Keynote Speaker for the 2016 Meeting:
Dr. Carol Meyers
The Mary Grace Wilson Professor Emerita
of Religious Studies at Duke University
The "Gender Gap": Textual and
Archaeological Images of Israelite Women
CAROL MEYERS, the Mary Grace Wilson Professor Emerita of
Religious Studies at Duke University, has lectured and published
widely in biblical studies and archaeology. Her reference work,
Women in Scripture, is a comprehensive look at all biblical women;
and her latest book, Rediscovering Eve (2013), is a landmark study
of women in ancient Israel. She has been a frequent consultant for
media productions, has served as president of SBL, and is currently a
trustee of ASOR, the Albright Institute, and the Dead Sea Scrolls
Foundation.
Message from the Regional Coordinator
Dear Colleagues,
Let me thank the various section leaders, who are responsible for putting
together our sessions: Mark Given for New Testament, David Chapman for
ASOR, Roger Cotton, Hebrew Bible, Laurel Koepf-Taylor for Gender Studies
and, this year, Brad Chance for Religious Studies, jointly, Kristin Swanson and
Brendon Benz for Pedagogy, Victor Matthews the regional scholar program.
Some of the preparations were new assignments and joint assignments for our
section leadership.
Second, I thank those who have chosen to present the fruits of their scholarship,
those who gather for this meeting. Included in my thanks is an expression of
gratitude to Dr. Carol Meyers, our plenary speaker. Our special thanks go to
David Chapman for facilitating Dr. Meyers' participation, this year.
Third, I offer a special thanks to the publishers who contributed in various ways
to our book display. Abingdon, Baker, and Concordia, whom we welcome
back for a second year, InterVarsity Press, Paulist Press, SBL,
Hendrickson, and Zondervan, of course. If I've left any out, it is because the
arrangements were made after this printing.
The staff of the Marriott Hotel has been helpful, as usual, in preparing for our
meeting. They have had transitions this year, so we have gotten to work with
new people. However, they have shown the highest professionalism in assisting
us to have a successful meeting.
Finally, SBL continues to work well with the regional coordinators, most
especially in assisting us to keep regional webpages updated and keeping track
of our budget. This year they helped us again by overseeing on-line registration.
My thanks to Charlie Haws and Samantha Spitzner for their patient assistance in
making this a successful regional gathering.
Respectfully,
Milton Horne, Regional Coordinator

  • 2. SBL Central States Program: 2 Keynote Speaker for the 2016 Meeting: Dr. Carol Meyers The Mary Grace Wilson Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at Duke University The "Gender Gap": Textual and Archaeological Images of Israelite Women CAROL MEYERS, the Mary Grace Wilson Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at Duke University, has lectured and published widely in biblical studies and archaeology. Her reference work, Women in Scripture, is a comprehensive look at all biblical women; and her latest book, Rediscovering Eve (2013), is a landmark study of women in ancient Israel. She has been a frequent consultant for media productions, has served as president of SBL, and is currently a trustee of ASOR, the Albright Institute, and the Dead Sea Scrolls Foundation. Message from the Regional Coordinator Dear Colleagues, Let me thank the various section leaders, who are responsible for putting together our sessions: Mark Given for New Testament, David Chapman for ASOR, Roger Cotton, Hebrew Bible, Laurel Koepf-Taylor for Gender Studies and, this year, Brad Chance for Religious Studies, jointly, Kristin Swanson and Brendon Benz for Pedagogy, Victor Matthews the regional scholar program. Some of the preparations were new assignments and joint assignments for our section leadership. Second, I thank those who have chosen to present the fruits of their scholarship, those who gather for this meeting. Included in my thanks is an expression of gratitude to Dr. Carol Meyers, our plenary speaker. Our special thanks go to David Chapman for facilitating Dr. Meyers' participation, this year. Third, I offer a special thanks to the publishers who contributed in various ways to our book display. Abingdon, Baker, and Concordia, whom we welcome back for a second year, InterVarsity Press, Paulist Press, SBL, Hendrickson, and Zondervan, of course. If I've left any out, it is because the arrangements were made after this printing. The staff of the Marriott Hotel has been helpful, as usual, in preparing for our meeting. They have had transitions this year, so we have gotten to work with new people. However, they have shown the highest professionalism in assisting us to have a successful meeting. Finally, SBL continues to work well with the regional coordinators, most especially in assisting us to keep regional webpages updated and keeping track of our budget. This year they helped us again by overseeing on-line registration. My thanks to Charlie Haws and Samantha Spitzner for their patient assistance in making this a successful regional gathering. Respectfully, Milton Horne, Regional Coordinator
