1. The objective of Team Red Octane is to design, analyze, and build two competitive
Urban Concept vehicles for the 2015 Shell Eco Marathon competition. One will be of
a new sub-category CNG (Compressed-Natural-Gas) energy system and the other of
a GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) energy system. Both vehicles will be built to achieve the goals.

Goals
Objective
The Shell Eco-Marathon is an annual competition sponsored by Shell. Participants build ve-
hicles to achieve the highest fuel efficiency under a set of rules.
The Competition is broken into two categories:
i) Prototype- Focuses on maximum efficiency on a small 3 wheel vehicle.
ii) Urban Concept- Focuses on efficiency but carries the design of urban vehicles.
Teams are to pass inspection in order to compete. During the 3 day competition, teams run

Gantt Chart
The primary vehicle will use CNG fuel. The CNG fuel is a system of natural gas that is compressed
into a tank in which it enters the engine fuel supply line. It can burn parallel to gasoline.
Any traditional engine is capable of burning CNG fuel.
Additional main components are required:
CNG tank
Pressure regulator
Vent and relief valves
High pressure fuel lines
CNG is less volatile than Gasoline.
Environmentally friendly
High efficiency
Cost Analysis
The secondary vehicle will use GTL fuel. The GTL fuel is a system chemically processed out of
natural gas in which enters the engine fuel supply line. It burns just like diesel.
Any traditional diesel engine is capable of burning GTL fuel.
Additional components are not required.
The GTL process produces various products:
GTL Gasoil is a diesel-type fuel that will be used in the ve-
hicle.
GTL Naphtha is used as a chemical feedstock for plastics
manufacture.
GTL Kerosene or GTL Jet Fuel is used as a home heating
fuel.
GTL Normal paraffin's are cost-effective detergents.
GTL Base oils are high-quality lubricants.
GTL fuel burns cleaner than conventional
diesel.
