Shots 14
1. Shot 1-Extreme low angle shot. I took this photograph as
a tester for a shot I would like to use in my music video. I
like the alternative viewpoint this uncommonly seen angle
provides, and I feel in a non-still the film would hopefully
catch motion of the trees swaying in the wind. The colours
are also very fresh and light here, I could use this for the
more "positive" sections of the song and contrast it with
others.
Shot 2-This shot was taken within the same wood
but later in the day, this evening light creates a
striped effect as the sun and main light source is
closer to the horizon. This means that shadows are
deepened and lengthened, creating a contrast and
more dramatic atmosphere. I feel this is a good time
to shoot my film as it provides a dramatic effect
that could be useful to demonstrate emotion and
tone within the song. It also emphasises the beauty
of the natural world within this location,
highlighting something that I am keen to represent
throughout.
2. Test Shot 3- This shot combines the beach and
wood location. This provides the mystical and
mysterious atmosphere from the dense forest whilst
sustaining the coastal aspects. Traditionally a forest
is an ideal setting for fantasy or mystery; this could
be a route that I could take if I wished to include
narrative to my music video. Again I have taken this
photograph at low light, in the evening when the
light has a ‘golden’ quality to it that I have captured
here in the glare across the frame. This has also
provided a lightening tint to the photograph that I
could digitally enhance later if it proved to be
effective on film.
Test Shot 4-
This shot shows my other choice for location- the
beach. With this framing I am including small
aspects of the forest and using a technique I first
discovered in the Haim music video. By hiding part
of the frame the viewer gets the impression of
mystery and isolation. This is one of the reasons I
chose this beach and location in particular, the
vast flat expanse provides a very solitary
experience. This creates broad stripes of colour
and a large sky that could be very dramatic and of
good use in my music video.
3. Test shot 5-This shot plays with my idea of light patterns. The
colours within the photograph are very calming and soothing. I
feel this would work well within my music video and add to the
sunlit, coastal theme I have running through my ideas. This
location has proved very appropriate to my music video as it
provides a beach and a wood, combing the two and widening
the variety and amount of shots I can use. I also feel my artists
can react well to this environment, as there is plenty of scope to
include them.
Test shot 6-This is a panorama shot I took of the
location. I decide on a panorama so that I could
document more of a wide angle view and contain the
location in one photograph. The view I have chosen
shows the woods and the beach, including the beach
huts which could provide some interesting shots and
places for my artist to be. The vast expanse of the sand
and the contrast with the sky I believe creates a
dramatic effect and a sense of isolation and loneliness
which could relate directly to the song lyrics which
depict a lost lover. The tall pine trees also cast a
dramatic and mysterious atmosphere which could
represent another sense of being lost. The sea is the
last shot I have not photographed, but I would like to
include.
