Improved low load operation
and maximum flexibility
The need for operational flexibility and the challenge of complying with stricter
emissions regulations are top of the agenda of every power plant owner. Alstom’s
ongoing investment in burner technology has resulted in the new Advanced
EnVironmental (AEV) burner for GT13E2 gas turbines.
Building on the proven features of Alstom’s EnVironmental (EV) burner, the AEV burner
employs a new continuous fuel variation concept as the basis for more flexible and
reliable operations. The burner also introduces emissions-compliant low load operation,
which enables operators to react to demand changes rapidly and reduce maintenance
costs by reducing the frequency of plant shutdowns.

The AEV burner is a value-adding upgrade based on latest available technology. The original Alstom EV burners already set a high
performance standard, but the new AEV burner has taken operational flexibility, availability and reliability to the next level.
The AEV uses a continuously variable fuel staging system which completely removes the need for EV-typical switch-over and switch-
back between pilot and premix gas. This permits a wider operational range with acceptably low emissions.
During periods of low demand operators may not need to shut down, but have the ability to operate the gas turbine below 40% of GT
relative load while remaining fully emission compliant. Keeping the unit on-line at low load enables the operator to react instantly
at the first sign of increasing power demand. Furthermore, additional income may be generated from the ability to offer wider and
ancillary services such as spinning reserve.
This flexibility is a major step towards lower running costs, lower maintenance costs, higher availability and improved revenues.
Simplified architecture
With one less fuel gas control valve and a much simpler Fuel Distribution System (FDS), maintenance is reduced. Spare parts
management has also been streamlined. 48 identical burners replace the 72 left- and right-handed burners of the EV burner system.

More effective for emissions control
The AEV burner allows reduced emissions at low load and low ambient temperatures.
Emissions BEHAVIOUR DURING fuel gas operation
The AEV is able to operate with consistently lower NOx
emissions down to below 40% GT relative load.
Low NOx operation at low load is a key benefit for plant operators
who want to benefit from a high spinning reserve and EOH
savings from reduced cyclic operation.
HIGHER PERFORMANCE IN COLD AMBIENT CONDITIONS
When the ambient temperature drops to below 15°C, the EV
burners typically required intake air pre-heating to keep NOx
emissions to a minimum. The new AEV burner allows operation
to lower ambient temperatures without the need for intake
pre-heating.
Emissions BEHAVIOUR DURING fuel oil operation
When operating with fuel oil, the AEV NOx emissions are
compliant with most common market requirements from 50%
relative load upwards. Additionally, there is a low level of visible
emissions, even during transient conditions and at baseload.
REDUCED WATER CONSUMPTION
Another key advantage compared to the EV burner, the AEV
burner needs around 60% less NOx water for emissions
compliant operation.

GT13E2 AEV Burner
Operational experience
The first GT13E2 AEV burner upgrade was carried out in 2006 and is a validated, well
established Alstom product. With years of proven, reliable operation experience, Alstom
is now offering the AEV burner for new sales of GT13E2 gas turbines, as well as for
upgrades of existing units already in operation.
Fast implementation
The full AEV upgrade package can be implemented during a normal C inspection.
Site works during the standard C inspection duration include exchange of combustor
hardware (burners, lances, front segments), exchange of FDS and control logic
modifications.
In addition to the complete AEV burner package and simplified fuel distribution system,
a blower skid is required to provide supplementary bearing sealing air during low
part load operation, when the Variable Inlet Guide Vane (VIGV) is almost closed. The
blower skids and associated piping are included in the scope of supply, and can also be
installed during the standard C inspection duration.
A minimal extension of the standard commissioning scope may be required depending
on site specific conditions.

