Dear NoHo First UMC Family,
Lent will soon be upon us. This year Ash Wednesday is the same day as
Valentine’s Day. It is also the same day that Tim and I celebrate 25
years of marriage. We didn’t anticipate on our wedding day that our
Silver Anniversary would be on a high holy day - and that we wouldn’t
be in each other’s company for it! But this is what we know is true about
our marriage - we have had 25 amazing years together because our
marriage is built on the firm foundation of Christ.
I was outside in our backyard with our puppy this week and noticed the
first little peaks of various bulbs popping up along our fence line. It’s an
image that makes me think of Lent, how we plant ourselves in the dark,
how Jesus faced the darkest of darks, and then how new life sprang
forth. It is also an image that I like to hold on to as I pray for our church
that we will sprout anew. I pray that those who have been around for a
long time will experience their own newness and vitality and freshness
in faith. I pray that our community will grow with new vision and joy.
May we hold on to the hope with have in Jesus Christ.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Chamie
We have both always loved the season of Lent. It’s a time to reflect and
renew. It’s also a time to ask some tough questions and to face some
truths. In the end, though, that hard work always leads to new life.
I invite you to make weekly Sunday worship a Lenten practice. I also
invite you to join us for our Lenten Soup Supper Bible Study series
which will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Lounge on
Wednesdays, February 21 through March 20. Take note of all the other
activities in a separate Lent Newsletter.
February 11 Feeding the Hungry
The disciples first reaction to a crowd of hungry people is a “scarcity reaction,” meaning they don’t think
there is enough to help. Yet Jesus takes 5 loaves and 12 fish and in Jesus’ hands, it is more than enough.
February 14 Ash Wednesday Guard Your Heart Mark 7:1-23 | Psalm 51
Jesus called out hypocrisy when he saw it. Just because a person looked “clean” from the outside didn’t necessarily
mean that they were. Jesus knew it was all about the heart. How might we cleanse and renew our hearts this Lent?
February 18 Soul Tending Mark 8:27-38
Jesus asks a powerful question...What do you benefit if you gain the whole world, but lose your soul?
February 25 What a Beautiful Name Mark 9:38-41
On this 40-day Lenten journey, we remember to center ourselves on the beautiful and powerful name of Jesus.
Mark 6:30-44
February Sermon Series Continues
Traditionally, the 40 days of Lent are a time to deepen our
connection with Jesus. One great way to do this is to immerse
ourselves in one of the Gospels. So we will continue to journey
through the Gospel of Mark during Lent.
You are invited to use the Mark Filament Journal Bibles. If you
don’t yet have a copy, they are still available at church. Take
note that during Lent, we have additional worship services for
Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. All at
7:00 PM in Boyer Chapel.
Sermon Series
February 4 Jesus Still Heals Mark 5:21-43
In short order, Jesus calms a storm, casts a demon from a man, and heals Jairus’ daughter. The stories of
old help to remind us that Jesus still has the power to calm our storms, chase away our demons, and
restore us to life in new and meaningful ways.
Norman Kelsey, Sherri Perry, & Dr. Heemanshu Bhagat
Why We Celebrate
Every February, the U.S. honors the
contributions and sacrifices of African
Americans who have helped shape the
nation. Black History Month celebrates the
rich cultural heritage, triumphs and
adversities that are an indelible part of our
country's history.
February was chosen primarily because the
second week of the month coincides with the
birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and
Frederick Douglass. Lincoln was influential in
the emancipation of slaves, and Douglass, a
former slave, was a prominent leader in the
abolitionist movement, which fought to end
slavery.

A Unique Way to Celebrate Black History by Daniella Lake
At UC Berkeley, I’m a research apprentice for a public history initiative called Black Lives at Cal that is
researching and publicizing the Black history of our campus. I’ve been working with BLAC since its inception
in 2021 and I’ve loved every moment of it.
