NAME OF SCHEME: FIDELITY PROMOTIONS EMPOWERMENT SCHEME
Poverty is the inability to meet basic need as a result of lack of access to opportunities or income
generating assets. Its increase rate remains alarming despite the high economic growth, a fast
growing society and plenty of natural resources such as crude oil and mineral resources.
There have been several government attempts at poverty alleviation. With the Nigerian
population at about 170 million and over 69% of the country’s population living below the
poverty index according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Nigeria’s troubling unemployment rate has,once again,been brought to the fore, Quoting figures
from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) no fewer than 5.3 million youths are jobless in the
country, while 1.8 million graduates enter the labor market every year. This figure, we believe, is
a conservative estimate of the actual number of unemployed youths in the country, going by
previous statistics released by NBS, which put the number of jobless Nigerians at 20.3 million.
The worsening employment crisis in the country is partly a reflection of government’s inability to
design policies that will create more jobs, or provide enabling environment that could encourage
both individuals and the private sector to expand employment opportunities without let or
hindrance.
It is disheartening that despite repeated claims by the Federal Government that it has been able
to create 1.6 million jobs, there is no demonstrable evidence that that figure has done much to
reduce the rate of unemployment and poverty levelin the country. Instead, the contrary appears
to be the case.
World Bank statistics, last year, put the number of Nigerians living in destitution at 100 million,
while its latest report put Nigeria among the five poorest countries in the world. The high rate of
unemployment and low per capita income in the country are just two of the indices used by the
World Bank in arriving at this assessment. Unemployment especially among youths is a time
bomb for any country. Experience from other nations, including some in Africa, has pointedly
shown that youth unemployment could provoke violent revolutions. The graphic illustration as
shown below tells of the unemployment rate in Nigeria from 2006-2015
Nigeria Labour Last Previous Highest Lowest Unit
Unemployment Rate 8.20 7.50 23.50 5.30 Percent{+}
Population 178.52 173.60 178.52 45.15 Million{+}
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (November, 2015), unemployment rate in Nigeria
grew to 8.20 percent in the second quarter of 2015 from 7.50 percent in the firstquarter of 2015.
It is averaged at 11.59 percent from 2006 until 2015 reaching an all-time high of 23.90 percent in
the fourth quarter of 2011 and a record low of 5.30 percent in the fourth quarter of 2006
