There are many types of camera work involved in this documentary,
as certain ones are needed to help convey an emotion during specific
scenes. Here is a listof the camerawork used:
Pan and establishing shots are paired up to
helpshow the entire area in which the crime
tookplace.
Medium close up's are used toshow the audience
whom is speakingover images or too match who
they see on screen.
Depth of feild is used so the audience knows what to
concentrate on when the voiceoveris describing the
scene during a reconstruction.
The interviewee's were shot either from the left or
the right of the screen, to match the ruleof thirds
and who show their surroundings, since the location
links tothe interviewe and/or the theme of the
documentary.
3. Mise-en-scene
> Interviewee's in own home, and Detective
Ira Williams in his office.
> Reconstructions: Clothing modern at the
time
> Casual clothing
> Police uniform
> Items are shown that link to the
interviewee, eg: A badge was shownwhen
the Detective was about to be interviewed.
> Reconstruction: Bar, Alcohol, shower,
police tape, cut lamp cord, fake blood.
> Actual crime scene images:Spot of real
blood on a white square tile, and victims
handbag on a cream breakfast bar.
> High lighter
> Documents on the case
> White light on interviewee
The mise-en-scene used was chosen specifically to help re-create the
crime scene when the victim (Adele Curtis) was murdered.
4. Sound
> Piano - Fast paced (delicate sounding)
> Female screaming (fades out)
> Dark/ominous music(low)
> Mischevious music- piano starts to play
over it
> Male American voiceover, clear speech.
Voice becomes dramatic when certain
points are being discussed.
Sound was very important in this documentary, as it was
used to control the emotion of the audience, by making
reconstruction scenes tense and interviews sad and to feel
sorry for the family and friends.
5. Archive
> Still images of AdeleCurtis - So the
audience are able to visualise what the
victim looked like.
> Still images of the crime scene- These
are used so the audience realise this is a
real case and its been taken from the
forensic's archive.
> Gary Shellings mugshot
The only archive material used in the
documentary was actual pictures of the victims, a
couple of images from the crime scene and the
murderers mug shot.
6. Graphics
> House/Ornimnants/Garden/ Post box -CGI
> Text is labellingthe CGI, it is in ayellow font,
slightly faded and in a strong/thick font
> The same font is used to address the interviewee.
Name is slightly larger than the subline. Both are in
the same font and are white.
> "dramatization" in top left hand corner when the
reconstruction is playing.
> The channels icon canbe seen on the bottom right
corner, with text above it informing the audience
what program will be on next. Sometime, a 3D royal
blue rectangle will appear from the icon, it will
include thing like this "Like Us On Facebook"
7. Themes
Themes in this documentary
include: Phoenix as it is
where the victim lived and
where the murder took place.
Finding out Adele Curtis'
murderer and why she was
killed? as it was an out of the
blue, no motive murder. And
lastly, crime and
investigation, as it is based
on a true murder and is
broadcast on the ID channel.
8. Type of documentary
The Nightmare next door documentary is a mixed
documentary, because itincludes interviews with
family, friends and Police, observation, archive
material, and narration in the exposition (which is
an American male's voiceover).
9. Narrative
The narrative structure for this documentary was:
closed because it tied up all questions made
during the programme. Non-linear, because it
was constantly speaking back and fourth from
when her murder was conducted and what was
happening during investigation, such as finding
new evidence so many years later. And
multi-thread, because they included a few
possible suspects and thought up of any possible
motives to kill Adele Curtis.
10. Editing
> Cut (most common)
> Flash of white in the reconstructions and when crime
scene shots are shown
> Jumpcuts - reconstructions of the murder and
establishing shots of Phoenix (used to cut away
interview questions)
> Montage of Phoenix
> Certain facts on the documents were blurred
> White blur/grainy cover over reconstructions
