Skills that matter
Since the dawn of humanity, man has utilized ingrained
skills like physical strength, endurance and a mind to
appreciate beauty. The universe has been the inspiration
and a feat to offer opportunities and challenges to us.
Through the passage of time, history has witnessed this
essence to compete and prove oneself powerful over others.
Competitions like these have brought nations into
existence, which in turn became self motivated to give their
best to society. And so we are here, in the age of space
research and technology.
When nations emerged on the map of the world they
deemed it necessary to compete with others for two main
reasons, either to establish their superiority over others or
to compete on fair grounds for development and sustenance
of humanity.
Schools are the volcanic points of development, and so every
competition that begins here is rounded off later in life in
terms of achievements. This issue of Milestones brings to
light the students’ involvement in competitions, whether to
nourish their bodies or to nurture their minds. The school
has witnessed healthy competitive spirit on sports day and
engineered students to participate in knowledge based
competitions like the EMax Star Quiz and Al Diyafah
Quizzards on more than one occasion.
We salute the spirit to compete which spurs one to do their
best. Pristine school will go to unimaginable lengths to
encourage competitions so long as it benefits the students’
quest for self-fulfillment.

2. The Editorial Board met with the headmistress, Mrs. Shahida Salam to acquire her views
about the brand new Pristine Rainbow Nursery which became operational on 3rd
October, 2010.
It was officially inaugurated by the Director of the Child Department at the Ministry of Social
Affairs, Moza Salem Al Shoomi on 24th
January, 2011. PRN was declared to be „the first
ever to function in a building apartment.‟Khaleej Times, January 21,2011.
A VISION REALIZED….
The Pristine Rainbow Nursery offers an education program for children between the age group of
15 months to 4 years. The goals of Pristine Rainbow Nursery cover the main areas of education
without being subject driven and give the child a good headway in the outside world. The areas
of Personal and Social development, Language, Literacy and Communication, Mathematical
concepts, Physical and Creative development, knowledge and understanding of the world set the
foundation of a tiny tot for being equipped in these areas when he or she enters the kindergarten
stage.
A longtime dream to, give a child a head start to embark on a journey of structured learning,
has now become a reality. The motivation for opening PRN was to provide „SPICE‟ to early
childhood education which is the Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional
development of a child. These factors help a child grow, not in separate areas, but as a whole.
The aim of PRN is to provide the children opportunities to learn to play in an environment where
the adults are watchful but not intrusive. The safe environment lends courage to their discoveries
and adventures and they reveal their joys, sufferings and concerns without fear of ridicule or
reproach. The areas of the development incorporate the “Seven Cs” which focus on building the
aspects of Confidence, Coordination, Communication, Concentration, Cooperation, Competence
and Creativity and help in understanding the behavior of a child.
The name of the nursery incorporates the word „rainbow‟ which symbolizes unity and harmony
among children coming together from different nationalities and backgrounds to blend as one in a
conducive learning and working environment.
Thus begins a journey of thousand miles!

4. Kindergarten Sports Day
Mirror, Mirror on the wall; which was the
finest event of them all?
The Kindergarten Sports Day took this honour
without a doubt. The innocence of nursery rhymes
and the fantasy of fairy tales enchanted both
parents and students alike on this occasion. An
encouraging atmosphere on the sports day ensured
that all the students were able to enjoy the success
and sense of participation to the maximum.
The Kindergarten 1 Nursery Rhyme Olympics began
with a colourful march past. The children moved
their shiny pom-poms with great pleasure and
discipline as they assembled for their dance display.
This delightful display made everyone wonder
about the rhythmic skills these children had
mastered over such a short span of time. The relay
races were themed according to popular nursery
rhymes. Everyone was mesmerized by the world of
rhymes as they saw Little Miss Muffet, Jack and Jill,
Two little Dickey Birds and Hickory Dickory Dock
come to life.
The Kindergarten 2 Fairy Land Olympics was a
wonderful spectacle of team spirit, discipline and
gross motor skills. The highlight of the event was the
colourful and beautifully performed drill. Class
leaders held lovely banners displaying the fairy tale
of their themed relay race as all classes marched
smartly and lined up for their drill. The drill was
followed by flat races. The little ones ran as fast as
they could to compete with their peers. The rest of
the children cheered for their classmates showing a
great sense of team spirit.
Then the much awaited themed
relay races began. The skill level for
these races was carefully varied to
meet the age and ability of the
participants. Children loved carrying
the Enormous Turnip, dressing up like
elves, taking food for Granny,
jumping over obstacles and
eventually returning to the starting
point to tag the next team player.
The dwarfs behind Snow White and
the Very Hungry Caterpillar race
presented a brilliant sight too.
Mums and dads also got a chance to
exhibit their energetic mood as they
participated in races. In the end the
children walked away with gifts and
goodie bags that made their day
even more memorable.

