Cardinal guide lite 2012 season

To understand the passion of Cardinals Baseball, one needs to travel back into history to see why the Cardinals are the beloved team throughout the Midwest and have fans in every corner of the United States. KMOX along with a winning team of great announcers and players created Cardinal Nation. In 1925, KMOX was incorporated by local business as a 5,000 Watt station with local investors such as the Globe Democrat and Brown Shoe. The first tower was at Geyer and Manchester, in a Kirkwood farm field. The call letters K – Kirkwood, MO – Missouri and X for Christmas. The investors actually applied for the call letters KVOS for “Voice of St. Louis” but were turned downed. Also, KMO was unavailable, which was their second choice. During 1927 the station began broadcasting baseball games. Companies were asked to set up loud speakers to allow folks everywhere to enjoy the games. KMOX also picked up the very first program content from Columbia Broadcasting which was founded in 1927. Columbia Broadcasting envisioned the power of a transmitter on the western bank of the Mississippi and invested in the station. This allowed the station to power up to a 50,000 clear signal dominated the airwaves over the Midwestern states. In 1933 Columbia took over complete control. For the years during the 30’s and mid 40’s KMOX was one of many stations broadcasting both the Browns and Cardinals games. Harry Caray and Jack Buck were introduced to the nation as the Cardinals broadcasters. Having two of the greatest baseball announcers in history was a major contribution to creating Cardinal Nation. The only bump in the road came in 1948 when the Cardinals started their own network and for two years KMOX was dropped. Then in 1950, the Cardinals reviewed the network stations, and KMOX was asked to become the flagship station for the new network due to its powerful signal. Thus Cardinal Nation was here to stay. During the 50’s and 60’s the Cardinals became very popular throughout the Midwest, South and Western United States before widespread Major League Expansion took place. Cardinal Nation
  2. 3. For states like Indiana, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois and Colorado, (the Rockies franchise started in 1993) the Cardinals were the home team. Even today Cardinals fans fill stands at every major league venue, including taking the honor of selling out Royals stadium in Kansas City, outnumbering Royals fans two to one. Putting a winner on the field was a major reason why the Cardinals were so beloved. With 11 World Series Championships and 18 appearances, fans loved a winner. World Series Years – ’26, ’31, ’34, ’42, ’44, ’46, ’64, ’67, ’82, ’06 and ’11 National League Champions – ’28, ’30, ’43, ’68, ’85, ’87, and ’04 With many of the glory years falling during the depression and World War II, the Cardinals were a very important distraction during some very tough years in our nations history. The stable of historic names in broadcasting and on the field were another major reason why Cardinal Nation took root. The fans were able to listen to Jack Buck, Harry Carey, Joe Garagiola, Dizzy Dean, Mike Shannon, Bob Costas, John Rooney, Dan Dierdorf and Joe Buck who talked about the exploits of Cardinals players and coaches Bob Gibson, Joe Medwick, Lou Brock, Whitey Herzog, Enos Slaughter, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter, Stan Musial, Albert Pujols, Red Schoendienst, Rogers Hornsby, Tony LaRussa, Curt Flood, Mark McGuire, Ken Boyer, Joe Torre, Frankie Frisch, Bill White and Jim Edmonds. There are fans that still remember Enos Slaughter’s mad dash to home from first base on a single that scored the winning run in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series. Fans remember Jack Buck hollering “Go Crazy Folks, Go Crazy” as Ozzie hit the Game 5 walk-off home run in the 1985 NLCS. And who doesn’t relate the term “Holy Cow” with Harry Caray and “That’s A Winner” with Jack Buck. And starting in October 2011 many new generations young and old will grow up after witnessing one of the greatest games in World Series History, Game 6, 2011 with our hometown hero David Freese.   4. 5. Consider this one fact, in a market of 2,079,932 persons 18+, an astounding 73.7% say they follow Cardinals baseball. One of the unusual facts about our hometown team is how female friendly the team is…the split is 50.9% male and 49.1% female. Of these 1,534,362 fans, 75.6% describe themselves as above average in following the team on a regular basis. That’s 1,161,280 regular followers of Cardinals Baseball. Again very female friendly, 53.8% male and 46.2% female. Now that leaves us the “RED TIDE”, those crazies who bought squirrels, and deck themselves out in all red, all the time. There are 678,990 in this group and they know baseball. Around the league they are known as the most knowledgeable fans in the country. Our fans understand the importance of moving a runner from second to third with no one out and applaud the player that makes that happen. Not many fans applaud great plays by the opposition, in St. Louis fans do. St. Louis fans have grown up understanding the game because of the great announcers that have been on KMOX. These fans live, breathe and die with each pitch. And, there are a lot of them. Over 678,990 St. Louis area persons describe themselves as huge Cardinals baseball fans.
