2. Management of solid waste of Moghbazar(Dhaka)
Introduction:
Moghbazar under ramna thana situated in dhaka metropolitan city. It is a area of about 7.3563 sq. km (6.2113 sq. km. & 1.145 sq. km. regulated by DNCC &
DSCC respectively) and population estimated about 2,40,000. Moghbazar situated in both DNCC (Dhaka North City Corpporation) & DSCC (Dhaka South

area. So, everyday produced a large number of wastes in this area which is about of 101 ton/ day (estimated). There are so many wastes produces such as
Solid waste.
Liquid waste.
Gaseous waste.
Biodegradable waste.
Chemical waste.
Commercial waste.
Business waste.
Biomedical waste etc.
Now I will discuss about Solid waste & Solid waste management of my residency area (Moghbazar).
3. Continue.
• “Solid waste is generally defined as non soluble materials that is discarded in a solid or semi-solidform”.
• Composition of solid waste :
• There are 3 types of solid waste sources as 1) Household waste or, Municipal waste
2) Industrial waste or, Hazardous waste &
3) Biomedical waste or, Hospital waste.
In Moghbazar area, sources of solid waste are Household waste and Biomedical waste.
Municipal Waste:
Municipal wastes includes construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue, waste from street etc.
Solid waste
Food waste
Cloth
Metal and Glass
Shredded Skin
and Leather
Hospital Waste
Paper
Ploythene
Other Waste
5. Present Situation of Solid Waste Management in Dhaka City :
• Steps of solid waste Management in Municipal (DNCC & DSCC)
• Waste generation..
• Primary waste collection.
• Secondary waste collection.
• Final Disposal sites.
• Primary waste collection Secondary waste collectiong
• Residents/ NGO DNCC/DSCC
• 1. Waste generated from every households, offices, hospitals in everyday e.g, food waste, paper waste, broken glasses and metals, discarded sanitary installation,
plastics etc.
• From Hospitals : several biomedical waste such as blood and several body fluids, refused or used gauze, cottons, disposable syringes and needles, blades, discarded
cannula, discadeded solid organs, infected cloths etc.
• 2. From households and other installations, after generated solid waste people collect the wastes in several pots, buckets, dustbins ; people also use only polythene bag
for collection of waste, it’s called Primary waste collection.
Households Dustbins/
Containers

Disposal sites

7. Present Situation of Solid Waste Management in Dhaka City :
• 3. After collection of waste , 2 things happened: a) People took their waste and throw the collected waste to roadside dustbins/containers or only roadside/ footpath.
b) several NGO/local society authority took responsible for transport the waste from household/hospital to destined
DNCC/DSCC’s waste container /dustbin. For this they(NGO/local society authority) will charge some amount of money of about 100 tk/month to every household.
This process known as Secondary waste collection.
4. After Secondary waste collection, all wastes are finally transported/dumped by Drump trucks to the Final disposal sites or, ‘Dump-site’ ; which is situated in outer
reach part of
Dhaka city. E.g, Aminbazar landfill, Postogola landfill, Matuail landfill etc.
8. Recommanded solid waste management for Moghbazar area:
• There are several steps of Solid waste management :
a) Storage
b) Collection
c) Transport and handling
d) Recycling
e) Disposal and monitoring of waste metarials.
a) Storage : should be done by- Galvanized steel dust bin,
paper sac
public bin.
b) Collection : should be perform – from house to house collection
collection from the public bins.
c) Waste transport and handling : waste transport and handling should be done with trained personnel and well equipped vehicle along with adequate logistic support.
d) Recycling : It means collection of refused products from waste and process it for reuse. e.g, a refused empty ‘beverage can’ use as a ‘flower pot’ or, ‘pen-holder’ after
process it.
e) Disposal of solid waste : several method of Disposal of solid waste , such as – 1)Dumping
2) Controlled tipping or Sanitary Landfill
3) Incineration
9. Continue.
e) Disposal of solid waste : several method of Disposal of solid waste , such as – 1)Dumping

- Trench method
- Ramp method
- Area method.
