Matthew 14:22-33
2. Matthew 14:22
22 Immediately He made the
disciples get into the boat and
go before Him to the other
side, while He dismissed the
crowds.
By feeding a large number of people He knew the following
day they would as a mob seek to make Him King. It was
near Passover when there was a full moon for light.
3. Matthew 14:23
23 And after He had dismissed the crowds, He
went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.
When evening came, He was there alone,
He knew He was sending them into a storm.
A picture of our labors and lives.
In our life’s journey adversity will appear
4. Matthew 14:24
24 but the boat by this time was a
long way from the land, beaten by
the waves, for the wind was against
them. (straining at rowing per Mark 6:48)

6. A Theophany describes the rare visible manifestation or the
sighting of the invisible God.
In Mark 7:48 we read Jesus sought to pass them by.
This phrase is used with a visual dramatic encounter by
God with Abraham (Genesis 15), Moses (Exodus 33:18),
and Elijah (I King 19:9).
An epiphany would broaden this definition from a specific visual
to an undeniable intersection of multiple phenomena.
One can only conclude as the visible intercession of God
to a believer during a trying time of life
The Mystery of This Event
7. “For they had not gained any insight from the feeding of the 5000 but their hearts were hardened” per
Mark 7:52. God had fed Israel in the wilderness just as Jesus had. The happily fed crowd and the
disciples were overjoyed with the prospect of a great national deliverer and miracle worker.
What should have impressed them? They had missed they had been in the presence of God Himself.
The disciples now turn to properly worship Him as the Son of God. “32 And when they got into the
boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Why Did Jesus Appear Like This?
8. Matthew 14: 26 “When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified! They said “It
is a ghost (phatom)”. (Phantom in Greek they thought they saw a ghost of possible demonic
origins) “And they cried out in fear ”
“Immediately Jesus spoke to them” saying “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid”
Note the phrase “it is I” appears as {Ego – Eimi} both Greek words for “I am” are uniquely blended
for a proper rendering of “I AM that I AM” or Yahweh.
Three supernatural miracles occur here
Jesus commands power over the law of gravity
Jesus commands to quiet the turbulent weather
Jesus teleports everyone at once to their destination

9. Personal Application
A personal theophany though rare may appear in our life. We are not looking for it.
Most likely it will be an epiphany regarding a personal discovery, struggle, or exhaustion.
It may be
a healing
deliverance from grave danger
provision from out of nowhere
a unique set of circumstances where random chance can not be at work.
An epiphany is an experience of a sudden and striking realization. We walk above the
circumstances of adversity. Christ intervenes. You likely have one to report too one day!