To capture the Black history of UC Berkeley, steering committee member, Gia White, and I have co-developed
a Black history audio tour of campus. Through our tour, listeners can hear the inspiring stories of Black
trailblazers like Annie Coker, the first Black woman to graduate from UC Berkeley's Law school and went on
to become the first Black female lawyer in California, or hear about prominent Black people who visited
campus and gave speeches, such as Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, and W.E.B. Du Bois.
With this tour, new and prospective Black students can look around campus and see themselves in every
corner. It will be known that for over a hundred years, Black people on our campus have found ways, even
when there were only a handful of them, to thrive, kickstart their careers, and make the change they wanted to
see in the world. The tour will be available on Youtube and Spotify @BlackLivesatCal in late April. We hope
that our work helps combat anti-Blackness on campus, the imposter syndrome felt by students of color, and
overall, inspires everyone who listens to it.
Daniella’s project may now be heard on Youtube & Spotify! We encourage you to take a listen during the
month of February. If you go to the UC Berkeley Campus, you may also take a walking audio tour!
Congratulations to Daniella Lake, who is in her Senior Year at UCB, and really changing the world for the
better already! We are so proud of Daniella and look forward to seeing what is next for this bright light and
precious child of God.
Retreat Recap - and Preview for the Next Come to the Waters Retreat
On the last Saturday of January, Pastor Chamie led a retreat about Prayer and Our Bodies which
included attendees from our church, from the Methodist Church in Thousand Oaks (where Pastor
Chamie was once a pastor), and from Ascension Lutheran. Pastor Jen Witten led a Jesus-centered yoga
session in Boyer Chapel. Retreat participants all said they would love such offerings, like yoga, on a more
regular basis in the church. The Come to the Waters retreats have been very fulfilling events. The next
Come to the Waters mini retreat will be in March and center all around Celtic Christian spirituality.
These retreats are open to our church members for a $20 offering. We also hope these retreats will be an
oasis to other Methodists in our conference. Pastor Chamie serves the Cal-Pac Conference Retreat
Ministries Team. To learn more, visit https://calpacretreat.org/
Thank you to the United Women of Faith for helping to lead in
worship last Sunday. Anne Roche, Wendy Welch, and Kathi
Ellis, did a wonderful job leading worship.
Morenike Lake was awarded a Special Mission Recognition pin
for her work in leadership positions and in mission and
community projects. Congratulations to Morenike.
If you would like to take part in the work of the United Women
of Faith, the group meets once a month, on the second
Thursdays at Noon, in the Lounge.
There is a brief meeting, devotions, and dessert is provided. Just
bring a sack lunch.

Interfaith Dialogue Celebrating 75 Years!
On Sunday, April 14, we will celebrate 75 years of
worshiping in our sanctuary! We want to make the day
very special, both the worship service and the
luncheon that will follow. If you would like to be a part
of the planning committee, we will have a brief
introductory meeting on Sunday, February 11, from 12
noon to 12:30 in the Hand-in-Hand Room.
Our Main Sanctuary was dedicated on Easter Sunday,
April 12, 1949.
Offering Plates Returning
During Covid, when people started returning to in
person worship, some practices didn’t return right
away, such as passing the offering plate. Beginning
in February, we will once again have the offering
plates as a participatory part of worship.
Using offering plates is a grace-filled invitation to
offer a financial gift or a gift of your time and
talent. We will have little cards that you can place
in the offering plate with your name, a check mark
if you give online, and sometimes opportunities to
sign up for something, like a church work day.
You can also put prayer requests on this card or
make a note that you would like the pastor to
email or call you.
On the last Friday of January, Pastor Chamie
was a panelist at Temple Adat Ari El. She,
the rabbi, a Muslim imam, and a Catholic
Bishop attended Shabat service and then had
a dinner with about 60 guests. At the dinner,
they all shared different aspects of their faith.
This was followed by an open time for
attendees to ask questions. Pastor Chamie
would like to host a similar event at our
church. If you are interested in helping her to
organize this, you can email her at
pastorchamie@nohofumc.org.

