This document describes WIVI (Wireless Identification and Virtual Imaging) technology. WIVI uses WiFi signals to detect and track moving objects like humans behind walls. It was invented at MIT and works by transmitting WiFi signals that reflect off objects and analyzing the reflections to identify movement. WIVI consists of WiFi transmitters and receivers and can determine the number of humans in a room, their locations, and even simple gestures behind walls. However, its resolution is lower than cameras and thicker walls limit its range. Potential applications include security, emergency response, and smart home assistance.

3. HISTORY
WIVI was invented at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory.
DINA KATABI, a professor at MIT’s Department of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science, and her graduate student
FADEL ADIB invented this Technology.

•Use WIFI Signals in ISM
band.
•Typically WIFI Hardware.
Wireless Device.

behind the wall.
3 Antenna MIMO device.
Introduction
5. What can WIVI Do?
● Detect the number of Humans in a Closed room.
● Determine the relative locations of Moving Humans.
● Identify simple gestures from behind a wall.
● Enable communication through a wall, without carrying a
Wireless device.
5
6. Why use WIFI Signals?
WIFI signals can easily penetrate through Walls.
WIVI relies on a simple hardware of 2.5GHz WIFI
radios.
Small enough to be portably used.
Integrated in Hand-held devices.
Low-power WIFI signals are used.

7. WIVI CONSTRUCTION
7
● WIVI like any other system essentially consists of a
transmitter and a receiver.
● Two transmitting antennas.
● Single receiver.

9. BASIC PRINCIPLE
WIVI is based on the principle of RADAR and SONAR imaging
which works on Doppler’s effect.
RADAR is an Object detection system which uses waves to
determine the range, altitude, direction or speed of objects.
Depends on its own transmitting signal.
9
16. RESOLUTION
16
WIVI delivers more basic perspective on moving Objects.
Relatively resolution is low compared to a Traditional Camera.
In WIVI, simple gestures are also traceable.
17. ADVANTAGES
17
● WIVI is relatively a low-power, low-cost, low-bandwidth and
low-size.
● WIVI requires same bandwidth & operates in the same range as
WIFI.
● It allows us to detect Objects in the dark or in the smoke.
● Accurate detection and good accuracy.
18. LIMITATIONS
18
● We cannot detect the humans if the concrete walls are thicker
than 8mts.
● Display has very low resolution.
● To achieve a narrow beam, the human needs to move by about
50cms.

FUTURE SCOPE
WIVI could be built into a Smart Phone or a special handheld device.
Can be used in search-and-rescue missions and Law enforcements.
Evolution of seeing human beings with denser building material with
longer range.

CONCLUSION
WIVI, a smart handheld device which gives an insight vision through
Walls.
Could prove to be very powerful and effective device for Defence
purpose.
Possibly the next Gen RADAR.
