2. The exception to the rule
If a regular stacks item doesn’t have a barcode it
has to go back to Tech Services and Cataloging
before it can be checked out to a patron;
however, if the item is a bound periodical, a
government document, microfilm or microfiche
we can check it out to a patron using a PER card.
3. This is a PER card, also known as a periodical card.
They are located in a wooden organizer behind the
monitor for the discharge computer. Notice that at
the top of the card it has four options.
PER (periodical)
GD (government document)
FILM (microfilm)
FICHE (microfiche)
Circle the one that matches the item you’re checking
out and then put the date and your initials at the top
of the card.
4. Now you’re going to note the
call number on the item.
Please write it as it is on the
call number label (minus the
per if it’s a periodical).
6. Here you will put the patron’s
name (first then last) and their ID
number. This will be their my WSU
id or their library card number.
Note: Community Borrowers
cannot check out bound
periodicals, but they can check out
government documents.
If an item has been retrieved from
Compact Shelving make sure it has
a Compact stamp on it.
7. Next, take the sticker with the P
barcode on it and put it on the
bottom left hand cover of the
front of the item. You will scan
this barcode to check the item
out to the patron. Check out
times are:
• Periodical (1 week check out)
• Gov Docs (4 week check out)
• Film (1 week check out)
• Fiche (1 week check out)
8. Put completed cards that need to be charged
in the slot that says: To Charge - Sara.
9. To Discharge:
• Give item to GA or Staff member to pull the
card and discharge the item.
• The cards can be found in the same wooden
box behind the first letter of the call
number (excluding per). There are different
sections for film, fiche, periodicals and gov
docs.
• GA’s - Double Check that the card you have
matches that item. If you are unsure at all,
discharge the item, but leave it for Sara to
check. (Microfilm/Fiche is tricky because
there are many rolls and dates with the
same Microfilm #, Make sure the dates
and/or title matches)
• Put a line through the “P” number on the
card to designate it has been discharged
and stamp with return/cancel date. Leave
the item and the PER card on Sara’s desk.