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: admin@nohofumc.org FEBRUARY 2024 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Black History Month • Souper Bowl Sunday • Ash Wednesday • Tiny Homes NOHO • Undies Sunday Collection GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 The Rev. Dottie Escobedo-Frank Bishop Rev. Melissa MacKinnon District Superintendent Rev. Chamie Delkeskamp Lead Pastor Congregation Ministers Kelsey Packman Director of Music & Worship Leader Roger Eshleman Organist April Anderson Administrator Nylean Rapinac Membership & Financial Secretary Patty Kelsey Director, Congregational Nurture Tonya Peat Director, Digital & Social Media Dear NoHo First UMC Family, Lent will soon be upon us. This year Ash Wednesday is the same day as Valentine’s Day. It is also the same day that Tim and I celebrate 25 years of marriage. We didn’t anticipate on our wedding day that our Silver Anniversary would be on a high holy day - and that we wouldn’t be in each other’s company for it! But this is what we know is true about our marriage - we have had 25 amazing years together because our marriage is built on the firm foundation of Christ. I was outside in our backyard with our puppy this week and noticed the first little peaks of various bulbs popping up along our fence line. It’s an image that makes me think of Lent, how we plant ourselves in the dark, how Jesus faced the darkest of darks, and then how new life sprang forth. It is also an image that I like to hold on to as I pray for our church that we will sprout anew. I pray that those who have been around for a long time will experience their own newness and vitality and freshness in faith. I pray that our community will grow with new vision and joy. May we hold on to the hope with have in Jesus Christ. Grace & Peace, Pastor Chamie We have both always loved the season of Lent. It’s a time to reflect and renew. It’s also a time to ask some tough questions and to face some truths. In the end, though, that hard work always leads to new life. I invite you to make weekly Sunday worship a Lenten practice. I also invite you to join us for our Lenten Soup Supper Bible Study series which will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Lounge on Wednesdays, February 21 through March 20. Take note of all the other activities in a separate Lent Newsletter.
  • 2. February 11 Feeding the Hungry The disciples first reaction to a crowd of hungry people is a “scarcity reaction,” meaning they don’t think there is enough to help. Yet Jesus takes 5 loaves and 12 fish and in Jesus’ hands, it is more than enough. February 14 Ash Wednesday Guard Your Heart Mark 7:1-23 | Psalm 51 Jesus called out hypocrisy when he saw it. Just because a person looked “clean” from the outside didn’t necessarily mean that they were. Jesus knew it was all about the heart. How might we cleanse and renew our hearts this Lent? February 18 Soul Tending Mark 8:27-38 Jesus asks a powerful question...What do you benefit if you gain the whole world, but lose your soul? February 25 What a Beautiful Name Mark 9:38-41 On this 40-day Lenten journey, we remember to center ourselves on the beautiful and powerful name of Jesus. Mark 6:30-44 February Sermon Series Continues Traditionally, the 40 days of Lent are a time to deepen our connection with Jesus. One great way to do this is to immerse ourselves in one of the Gospels. So we will continue to journey through the Gospel of Mark during Lent. You are invited to use the Mark Filament Journal Bibles. If you don’t yet have a copy, they are still available at church. Take note that during Lent, we have additional worship services for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. All at 7:00 PM in Boyer Chapel. Sermon Series February 4 Jesus Still Heals Mark 5:21-43 In short order, Jesus calms a storm, casts a demon from a man, and heals Jairus’ daughter. The stories of old help to remind us that Jesus still has the power to calm our storms, chase away our demons, and restore us to life in new and meaningful ways. Norman Kelsey, Sherri Perry, & Dr. Heemanshu Bhagat
  • 3. Why We Celebrate Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history. February was chosen primarily because the second week of the month coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Lincoln was influential in the emancipation of slaves, and Douglass, a former slave, was a prominent leader in the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery.

