Summary of Hours:
Clinical Faculty 72
Hospital Educator 42
Research 19
Total Hours: 133
Summary/Analysis:
During my time following my hospital educator, I met my first objective by witnessing
her communicate with other healthcare professionals. When we would go to meetings to discuss
hospital policy, oftentimes, the group participants would ask for my opinion on the subject
matter. Following my nurse educators example, I would address the group in a professional
manner and state my opinion as briefly as possible. My nurse educator and I would often discuss
the reason behind new policy changes at the hospital. I greatly appreciate the manner in which
she would allow me to voice my opinions.
My second objective was met when my educator applied Lewin’s Theory of Change to
multiple situations. She had to implement this theory in order to address the educational needs of
the orthopedic unit on the application of a new dressing. Another case in which she had to
implement this theory, was with the hospital’s new insulin scanning policy. With both instances,
we made educational flyers and then talked with the managers to help the units go through the
unfreezing stage of change. I also was able to go to an Investigation Review Board, where the
participants used the Nurse Shared Governance Model. This model discussed the use of nurse
councils and an executive board to discuss how their decisions on new research studies
influences the hospital’s nursing population.
Objective three was achieved when my educator implemented her Silvadene research
study on the orthopedic floor. Watching her initiate this study, allowed me to have a better
understanding of the steps involved to prepare a research design. I also was able to go to a
variety of meetings that discussed evidence based practice and the hospital’s current procedure
for cleaning a central catheter. This showed me the importance of researching the evidence
behind certain procedures. I also met this objective during my time following faculty instructors
during clinical. These instructors emphasized to the students the importance of knowing the
research behind nurse practice.
Objective four was met in a variety of ways. During my time with my educator, I learned
the reason behind certain hospital procedures. While following faculty educators, I witnessed a
variety of communication methods with students. Following different educators allowed me to
increase my own knowledge base. Each educator had a different style of communicating, and a
3
different subject that they would stress to the students. Incorporating the different
communication styles will allow me to be a better instructor and nurse educator.
Objective five was met while following both my educator and the faculty instructors. My
SHHS educator allowed me to see the importance of being respected when one has to
communicate with a variety of people in the workplace. During clinical, it was interesting to see
the faculty instructors make decisions based off from prior experiences and evidence based
practice. During my practicum experience, I was able to meet all five of my objectives.