Improved low load operation and maximum flexibility The need for operational flexibility and the challenge of complying with stricter emissions regulations are top of the agenda of every power plant owner. Alstom’s ongoing investment in burner technology has resulted in the new Advanced EnVironmental (AEV) burner for GT13E2 gas turbines. Building on the proven features of Alstom’s EnVironmental (EV) burner, the AEV burner employs a new continuous fuel variation concept as the basis for more flexible and reliable operations. The burner also introduces emissions-compliant low load operation, which enables operators to react to demand changes rapidly and reduce maintenance costs by reducing the frequency of plant shutdowns. KEY TECHNOLOGY FEATURES • Optimised low load operation with low levels of NOx, CO and visible emissions • Simplified fuel gas operation eliminates switching between pilot and premix gas • Enhanced transient behaviour and start-up reliability • Simplified burner arrangement: 48 AEV burners instead of 72 EV burners • Excellent NOx stability and reduced air pre-heating requirements over a wide range of ambient temperatures • High resistance to changes in fuel gas composition • Low emissions and low water consumption for fuel oil operation • Burner sieve to prevent foreign objects from upstream of the burner entering the turbine Alstom’s AEV burner is a major advance in low emissions, dual fuel burner technology and heralds a new era of operational flexibility for the GT13E2.   • 2. Enhanced flexibility for responsive operations The AEV burner is a value-adding upgrade based on latest available technology. The original Alstom EV burners already set a high performance standard, but the new AEV burner has taken operational flexibility, availability and reliability to the next level. The AEV uses a continuously variable fuel staging system which completely removes the need for EV-typical switch-over and switch- back between pilot and premix gas. This permits a wider operational range with acceptably low emissions. During periods of low demand operators may not need to shut down, but have the ability to operate the gas turbine below 40% of GT relative load while remaining fully emission compliant. Keeping the unit on-line at low load enables the operator to react instantly at the first sign of increasing power demand. Furthermore, additional income may be generated from the ability to offer wider and ancillary services such as spinning reserve. This flexibility is a major step towards lower running costs, lower maintenance costs, higher availability and improved revenues. Simplified architecture With one less fuel gas control valve and a much simpler Fuel Distribution System (FDS), maintenance is reduced. Spare parts management has also been streamlined. 48 identical burners replace the 72 left- and right-handed burners of the EV burner system.   • 3. Gas Service SOLUTIONS GT13E2 AEV Burner More effective for emissions control The AEV burner allows reduced emissions at low load and low ambient temperatures. Emissions BEHAVIOUR DURING fuel gas operation The AEV is able to operate with consistently lower NOx emissions down to below 40% GT relative load. Low NOx operation at low load is a key benefit for plant operators who want to benefit from a high spinning reserve and EOH savings from reduced cyclic operation. HIGHER PERFORMANCE IN COLD AMBIENT CONDITIONS When the ambient temperature drops to below 15°C, the EV burners typically required intake air pre-heating to keep NOx emissions to a minimum. The new AEV burner allows operation to lower ambient temperatures without the need for intake pre-heating. Emissions BEHAVIOUR DURING fuel oil operation When operating with fuel oil, the AEV NOx emissions are compliant with most common market requirements from 50% relative load upwards. Additionally, there is a low level of visible emissions, even during transient conditions and at baseload. REDUCED WATER CONSUMPTION Another key advantage compared to the EV burner, the AEV burner needs around 60% less NOx water for emissions compliant operation. Gas Service SOLUTIONS GT13E2 AEV Burner Operational experience The first GT13E2 AEV burner upgrade was carried out in 2006 and is a validated, well established Alstom product. With years of proven, reliable operation experience, Alstom is now offering the AEV burner for new sales of GT13E2 gas turbines, as well as for upgrades of existing units already in operation. Fast implementation The full AEV upgrade package can be implemented during a normal C inspection. Site works during the standard C inspection duration include exchange of combustor hardware (burners, lances, front segments), exchange of FDS and control logic modifications. In addition to the complete AEV burner package and simplified fuel distribution system, a blower skid is required to provide supplementary bearing sealing air during low part load operation, when the Variable Inlet Guide Vane (VIGV) is almost closed. The blower skids and associated piping are included in the scope of supply, and can also be installed during the standard C inspection duration. A minimal extension of the standard commissioning scope may be required depending on site specific conditions.
