I am the son of Judith and Lawrence Black and the Grandson of
two educators. I also have two brothers. One of which, Tarik Black,
currently plays for the LA LAKERS.
Growing up, my siblings were more in to sports and athletics than I.
I've always been a big ball of creative energy, though, and because
of that, I chose the path of ENTERTAINMENT early.
Since elementary school I've been involved in a number of
organizations, competitions, and shows. All of my experiences have
been either TV/Film based or music based. I've also gotten a
wealth of experience in Marketing and Communications. I studied
and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), in
Mass Communications.
After graduating I moved to Atlanta where I lived for two years.
While there I had the opportunity to audition for a number of
productions ranging from: fashion shows to even a roll in a
performance based reality TV show pilot.
Today, I am a well rounded and highly qualified young professional,
who's now practicing his craft through being an educator. As this is
my third year in education, and my first year teaching Theater
(High School), I'm seeing where I might have found my niche. I do
have MUCH more to learn however, I have begun developing my
teaching methods. I've also begun to tailor my teaching style.
As this is my professional portfolio, I would like for it to serve as a
representation of the Theater course/program I've begun here at
W.E.B. Dubois.
ABOUT
ME
AMAL BLACK
THEATER TEACHER
MISSION & EDUCATIONAL
PHILOSOPHY
My mission is to use my profession as a platform through which I will not only teach
but mentor young entertainers who plan to pursue a similar creative career path;
whether they become teachers of performance or performers.
My goal as a teacher I find is very undefined because as a teacher I have specific wants
and goals for not only myself but per student (especially the ones with whom I really
bond). However, to be general, my goal is to become a premiere educator from my
community who's known for producing theatrical productions that satisfy the likes of
my community at large. Having such a career, I know will allow me the resource and
esteem I've dreamed of, so that I might be able to extend a world of opportunities in
entertainment and or production to my scholars.
WEB DUBOIS Consortium Arts and Tech
Theater and Performing Arts Curriculum Guide
Theater I &II Course Description
Idealy, thisTheater and Performing Arts program is one that is divided into four major strands: Q1.) Acting/Dance
for Stage, Q2.) Scripting and Digital Storytelling (Storyboarding, Theater II), Q3. Set Design and Costuming (Stage
Craft, Theater II), Q4.) Technical Theater and Production. Each of these four major areas of focus will be broken
down into Units through which we will explore, examine, model, research, and present successful demonstrations of
acquired knowledge and mastery. After being thoroughly exposed to well developed lessons that will guide core
practices, each student will be assessed through a series of formative and summative assessments throughout the
year via: In Class Observation, Homework, Exams, Term Papers, Portfolios, Performances, etc. This course, too, will
be data driven wherefore examples of quality work will be compiled and documented in digital portfolio style
presentation.
DEMOGRAPHIC OF
STUDENTS
THIS YEAR I HAD THE PLEASURE OF TEACHING 70-78
STUDENTS
Each class period was mixed with 9th-11th graders.
Students in this class participated in a number of group projects as a means
of establishing a stronger theatrical team / class bond.
Many of the students started out not knowing what theater is, however by
the end of the year most (if not all) of my students were familiar with
production processes, scripting/plot development, and theater jargon.
After participating in the course a number of our students have expressed
deep interest in pursuing careers in either acting for stage or TV, as well as
music, broadcast, production and design.

The following work samples are
pieces of written material from
various students.
Assignment 1: Script Writing- In this
assignment my students were broken
into groups. They were assigned to
write a small 2 character dialogue. They
were instructed to, in one page
(front/back), write about a controversial
issue affecting teens today. These
students chose teen pregnancy. They
were graded on: content, punctuation,
and formatting.
Assignment 2: Visual and Literary
Analysis- For this assignment as well,
students were grouped. Each group
selected either: a magazine, book,
photograph, or brochure. With this
assignment I wanted them to practice
identifying the main idea of the work, as
well as practice application, and written
response.

MONOLOGUES
SAMPLE 1: Class Notes
accompanied by a short
monologue writing
exercise where students
had to jot vocabulary,
notes, and partake in a
brief monologue writing
exercise.
SAMPLE 2: Monologue
Classwork assignment
where students were
given a prompt about a
distant relative who
comes back after a
number of years. They
were to show us how a
character might explain
themselves in a given
scenario.

“Good School, Bad School” - Project
This year my scholars and I began writing
an original script we titled “Good School,
Bad School”. It is a dynamic script that
addresses a number of issues teens face
today, with High school as the stories
backdrop. In this clip I had just gotten
through typing the first two scenes of the
script. After a rigorous 2 weeks of intense
in class storyboarding and plot
development practices, we began to
construct our plot, characters, and
dialogue. Here you see us experiencing, as
a class, the first reading of our work.
