flow and pressure must be set with consideration
of the maximum throttle flow to be seen by the
steam turbine. This ensures that the casing inlet
is not subjected to pressure greater than the
maximum allowable. For example, the design
throttle pressure may be set to 1200 psig/83 bar
for a 120 MW unit, so that the throttle pressure
for flows greater than design flow falls within the
1250 psig/86 bar nominal limit for the casing
inlet.
   The nonreheat cycles employ Intermediate
Pressure (IP) and Low Pressure (LP) admissions
to the steam turbine, downstream of the throt-

   Mr. Boss is presently a Product design engineer in Advance Design,
for Steam Turbine Design and Development Engineering. In this posi-
tion he is responsible for the overall design and performance of the
Advanced Steam Turbine designs.
   Mr. Boss previously was Technical Leader of the Automated Steam
Path Layout Program (ASPL), where he established the method for the
computerized steam turbine designs. Prior to that assignment he was
Technical Leader in Thermodynamics and Application Engineering.
   Mr. Boss is a lecturer for the ASME Fundamentals Course and
Advanced Course in Steam Turbine Design, Operation and
Maintenance.

Combined-cycles are influenced by ambient conditions. Since sliding pressure operation with full arc admission is employed, the design point throttle flow and pressure must be set with consideration of the maximum throttle flow to be seen by the steam turbine. This ensures that the casing inlet is not subjected to pressure greater than the maximum allowable. For example, the design throttle pressure may be set to 1200 psig/83 bar for a 120 MW unit, so that the throttle pressure for flows greater than design flow falls within the 1250 psig/86 bar nominal limit for the casing inlet. The nonreheat cycles employ Intermediate Pressure (IP) and Low Pressure (LP) admissions to the steam turbine, downstream of the throt- tle.   • 24. Michael J. Boss Mr. Boss is presently a Product design engineer in Advance Design, for Steam Turbine Design and Development Engineering. In this posi- tion he is responsible for the overall design and performance of the Advanced Steam Turbine designs. Mr. Boss previously was Technical Leader of the Automated Steam Path Layout Program (ASPL), where he established the method for the computerized steam turbine designs. Prior to that assignment he was Technical Leader in Thermodynamics and Application Engineering. Mr. Boss is a lecturer for the ASME Fundamentals Course and Advanced Course in Steam Turbine Design, Operation and Maintenance.
