compared to RANGE; however,
breeding ADG (the time period between
pre-breeding and first pregnancy diag-
nosis) was greater (P < 0.01) for RANGE
compared to DLHI and DLLO. This may
be attributed to compensatory gain and
grazing behavior differences in the heifers
developed on range. There were no differ-
ences in pregnancy rates to AI between
DLHI (69%), DLLO (63%), or RANGE
(49%). There were also no differences
between final pregnancy rates between
DLHI (96%) and DLLO (95%) or RANGE
(85%). No differences were observed in
calving rate or heifers calving in the first
21days.
Conclusion
Ultimately, greater dietary protein and
energy for DLHI and DLLO heifers led to
greater BW, ADG, but overall short-term
nutritional change had no detectable im-
pact on AI conception nor final pregnancy
rates across heifer development systems.
A greater number of heifers may lead to
statistical differences in AI conception,
but no differences can be concluded in the
current study. When evaluating the best
plan for developing heifers, this data may
encourage producers to evaluate current
development systems and develop heifers
on range or decrease the time spent in a dry
lot compared to supplying greater inputs
throughout the development period. Rather
than advocating one of the three systems
illustrated over another, the current study
illustrates that instead of developing heifers
on a high energy diet throughout the winter
development period, inputs and cost may
be lowered by increasing dietary protein
and energy to beef heifers 30 days prior
14 · 2023 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report
Results
Heifer ADG in DLLO and DLHI were
greater (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03 respectively)
than RANGE during the development
period, but there were no differences
observed in ADG during the 30-day
treatment period between DLHI, DLLO,
and RANGE (Table 2). Pre-breeding BW
was greater (P < 0.01) for DLHI and DLLO
compared to RANGE; however, breeding
ADG (the time period between pre-
breeding and first pregnancy diagnosis) was
greater (P < 0.01) for RANGE compared to
DLHI and DLLO. This may be attributed to
compensatory gain and grazing behavior
differences in the heifers developed
on range. There were no differences
in pregnancy rates to AI between DLHI
(69%), DLLO (63%), or RANGE (49%).
There were also no differences between
final pregnancy rates between DLHI (96%)
and DLLO (95%) or RANGE (85%). No
differences were observed in calving rate or
heifers calving in the first 21days.
Conclusion
Ultimately, greater dietary protein
and energy for DLHI and DLLO heifers
led to greater BW, ADG, but overall
short-term nutritional change had no
detectable impact on AI conception
nor final pregnancy rates across heifer
development systems. A greater number
of heifers may lead to statistical differences

be concluded in the current study. When
evaluating the best plan for developing

to evaluate current development systems

the development period. Rather than
advocating one of the three systems
illustrated over another, the current study
illustrates that instead of developing
heifers on a high energy diet throughout
the winter development period, inputs and
cost may be lowered by increasing dietary
protein and energy to beef heifers 30 days
prior to AI without compromising long-
term reproductive efficiency. An economic
analysis evaluating the savings associated
with lower inputs compared to lower
pregnancy in heifers developed on range
is needed to make more accurate heifer
development decisions.

26. Cattlemen are looking for cattle with optimum
efficiency to enhance profitability and contribute
to the competitiveness of the beef industry. They
are dependent on cattle that not only perform with
optimum efficiency but also enhance offspring
performance. The American Salers Association is
proud to promote a breed that offers optimum
efficiency and awards Salers breeders for producing
superior cattle.
The ASA Gold Sire and Dam program recognizes
Salers breeders’ top producing cows within a herd
based on number of calves weaned per cow exposed
and weaning weight of calves. Cows and sires can be
recognized from any environment because the list is
based on within herd performance.
To become a Gold Dam, cows must meet a
tough selection criteria.
• Gold Dams must have had a calf before
they are 2.3 years of age and calve within
a 395 day calving interval which allows
the producers to calve heifers earlier
than the main cow herd.
• Dam’s must have a minimum of three
natural (non-ET) calves with an average
weaning ratio greater than 105.
• These are the top quality, most efficient
cows in a herd. Only the top 2% of the
registered cows make the Golden Dam
list.
Gold Sires - Salers bulls can earn the title of Gold Sires by siring five or more Gold
Dams. Gold Dams and Sires can be identified in Salers pedigrees by an (*) behind
each name in the pedigree.
