Embedded components connected to the Internet reside in our
things
Monitor
Control
Decide
Simple to complex efforts to monitor, control, and decide
are given to things. We risk becoming vulnerable.
2. • What if there are unintentional dysfunctions that create systemic failures. We could have grave
results.
• Gas explosions - Thermostat control out of control
• Loss of control of power plants, etc are given as case studies. Chaotic behaviors of devices
• What of intentional premediated disruptions by hostile actors create systemic failures?
• Fail/safe features of systems lost. Hackers takeover safety features of planes, trains, industrial plants.
• Decisions are made in very short periods of time leave us vulnerable.
• For example, this is appearing more and more in medical devices where security is lacking. Could someone
cause the medical device to become dysfunctional? Lives could be lost.
• The same is true of automobiles.
• Our cellphones, Bluetooth, and computer controlled music devices become intrusive electronic listening and
camera devices?