  • 6. A Unique Way to Celebrate Black History by Daniella Lake At UC Berkeley, I’m a research apprentice for a public history initiative called Black Lives at Cal that is researching and publicizing the Black history of our campus. I’ve been working with BLAC since its inception in 2021 and I’ve loved every moment of it. To capture the Black history of UC Berkeley, steering committee member, Gia White, and I have co-developed a Black history audio tour of campus. Through our tour, listeners can hear the inspiring stories of Black trailblazers like Annie Coker, the first Black woman to graduate from UC Berkeley's Law school and went on to become the first Black female lawyer in California, or hear about prominent Black people who visited campus and gave speeches, such as Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, and W.E.B. Du Bois. With this tour, new and prospective Black students can look around campus and see themselves in every corner. It will be known that for over a hundred years, Black people on our campus have found ways, even when there were only a handful of them, to thrive, kickstart their careers, and make the change they wanted to see in the world. The tour will be available on Youtube and Spotify @BlackLivesatCal in late April. We hope that our work helps combat anti-Blackness on campus, the imposter syndrome felt by students of color, and overall, inspires everyone who listens to it. Daniella’s project may now be heard on Youtube & Spotify! We encourage you to take a listen during the month of February. If you go to the UC Berkeley Campus, you may also take a walking audio tour! Congratulations to Daniella Lake, who is in her Senior Year at UCB, and really changing the world for the better already! We are so proud of Daniella and look forward to seeing what is next for this bright light and precious child of God.
  • 7. Retreat Recap - and Preview for the Next Come to the Waters Retreat On the last Saturday of January, Pastor Chamie led a retreat about Prayer and Our Bodies which included attendees from our church, from the Methodist Church in Thousand Oaks (where Pastor Chamie was once a pastor), and from Ascension Lutheran. Pastor Jen Witten led a Jesus-centered yoga session in Boyer Chapel. Retreat participants all said they would love such offerings, like yoga, on a more regular basis in the church. The Come to the Waters retreats have been very fulfilling events. The next Come to the Waters mini retreat will be in March and center all around Celtic Christian spirituality. These retreats are open to our church members for a $20 offering. We also hope these retreats will be an oasis to other Methodists in our conference. Pastor Chamie serves the Cal-Pac Conference Retreat Ministries Team. To learn more, visit https://calpacretreat.org/ Thank you to the United Women of Faith for helping to lead in worship last Sunday. Anne Roche, Wendy Welch, and Kathi Ellis, did a wonderful job leading worship. Morenike Lake was awarded a Special Mission Recognition pin for her work in leadership positions and in mission and community projects. Congratulations to Morenike. If you would like to take part in the work of the United Women of Faith, the group meets once a month, on the second Thursdays at Noon, in the Lounge. There is a brief meeting, devotions, and dessert is provided. Just bring a sack lunch. UWF Luncheon Meeting Thursday, February 8th Noon Lounge Bring a sack lunch!
  • 8. Interfaith Dialogue Celebrating 75 Years! On Sunday, April 14, we will celebrate 75 years of worshiping in our sanctuary! We want to make the day very special, both the worship service and the luncheon that will follow. If you would like to be a part of the planning committee, we will have a brief introductory meeting on Sunday, February 11, from 12 noon to 12:30 in the Hand-in-Hand Room. Our Main Sanctuary was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1949. Offering Plates Returning During Covid, when people started returning to in person worship, some practices didn’t return right away, such as passing the offering plate. Beginning in February, we will once again have the offering plates as a participatory part of worship. Using offering plates is a grace-filled invitation to offer a financial gift or a gift of your time and talent. We will have little cards that you can place in the offering plate with your name, a check mark if you give online, and sometimes opportunities to sign up for something, like a church work day. You can also put prayer requests on this card or make a note that you would like the pastor to email or call you. On the last Friday of January, Pastor Chamie was a panelist at Temple Adat Ari El. She, the rabbi, a Muslim imam, and a Catholic Bishop attended Shabat service and then had a dinner with about 60 guests. At the dinner, they all shared different aspects of their faith. This was followed by an open time for attendees to ask questions. Pastor Chamie would like to host a similar event at our church. If you are interested in helping her to organize this, you can email her at pastorchamie@nohofumc.org.