5. The Annual Sports Day for Years 1-3
commenced on the 30th
of November
at the school grounds. The entrance
parade of all the participants
signaled the beginning of the
program. Our young athletes proudly
marched to the beats of the drums as
if to say, “We are ready!”
The calisthenics presented by Year 1
set everyone in a jovial mood. The
children gamely swayed and
stretched their arms and legs and
danced gracefully to the delight of
the audience. The Year 2 and 3
students on the other hand, showed
an impressive performance during
their Karate display. Everyone,
including the parents, could not
contain their excitement when the
games started. The children cheered
and hooted for their favourite teams
which fuelled the players’ vigour.
Indeed, it was a day full of fun and
excitement. But more than winning in
the games, the children were taught
the value of participating in sports
and physical activity. Some of them
may have lost in the games, but they
all had something to gain. For in
sports, everyone is a winner!

6. Athletic
Spirit at its
best
The year 2010 Sports Day was an event
that each one of our pupils looked
forward to. As a routine, the ball was
set rolling by practice and selection
rounds in place during regular PE
classes. The list of track and field events
and other sport competitions was
carefully chalked out .Due attention
was paid to the fact that every child
should be able to enter the competition
with endurance through practice and
perform according to one’s ability.
All the four house captains put on their
thinking caps and thus started a
meritorious race for sending forward
their best athlete to compete. The final
day arrived with a fulfilling sense of
healthy competition, yet supporting the
competitors to give their best shot. The
traditional torch run followed by
lighting the torch gave a start to the
events of the day. The house yells
followed the disciplined march past and
expressed a lot of enthusiasm and
determination of each house to make it
for the championship.
The track and field events were punctuated by
karate display, famous for its defensive tactics,
under the watchful and experienced supervision of
Sensai C. V.Usman the Karate Master. As the
events started, the score board started ticking, and
the real competition was fuelled by each team
making their utmost effort to remain on top of the
other. The officiating staff made sure that rules
were followed for all the events.
Finally, the eventful day came to an exciting end
with the most awaited ‘tug of war’, and the
announcement of championship for the house
winning the most number of points. The Liwa
House took this honour with a lot of joyous cheers
by its members as their efforts paid off in the
attainment of the Championship Trophy.

7. ENCOUNTER WITH A
LUMINARY
The Gulf Medical University, Ajman – UAE,
invited Pristine Private School to become part
of their inaugural ceremony of the extension of
their faculty, “The Information and Learning
Centre”. The center was inaugurated on the
25th
of January 2011, by Dr. Abdul Kalam
Azad, the former President of India, a world
renowned personality, a scientist, a teacher
and a multi-faceted human being.
On this august occasion, teachers from the
Science Department accompanied a few
students to the venue for the most exciting
encounter with the dignitary. Our presence
was enriched by the most powerful,
enlightening speech by Dr. Kalam. The focus of
his speech was his working association with
research scientists in the US and UK. His lucid
expression and worthwhile experiences
enthralled the audience.
He also shared his knowledge about some of
the prime medical aspects like, developing
anti-malarial vaccine and creating awareness
of cardiac diseases, etc. on which he has
worked Dr. Kalam informed the gathering
about the innovative steps being taken in
developed nations to tackle these issues, and
the effective ways to implement successful
inventions and research in the fields of
medicine and pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Kalam’s captivating personality complemented his
modesty and joviality in maintaining the décorum of
the moment, enjoyed by everyone present in the
audience. The essence of success was aptly associated in
his words as a result of organization, zest and
perseverance.
The session concluded with a question hour that left a
deep impact on us of Dr. Kalam as a person in
completeness and totality of knowledge, vision and
experience.
I was completely enamoured by this experience and
felt like William Wordsworth the poet, who
remembered the song of the highland lass, long after it
was heard.

