3. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson you will be able to:
• Define the term Transport
• Identify the importance of transport
• Justify the main factors that influence the form of transport used
4. TRANSPORT
• Taking or carrying people or goods from one place to another by means of a
vehicle, aircraft or ship.
7. COMMUTERS
In Trinidad, several persons live in rural communities and often times their place of
work is in urban areas. They commute by bus, water-taxis and taxis.
Similarly school children use the services provided by the government with a ‘free
bus’.
8. FINISHED PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTED.
• Transport helps in the assembly of raw materials and distribution of finished goods.
It makes it possible to move goods from the place of production to the place where
they are to be consumed.
9. ONE BIG WORLD MARKET
• Development of efficient means of transport has knit together all the nations of the
world into one big world market. Even the perishable articles like fish, dairy products
and meat are being transported to distant places of the world.
10. SEVERAL IMPORTED GOODS
AVAILABLE:
• Improved means of transport benefit the consumers in many ways. The consumers
can enjoy the benefit of use of many goods, which cannot be produced at their
place, by transporting such goods from other distant places.
11. EVALUATION
• Answer True or False to the following questions:
• Transportation makes it possible to move goods from the place of production to the
place where they are to be consumed.
• Perishable articles like fish, dairy products, and meat cannot transport to distant
places of the world.
• The working population uses various forms of transport such as taxis, ferries and
buses to get to work.
13. FRAGILE ITEMS
• The nature of the goods – fragile or perishable goods
• Fragile items need to be handled as little as possible, so a single air flight might be
preferable to multiple trips by land and sea.
14. URGENT
• How urgently delivery is required? If deliveries are not urgent, it might be possible
to send goods by sea. If urgent, air transport is a quick method of transportation.
15. SIZE AND WEIGHT
• The size and weight of the load. Depending on what the items are, example, if it is
bulky and heavy, air transportation may not be best suited. Marine transportation is
highly effective for carrying heavy loads.
16. STOLEN GOODS
• Is it possible to minimize the risk of goods being stolen? Sending the goods by a
single carrier will be less risky than breaking the journey into several stages
involving a number of carriers.
17. VALUABLE
• How valuable are the items being transported? Where items are of high value, more
expensive forms of transport such as air are more relevant.
18. EVALUATION
• ________________ transport is the cheapest mode of transport. It is suitable to carry
only heavy and bulky goods over long distances where time is not an important
factor.
• ________________transport is the most costly means of transport but is
particularly suited for carrying perishable, light and valuable goods which require
quick delivery.
• _________________transport is convenient when making deliveries to rural locations
that may not have terminals for other forms of transport.
