This presentation is based on the lighting techniques generally used in Stadiums. The case study has been specifically related to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium situated in New Delhi.
2. For these sports to take place there need to
be dedicated venues which are called
stadiums that should accommodate the
participants and the fans. They can take place
during any time of the day and lighting plays
an important part in making sports success.
Stadium lighting is, therefore, the incorporation
of artificial lighting in the stadiums to help
mimic the natural lighting during the day to
ensure the continuity of the sports.
Due to the advancement of technology, there
has been a massive improvement in the
lighting of the stadiums where it becomes
difficult to distinguish between day and night.

4. NEED FOR PROPER SPORTS LIGHTING IN A STADIUM
Players and Officials
The primary concern should be to give players and officials the
optimum conditions in which to perform. The illuminance system
should not distract or hinder players or officials during the match.
Spectators
The illuminance system should provide spectators with an
environment that is comfortable and free from glare and allows them
to see the match clearly.
Broadcaster
Television broadcasters require the correct illuminance conditions to
enable high-quality pictures to be produced.
5. TYPES OF LIGHTS USED IN STADIUMS
The light used
in Jawaharlal
Nehru Stadium
is LED.

6. BENEFITS FOR SPORTS STADIUM USING LED LIGHTS
LOWERED ENERGY COSTS
Stadium lighting techniques can reduce energy costs by as
much as 63 percent simply by making the switch from HID to
LED products.
REDUCED MAINTENANCE EFFORT AND COST
Benefit of LED lighting is its long potential lifespan.
LED lamps are rated to last over 100,000 hours.
The overall construction of the luminaire, which protects all
sensitive components, and the patented venting system, which
protects from heat damage, lead to this longer lifespan and
reduced maintenance costs.
NO WARM-UP TIME
Unlike HID lighting, which can take as much as 20 minutes to
achieve 90 percent brightness, LED lighting achieves full
brightness the moment it sufficiently on.
7. IMPROVED LIGHTING PERFORMANCE
LED delivers superior lighting throughout the life of the lamp or
luminaire.
This does not create poor color rendering and also decreases visual
fatigue for players and spectators alike.
BETTER COLOUR RENDERING
LED lighting delivers lighting that is very close to natural sunlight.
One can enjoy glare-free lighting with UGH<19 and correct color
rendering with CRI>85. This means that the colors will appear accurate
not only to the audience in the stadium but also to those watching from
home.

8. DIFFERENT POSITIONS OF FLOOD LIGHTS IN STADIUMS
There are different positions of flood lights in a stadium giving different advantages
and disadvantages
1. The four corner layout – poles are arranged in four corners of the field . The
height of the tower is usually 35-60m. The shortcoming is that there is visual
change in different viewing directions.
2. Multi Pole layout - In this layout, both sides of the field is fitted with a length of
lights at a fixed distance. The light poles are lower and more dispersed.
3. Light band layout - Light band layout is arranged on both sides of another form,
that is, the lamps arranged in rows on both sides of the stadium, forming a
continuous light band lighting system.

11. STANDARS FOR STADIUM
LIGHTINGS
Some standard has been defined so
that the stadium lightings can be
matched to a certain level. The
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is designed
to meet the international standards set
by Asian Football Confederation (AFC),
the International Federation of
Association Football (FIFA) and
the International Association of Athletics
Federations (IAAF)