8. Where Colours Speak
“A great artist is always before his time or
behind it.”
All true artists, whether they recognize it or not
are created from a place of no-mind, from
internal tranquility. There is certainly an inner
artist within all of us. This feels true because
every particular individual possesses that one
skill, or area of interest, that he or she can
express better than others. If children realize
the significance of art and creativity from the
beginning, they can grow up to be more
confident, more creative, and definitely more
grown-up. Art gives an individual the freedom
of expression, and allows him or her to pursue
those thoughts and actions that bring mental
peace.
By encouraging people, especially children, to
communicate their imagination into something
visual and substantial, we open up new doors of
freedom for them. The senior school students of
Pristine are learning about elements of Art.
These elements can be analyzed in order to gain
a superior understanding of what the artist was
trying to say. The rejoin is not simply “to
become better artists”. Anyone who wants to
create art needs to learn the elements and how
to utilize them in order to better express
themselves through their work. Elements of art
are a group of “factors” that go into creation
and appreciation of a work of art.
As an extension of last year’s learning, art
students have been taught to work on paper
quilling and this year as a continuation they will
learn to craft 3D paper quilling. In our future
projects, Art students of Pristine will learn
about “foil art” creating art work out of the frail
material such as foil decorated frames and foil
Art works on canvas. They will also learn about
crafting Origami Sculptures and explore
different kinds and resources for sculpture
making, abstract paintings and mixed medium
paintings.
ARTIST IN FOCUS -
Henri Matisse
“Cutting into color reminds me of the sculptor’s
direct carving”
Henry Matisse was a French artist in the late
nineteenth and early twentieth century, best known
for his paintings, cut-outs and fluid use of colors
and design. He was a painter, a printmaker and a
sculptor. His mastery of the expressive language of
colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work
spanning over a half-century, won him recognition
as a leading figure in modern art.

9. CREATIVE IMPRESSIONS
Art adds beauty and joy to the world of
young children. It allows for their self-
expression in a creative and stimulating
manner. During the current academic
year, Students of Years 1 and 2 have
been engaged in a range of artistic
activities. Early on, the target was to
develop their motor and coordination
skills where they learnt the proper use
of scissors; cutting in straight and curved
lines and forming spiral shapes. They
were then introduced to a variety of
techniques that involved painting
sceneries, pencil shading, sandpaper art,
collage making and creating crafts using
recycled paper and colour mixing skills.
The work of the famous artist, Henri
Matisse, was used as an inspiration and
students were encouraged to follow his
guidelines in creating pictures with
cutouts. Students also experimented
with foot and handprints to draw and
create different objects. Integration with
other subjects led our young artists to
explore the basic 3D shapes and they
created models of different geometrical
shapes such as cubes or pyramids.
These activities not only foster students’
creativity but help them develop an
early appreciation of art as a platform
for vision and imagination. It is a joy to
observe them take pride in their
creations and present them confidently.

10. EXPLORING ART THROUGH
HISTORY
As part of cross-curricular link students of Years 3, 4
and 5 are taught to take inspiration from history
textbooks. As a result, they experiment with various
art forms that existed during the times of ancient
Greece, Egypt, Rome and the era of the Anglo-
Saxons. A peek into Egyptian history led the
students to work on the many signs and symbols
(hieroglyphics) that artists used in those times to
depict their way of life and culture. The different
aspects of creating craft with paper was incorporated in
this history related adventure, when students presented
twisted crepe paper work to design and decorate Greek
pots, created colour wheels and fashioned paper
sculptures. Roman architectural patterns were
scrutinized by students to copy and modify those
designs into their drawings. Constructing tinkling
wind chimes using the craft of coin work was an area
that children especially enjoyed when relating art to the
Anglo-Saxon period in history. They will also be
involved in helmet foil work as a future project for this
particular time period. Overall, it provided an
opportunity for students to demonstrate a hands-on
approach by visualizing and transporting themselves
back into history.
